Election Commission Tightens Khon Kaen Governor Race Oversight
Thailand's Election Commission is intensifying oversight of the Khon Kaen provincial governor race, deploying rapid-response teams to monitor the final campaign days and enforce rules on social media activity.
On September 24, Suwang Boonmee, Secretary General of the Election Commission, opened the "Big Day Final Campaign" event at Khon Kaen Provincial Hall to promote voter participation in the provincial governor race. He reported that election preparations, candidate registration, and final campaign activities have proceeded smoothly, with all officials prepared and following established plans. The four candidates have cooperated and kept their campaigns within legal bounds, leaving the decision entirely to voters.
When asked what specific areas the Election Commission would monitor closely, Suwang said the commission has established rapid-response units and oversight networks to keep campaigning within legal limits. He emphasized that the 2-3 days immediately before election day will receive special attention, with mobile teams from the Election Commission and the provincial administration closely monitoring to prevent legal violations.
Regarding social media campaigning, candidates and supporters may participate but must stay within legal boundaries and avoid defamatory posts. The commission noted that even anonymous posts can be traced to candidates. Campaign posts must not be made after 6 p.m. on the day before the election. Suwang expressed confidence that candidates would comply, as violations leave clear evidence.
