Official Denies Corruption Claims in Local Exam Cancellation

A senior Interior Ministry official denied corruption allegations surrounding the cancellation of a 2566 local government exam, saying a fact-finding committee investigation prompted the delay to strengthen anti-corruption measures.

Official Denies Corruption Claims in Local Exam Cancellation
7 Aug Khaosod

On August 7, 2569, Nirat Pongsittitaworn, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry and acting director of the Department of Local Administration (DLA), issued a clarification statement regarding allegations of corruption and interference in the 2566 local government civil service examination. The statement responds to concerns raised by Rangsiman Rom, chair of the parliamentary law and human rights committee, who had publicly questioned the integrity of the exam process and the decision to cancel the contractor selection and examination itself on August 6, 2569.

The DLA explained that the 2566 exam was conducted by the Central Committee for Civil Service and Local Government Officials, with two state universities submitting proposals: Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi and Burapha University. Initially, Rajamangala University won the bid, but after Burapha University filed a legal appeal, the Appeal Committee of the Comptroller General's Office ruled the appeal valid and awarded the contract to Burapha University on December 28, 2566.

However, an anti-corruption network group filed a complaint on January 4, 2567, requesting changes to the exam methodology, review of the university hiring process, and investigation into potential misconduct. In response, the Interior Ministry appointed a fact-finding committee on January 16, 2567. A joint meeting on January 17, 2567, involving multiple agencies including the Anti-Corruption Commission and Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, resulted in an agreement to delay signing the exam contract pending the outcome of the fact-finding investigation. The DLA committed to implementing detailed anti-corruption measures at every stage of the examination process.

A Grade 9 student carried out a shooting at Thepsirintan School in Nonthaburi province, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries before the shooter took his own life. Prior to the school attack, the boy had also fatally shot his grandparents at their residence. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

On August 7, the boy's uncle revealed new details about the family situation. According to information from the boy's father and grandfather, the student was an academically capable child who spoke very little. The uncle stated he rarely conversed with his nephew due to infrequent visits home, but emphasized that the grandparents were not strict disciplinarians and almost never physically punished the boy.

Regarding gaming habits, the uncle said that when he visited, his nephew primarily played Minecraft and he never observed the boy playing shooting games. He also stated he never saw his nephew handle a firearm. The grandfather kept guns locked securely in a personal closet with a tight lock and never allowed the uncle or his brother to handle them. The uncle could not explain how his nephew discovered the location of the gun cabinet key.

Gold Surges as Fed Rate Hike Bets Ease

Gold prices hit their highest level in seven weeks as easing Fed rate hike expectations and progress in U.S.-Iran talks reduce inflation concerns, with analysts projecting further gains to $4,890–$5,250 per troy ounce.

Gold Surges as Fed Rate Hike Bets Ease
7 Aug Khaosod

YLG Bullion International CEO Paworn Nuwattanathrip said gold's climb this week marks its highest level in nearly seven weeks and strongest daily gain since February, driven by progress in U.S.-Iran talks over reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which has dampened oil prices and reduced expectations of Fed rate hikes in September. CME FedWatch Tool data shows investors have cut odds of a September hike to just 54.5%, down from 60–70% previously.

Markets increasingly believe inflation pressure has eased, signaling gold's downtrend may be ending. However, YLG sees risk of one more dip to $4,000–$3,850 if talks collapse, before a rebound upward. The firm projects medium-term consolidation only into Q2 2025, citing sustained central bank buying—the World Gold Council reported global central banks purchased 289 net tonnes in Q2 2024, up 62% year-on-year, while 45% of surveyed central banks plan to increase holdings over the next 12 months.

YLG's target for the next uptrend is $4,890–$5,250 per troy ounce internationally, or 76,500–82,200 baht per baht-weight domestically (at 33.08 baht per dollar). The firm recently launched dollar-denominated gold trading (Gold Spot) in real-time for 99.99% gold (minimum 1 troy ounce or 1 kilogram) and 96.5% gold (minimum 10 baht-weight) to shield investors from currency fluctuation. Protesters Demand Protection of 30-Baht Universal Healthcare Card
7 Aug Khaosod

On August 7, a group of citizens using Thailand's 30-baht universal health insurance card (known as the gold card) protested at the Ministry of Public Health, demanding that the current healthcare scheme remain unchanged. Led by Pattrapol Thandetphonlert, a representative of the public, the group submitted a letter to the health minister opposing any restructuring of the program that could affect citizens' access to services. The letter was received by Dr. Sakda Alaphachan and Dr. Panuwatn Pankaetu, deputy permanent secretaries of the ministry.

Pattrapol stated that the group strongly opposes any modifications to the 30-baht card system, arguing that low-income and grassroots citizens—who represent the majority of Thailand's population—should not bear the consequences of policy changes. He insisted that the current system is working well and requires no overhaul, emphasizing that the Ministry of Public Health has a fundamental duty to ensure all citizens can access healthcare at no personal cost, with the state covering all expenses as a basic right and welfare benefit.

Dr. Sakda responded that there are no plans to cancel the policy, and that current implementation follows existing legal frameworks. He noted that a key mechanism is the law on evaluating the outcomes of legislation, which requires a review every five years. Such reviews examine real-world implementation and identify any limitations or obstacles, with input sought from all sectors before any improvements or modifications are made.

Student Describes Hiding During School Shooting That Killed Seven
7 Aug Khaosod

A student at Debsirin Nonthaburi School has described the terrifying moments he and his classmates hid inside a classroom for nearly 30 minutes during a deadly shooting on Friday that left seven people dead and many others injured.

The Grade 12 student from class M.6/10 told reporters that he was attending an English lesson when he heard several gunshots. At first, he thought the sounds were from someone shooting at birds, so he opened the classroom door to check before returning to his seat.

Shortly afterwards, another student ran in and warned that a teacher had been shot. The class immediately closed the door, locked the classroom and moved to protect themselves.

The student said he looked out of the window and saw the shooter carrying a gun walking down from Building 5 to the ground floor before running toward Building 4, where his classroom was located.

He and his classmates then pushed tables and chairs against the door, turned off the lights, stayed quiet and crouched down while waiting for help. They remained inside for almost half an hour until police arrived and instructed them to leave the area.

"Luckily, no one in our classroom was injured. The shooter only walked past our classroom," he said.

The student said he learned survival techniques from online videos, including how to respond during dangerous situations. He said he did not know the suspect personally but knew he was a younger student at the school.

Although he remains slightly fearful after the incident, he said he would continue attending school and called for stricter measures to check students for weapons.

A People's Party lawmaker was removed from Thailand's parliament on Friday after shouting calls for peace and humanitarian action during Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing's official visit.

The incident took place at parliament as Senate Speaker Mongkol Surasajja was scheduled to welcome Min Aung Hlaing, who was visiting Thailand as a guest of the government.

Before the welcoming ceremony began, Bangkok MP Anusorn Thamjai arrived at the special reception area to observe the event and prepare to submit a letter through the Senate speaker to Myanmar's leader. The letter called for urgent action on cross-border issues and support for the restoration of democracy in Myanmar.

At around 10:50, when Min Aung Hlaing's delegation arrived at the reception area, Anusorn repeatedly shouted, "For peace, for humanity," prompting concern among organisers and security officials.

Parliament police then intervened and escorted Anusorn away from the area.

Min Aung Hlaing's visit to Thailand has drawn criticism from rights groups and Myanmar activists, who have called for greater pressure on the Myanmar military over the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis.

7 Aug Khaosod

After succeeding in entertainment, beauty pageants, and earning a doctorate, Police Major Dr. Atittaya Benjapak, known as "Muay Fighter Cat," is now launching a comprehensive business venture with a new body tone-up product line.

Drawing from her own experience using tone-up cosmetics, Cat developed the formula to suit Thai skin and lifestyle. The launch features two formulas and enlists two industry icons—Jeena Wiraya Pattrochokchai and Benz Prik Thai—as co-presenters.

Jeena Wiraya represents confident fashion-forward women who love styling and bold looks. With a lifestyle constantly in front of cameras for events and shoots, Jeena perfectly embodies the product's promise of boosting confidence and enabling new daily looks.

Singer Benz Prik Thai, though now a mother, maintains impeccable personal care and a radiant, confident appearance, especially under stage lights. She represents modern women's confidence with clarity.

Cat explained: "I put great effort into this product because I wanted all women and LGBTQ+ people to feel confident. Working in entertainment and beauty pageants, I use tone-up daily, but hadn't found a complete solution. So I developed this formula from my own experience.

"I chose Jeena and Benz because they're icons with distinct styles. Jeena represents fashion-loving women who enjoy styling, while Benz is a talented singer who maintains herself and radiates confidence. Both can represent the tone-up product through two different but equally fitting characters."

Police Probe Teen Shooter's Home, Find Grandparents Dead

Police discovered the 14-year-old Thepsirin School shooter had killed his grandparents at their Nonthaburi home before the attack, with investigators examining violent video games and behavioral factors as possible motives.

Police Probe Teen Shooter's Home, Find Grandparents Dead
7 Aug Khaosod

On August 7, Deputy Police Commissioner Watthana Yijeen led officers to inspect the home of a 14-year-old boy responsible for a shooting at Thepsirin School in the Banggrok area of Nonthaburi province, which resulted in injuries to numerous teachers and students and seven confirmed deaths.

Deputy Police Commissioner Watthana revealed that police and forensic officers inspected the residence where the suspect lived with his grandparents in Bangkhurat Subdistrict, Bangbuathong District, Nonthaburi, and found the front door locked from the outside. Officers had to cut the lock to enter and discovered two deceased persons—the suspect's paternal grandparents.

Watthana stated that preliminary investigation suggests the 14-year-old shot his grandparents in the early morning before leaving for school, then locked the front door from outside to prevent discovery before proceeding to carry out the school attack.

According to initial examination of the bodies, the grandfather was shot in the back with the bullet exiting through the front, while preliminary evidence suggests the grandmother was shot while sleeping. Forensic doctors are conducting detailed examinations.

Regarding motives and clues, Watthana noted that neighbors did not hear gunshots initially because the isolated house had few nearby residents. Information from the suspect's uncle, the youngest son of the deceased grandparents, indicated the boy had lived with his grandparents since childhood, enjoyed gaming and spent excessive time on computers, but showed no obvious signs of conflict or stress.

Watthana added that analysts are examining the suspect's computer and have preliminarily found violent video games, while investigators are probing certain behavioral patterns that may have motivated the attack. The school-related issues remain under investigation for additional facts.

Reports indicate the firearm used was a registered gun belonging to the grandfather. Investigators are intensifying efforts to determine the full motivation behind the shooting.
