Mae Rim-Samoeng Highway Pothole Problem Persists for Three Weeks

Pothole-ridden Highway 1096 bypass near Mae Rim has gone three weeks without proper repairs, creating accident risks for daily traffic despite temporary gravel patches that wash away within days of rain.

Residents using the Mae Rim-Samoeng Highway bypass on Highway 1096 are pleading for immediate repairs to the deteriorating road surface, which has been pitted with potholes and rough patches for nearly three weeks. The conditions make travel difficult, especially for cars and small vehicles, and pose a serious accident risk on this downhill stretch where large trucks and container rigs pass regularly; if downhill traffic suddenly slows or backs up in the bypass area, severe crashes could occur.

Temporary gravel repairs have been applied previously, but during the rainy season, the road returns to its damaged state just two to three days after rain falls. Residents are requesting that authorities and contractors deploy grading machines, compactors, and appropriate equipment to properly level and compact the road surface, ensuring safe passage while construction work remains incomplete. They are not asking for a perfect finish, only for conditions that are "smooth enough to drive safely and safe enough to prevent accidents."

The Highway Department and related agencies have a responsibility to maintain routes so the public can travel safely and conveniently. Even as a temporary bypass, when it is open to public use, it becomes a route on which people entrust their lives and safety. The Mae Rim-Samoeng corridor sees regular traffic from residents, tourists, shuttle services, and officials, so authorities should not wait for accidents to occur before taking action.

Residents appeal to responsible agencies to fulfill their duties properly. While road construction may take time, public safety should not be delayed. Residents ask only that the road be leveled, compacted firmly, and maintained in safe condition throughout the construction period—such effort would be greatly appreciated. For the public who use this road daily, it represents their safety and livelihood, even though it may be just one project among many for the agency responsible.
