Heavy Rain Triggers Flooding and Road Damage in Mae Hong Son
Overnight heavy rain dumped 76mm on Mae Hong Son, causing flash flooding that damaged at least 20 homes and eroded a bypass road near the Teacher's Credit Union. Authorities warn more downpours are expected through mid-August.
On September 7, Mae Hong Son Town Police responded to traffic control efforts along the road leading to the Teacher's Credit Union after overnight heavy rain and flash flooding inundated homes in the Pok Khum Nam area near the credit union. Water overflowing from the Mae Hong Son reservoir flooded residential areas in villages including Ban Mai Moo 4 in Pang Moo Subdistrict, affecting at least 20 households.
The intense floodwaters eroded the roadside of the bypass road connecting the town to the credit union, damaging half a lane. Authorities placed traffic cones to prevent vehicles from entering the eroded area due to concerns the concrete surface could collapse further.
A backhoe operated by a contractor working on riverbank erosion barriers was swept into the water by the flash flood, though the operator on the road remained safe.
The Mae Hong Son Meteorological Station reported heavy rainfall of 76.2mm overnight, causing substantial flash flooding throughout the town. The Department of Meteorology warned of additional heavy rainfall expected between August 8 and 13, urging residents to remain vigilant against flash flood hazards.
