Union Demands PM Remove NBTC Chair Over Qualification Breach

The National Telecom Company's labor union demands Prime Minister remove NBTC Chair Dr. Sorin Bunyabaichaipruk after a committee found he violated telecommunications law by holding state employment as a physician at Mahidol University in 20

Union Demands PM Remove NBTC Chair Over Qualification Breach
24 Jul Khaosod

On July 24, 2025, the labor union of the state-owned National Telecom Company (NT) submitted a letter to the Prime Minister requesting that he initiate legal procedures to petition the King for Dr. Sorin Bunyabaichaipruk's removal as chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) immediately due to disqualification.

The letter cited a unanimous 4-0 decision by the NBTC selection committee on July 23, 2025, which determined that Dr. Sorin lacked the required qualifications to serve as a NBTC commissioner. The disqualification stemmed from his continued employment as an hourly-paid physician at Mahidol University between January 8 and April 12, 2022, which violates Section 8(2) of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Act of 2010 and its amendments.

The union stated that the selection committee reviewed documents from Mahidol University and Dr. Sorin's written explanation before concluding that hourly physician positions constitute state employment under institutional assignment and control, thereby violating legal prohibitions.

Although the law required disqualified individuals to sever prohibited ties within a specified timeframe, and despite Dr. Sorin submitting some evidence to the Senate president, he maintained state employee status until April 12, 2022, resulting in his disqualification from the NBTC position.

The union requested that the Prime Minister use legal authority to secure a royal decree removing Dr. Sorin from his NBTC chairmanship retroactively from the date he became ineligible. The union also asked that the matter be referred to the National Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate whether Dr. Sorin's continued service as NBTC chairman after being deemed ineligible constitutes misconduct.

Single Mother of Three Loses Utilities, Stripped of Poverty Card
24 Jul Khaosod

A single mother raising three children alone in an unfinished concrete house has endured four months without electricity and water due to lack of funds to pay bills. She has also been stripped of her poverty assistance card after her phone number was mistakenly linked to a stock trading account.

On July 24, residents of Chao Khram Subdistrict, Prakon Chai District, Buriram Province filed a complaint about a family of four facing severe hardship with utilities cut off for more than four months and loss of poverty card benefits.

Investigation found Ms. Pranee Songchart, 43, living in the unfinished house that belonged to her deceased husband, who died three years ago. She now works daily labor jobs to survive while caring for three children: the eldest in Grade 10, the middle child in Grade 7, and the youngest in kindergarten.

Ms. Pranee explained that she takes odd jobs and supplements income by foraging for bamboo shoots and mushrooms in the forest to trade or sell for rice and school expenses. For the past four months without funds to pay utilities, she uses a single solar-powered light bulb for illumination and bathes her children at the village water tank. Previously she held a poverty card but lost eligibility when her phone number was registered under a stock trading account during the government administration of former Deputy Prime Minister Anutin.

She now struggles to afford even school expenses for her children. When a compassionate teacher occasionally gives her 1,000 baht, she asks her children what they want to eat—when one expressed desire for durian, she bought it and school uniforms until the money ran out. She hopes the government will show compassion for people in desperate situations like hers with no way forward.

24 Jul Khaosod

Pattani police announced on July 24, 2569, the arrest of a major drug trafficking network and the seizure of 506,000 methamphetamine pills concealed in a hidden compartment behind the cab seat of a white Toyota pickup truck bearing Bangkok license plates. The drugs were valued at 30 million baht if successfully smuggled to a neighboring country.

According to deputy provincial police commander Sunthat Chuaphuttaban, the arrest resulted from continuous investigation following an earlier June bust that netted 590,000 pills and 200 kilograms of ice. On July 22, officers received a tip that a man named Hassan was transporting drugs from central Thailand to a Narathiwat-based network. Officers tracked and intercepted the vehicle on July 23 at a checkpoint in Nong Chik district.

Initial inspection revealed nothing illegal, but detailed examination at the provincial police forensics unit discovered the 506,000 pills hidden in the modified compartment. Hassan confessed to smuggling drugs twice previously and earned 200,000 baht per trip. Authorities charged him under drug laws and seized his phone and vehicle while expanding the investigation to other network members.

Content creators Guy Ratchanon and Haru Suprakob posted a five-point clarification on July 24 regarding a viral video showing their children nearly struck by a pickup truck at Rom Hub Market in Samut Sakhon. The couple explained that the incident occurred much longer ago than initially reported, that the clip was part of a pre-recorded travel series released on schedule rather than immediately after the event, and that they were unaware of the driver's death when the video was published. They denied any intention to create drama or shame anyone, noting they would have released the footage immediately if that were their purpose. The couple apologized for the timeline confusion, clarified that their production team alone possessed vehicle registration details, and stressed they never intended the incident to become a major issue. They extended sincere condolences to the driver's family and emphasized they harbored no ill intent toward anyone involved.

Teen Gang Kills Youth Over Shirt, Mother Seeks Justice

A teenager was fatally stabbed by a gang over his shirt on July 24 in Bangkok's Thung Khru district, with his grieving mother demanding justice as police have yet to make arrests.

Teen Gang Kills Youth Over Shirt, Mother Seeks Justice
24 Jul Khaosod

A mother's heart is broken after her son was fatally stabbed by a teenage gang over nothing more than a shirt. On July 24, 2569, the attack occurred with a blade weapon, which the family believes was triggered by the suspects' attempt to steal the victim's shirt. The incident happened along Prachauthit Soi 45 extending to Soi 69 in Thung Khru district before the injured boy died later.

Days have passed since the incident, but no arrests have been made. The story gained traction on social media with the heartbreaking message: "Just one shirt and they stabbed him to death." According to the victim's friend, the boy had left home early in the morning of July 19, 2569 to buy groceries for his mother when a group of teenagers on motorcycles intercepted him, asking "What shirt are you wearing?" and attempting to take it. When he refused, they attacked him. He tried to escape from Prachauthit Soi 45 all the way to Soi 69 before being stabbed with a blade weapon.

Ms. Fa, 46, the victim's mother, revealed that her son left home with a friend to buy food when the gang of teenagers on two motorcycles chased them down, shouted at him, and approached her son. According to the friend's account, the teenagers grabbed the collar of his school-branded shirt and ordered him to remove it, but he refused. He then fled on the motorcycle, but was attacked with a blade weapon along the way, sustaining serious injuries.

Although the boy attempted to return home and was rushed to the hospital by relatives and friends, his injuries were too severe. Doctors had to perform emergency surgery on his kidney and liver, and transfuse large amounts of blood to keep him alive before he was transferred to Taksin Hospital. The mother recounted that doctors and nurses did everything they could, but the internal wounds were too severe. His body lost massive amounts of blood, and multiple organs began to fail. At approximately 02:52 on July 23, 2569, the hospital called to inform her that her son had died.

"My son's life is not something anyone should take away just because they want a shirt. He didn't even know those people. No matter how much I cry today, my son won't come back," the mother said through tears, vowing to pursue the case against the perpetrators to the fullest extent.

She filed a complaint at Ratsadornburana Police Station from the day of the incident, but no suspects have been arrested. Police cited the need for time to investigate, forcing the family to track CCTV footage themselves, making them feel the case is moving too slowly.

The incident has deeply shocked the local community and sparked widespread outrage online. Many have expressed condolences for the loss of the young man with a promising future, and have called on authorities to accelerate their pursuit of the suspects to bring justice to the grieving family and prevent such violence from happening again.

24 Jul Khaosod

Mae Sarieng District officials have mobilized a search operation for a 34-year-old man who went into the Mae Yom River to collect logs and was swept away by the current. His fate remains unknown as rescue efforts continue amid dangerously high and fast-flowing water levels. Police from Mae Sarieng Station received the report at 4:15 p.m. on July 24, 2025, regarding a drowning near the Mae Yom River bridge in Ban Huai Luang village, Ban Kad subdistrict, Mae Sarieng District, Mae Hong Son Province. District Officer Worsak Pantong ordered his deputy, Wikij Chaoduri, to lead volunteer rescue teams to the scene. Upon arrival, they coordinated with community leaders and local residents in attempting to locate the missing man, a local resident who had entered the water to collect wood logs. Search teams were organized to comb high-risk areas and follow the direction of the water current, but recovery efforts have been unsuccessful due to the river remaining at dangerous levels with strong currents stemming from accumulated heavy rainfall upstream. District Officer Worsak Pantong has issued a public safety alert requesting cooperation from residents to refrain from entering the river for swimming, fishing, or collecting floating debris in areas experiencing dangerous flood conditions to prevent further loss of life.

Journalists' Association Aids Woman Stripped of Welfare Eligibility for 9 Years
24 Jul Khaosod

The Chachoengsao Journalists Association, led by President Kaonggiat Putthirangsimaphorn, visited the home of Sakorn Ratana, 60, a housewife caring for her disabled son Sutthianan Khamto, 40, who was paralyzed in a car accident 20 years ago and is now bedridden with severe pressure wounds. Sakorn became the sole breadwinner after her husband's death more than a decade ago, but has been repeatedly stripped of her state welfare card eligibility over nine years because the system shows her name linked to more than three rai of land in central Nakhon Si Thammarat. Despite multiple appeal attempts, she received no relief, prompting her to seek help from journalists to fight for justice.

Following media coverage, the association's leadership, including Vice Presidents Asa Chanphittak and Khanomsak Angsiri, coordinated with the provincial Buddhist abbot and village elder Kritsa Mahaviriyo Thamai to deliver aid. They provided rice, canned goods, instant noodles, drinking water, and cash to ease the family's suffering and give Sakorn strength to continue caring for her son. Sakorn expressed deep gratitude to the association, the temple, and the village elder, vowing to persevere in her son's care while hoping her welfare appeal will finally be approved, allowing her family a better quality of life.

Catering Company Denies Knowledge of ICU Location for Hospital Event

A catering company clarified it delivered pre-cooked Thai dishes for a hospital event but did not know the meal would be served in a pediatric ICU room where an Ang Thong couple's five-day-old son was being treated before his death.

Catering Company Denies Knowledge of ICU Location for Hospital Event
24 Jul Khaosod

A prominent catering company has clarified its involvement in a hospital catering incident, confirming it accepted a job to prepare five fully cooked Thai dishes but insists it was not a formal Chinese banquet service. The case stems from an Ang Thong couple who sought assistance from the Paveena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women after their five-day-old son died. The infant had breathing difficulties and was admitted to the pediatric ICU for treatment.

When visiting their child, the parents discovered hospital staff had organized five tables of food service near their son's bed. The hospital subsequently informed them of the child's death and instructed them to proceed with cremation arrangements.

On July 24, the catering company owner revealed details of the arrangement, explaining that while they did accept the job, it involved pre-cooked Thai food items—fried pork, fried chicken, stir-fried vegetables, clear soup, spicy pork salad, and fruit—delivered in containers for staff to portion out themselves. The company stated this was not a formal banquet but a catering delivery service where young servers simply arranged plates and tables before stepping back. The owner emphasized the arrangement was limited to two or three tables and that they only learned the venue was a pediatric ICU room on the day of service after being told by hospital staff. The company noted that for typical hospital events, they would normally set up in open outdoor spaces, but this time the hospital had already prepared the location. The owner stressed they received job details only on the day of travel, being informed it was a meal delivery event for shared consumption, and they had been handling multiple jobs simultaneously, which prevented them from knowing the exact location in advance.
