She tried to reason with him, but he became enraged, saying "Don't kick me out," before throwing the rock through the window. She fled. He has a history of threatening her with a gun, though she has never actually seen one.

Background checks revealed that Chakrit previously used a firearm to shoot his ex-girlfriend to death in Rayong Province in 2023. He had been imprisoned for that crime and was only recently released in December 2024. The prison issued a one-year behavioral monitoring order set to expire this December. Pornaphaa also disclosed that her son had previously suffered from mental illness and received treatment at Bang Plee Hospital, but stopped taking medication approximately four months ago because his liver enzymes became elevated. It is undeniable that had the attacker not accessed a weapon, the violence might not have occurred or would have been less severe. However, imposing a blanket ban on civilian gun ownership requires careful and comprehensive consideration, as guns serve legitimate purposes for self-defense and property protection alongside their dangers. An unrestricted approach—allowing firearms everywhere and settling disputes as in cowboy films—is clearly not viable, but those needing protection deserve viable options. Historically, countries like the United States permit civilian gun ownership based on colonial-era principles of armed self-defense, with the right to bear arms enshrined in the constitution partly as a safeguard against tyranny. By contrast, 18 countries including North Korea, Mali, Somalia, and Cambodia completely ban civilian firearms, operating on the principle that the state holds a monopoly on violence and should control society according to law. These nations require citizens to fully trust the state to protect them and not abuse power. The question for Thailand is which path to choose and whether it is genuinely feasible. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has proposed banning civilian guns, but statistics from 2020 to June 2025 show that of 161,466 gun-related crimes, 143,274 (84.7 percent) involved illegal or smuggled weapons. If legal guns are controlled, will illegal weapons simply flood in? Will solving one problem create many others? This demands truly careful and comprehensive thought.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul drew heavy criticism after suggesting that homeowners with firearms would face criminal charges for shooting an intruder, prompting him to clarify the next day that his communication had been too brief.

Media commentators note this is not merely a general political communication problem, because imprecise language on legal matters can instantly mislead the broader public. The issue directly affects citizens' understanding of their rights to protect life and property, touching public safety concerns.

A subsequent systematic clarification by the National Police spokesperson proved valuable to society. It explained that a death from shooting an intruder does not automatically make the homeowner guilty, and police investigation or interrogation does not presume guilt.

The critical factor is the circumstances at the time of the incident. Criminal Code Section 68 protects lawful self-defence: if imminent danger threatens and the defence is proportionate, the person is not guilty. However, if the danger has passed but force continues, it may become excessive self-defence, requiring case-by-case assessment.

There is no formula stating "shooting any intruder is always legal" nor one stating "shooting an intruder always makes the homeowner guilty." Determination must examine evidence, surrounding circumstances, sequence of events, and the actual level of danger.

When the state introduces any control measure, policymakers must avoid ambiguous or multi-interpretable language. Public confusion breeds distrust and becomes an obstacle to state measures that deserve social cooperation.

The key lesson concerns state communication. Complex legal matters should be explained systematically by knowledgeable officials directly responsible for enforcement, because even minor inaccuracies, whether intentional or not, can cause widespread public misunderstanding and trigger backlash against well-intentioned state measures.

BANGKOK — Actress and influencer Chatchaya Samrerngrat filed a police complaint against a 35-year-old former police officer on 13 August 2026, accusing him of sexual harassment and trespassing over five years.

Samrerngrat was accompanied by lawyer Sirikwan Nilakorn from the Thammasat Organisation for Good Foundation, assigned by foundation chair Panadda Wongphudee. They met with inquiry officer Wiroj Suchart at Bueng Kum Police Station to pursue legal action against the former officer, identified only as Chatchawal.

Samrerngrat said the alleged harassment began in 2021 at her home in Bangkok's Bueng Kum district. The man initially contacted her through social media claiming to be a fan, but his messages became sexually suggestive and harassing. He later began visiting her home, entering without permission and confronting her family members despite never having met her privately.

The suspect also allegedly followed her to her yoghurt shop and engaged in repeated surveillance. To evade security staff at her housing estate, whom she had provided his photograph, he allegedly disguised himself as a delivery rider, used ride-hailing apps, or claimed he was not visiting her.

Samrerngrat said the incidents have caused her severe distress, triggering panic attacks and preventing her from living normally. She has made three previous police reports, including one on 15 January 2026 for trespassing and another on 11 August after CCTV captured him entering her home at night.

"This time, I want to pursue the case to the fullest extent of the law," Samrerngrat said.

Nilakorn noted that a recently introduced law addressing sexual harassment now covers this type of behaviour, which previously lacked specific legal protection. She said she rushed to assist Samrerngrat in hopes the case would set an example and raise public awareness.

Samrerngrat has appeared in several television dramas including Lai Kinaree, Sat Suea, Pritsana Pom Mai and Duangta Sawan, typically in supporting roles.

Foundation chair Wongphudee said by phone that if the alleged harasser has a mental health condition, his family should seek medical treatment for him rather than allowing him to disturb others.
