At 4:20 p.m. on August 13, Nakhon Phanom Provincial Police Commander Napdol Rak Chat, along with officers from Nong Khai and Thai embassy staff in Vientiane, received custody of 130 Thai men and women from Lao authorities. They had been detained following a major sweep against an online gambling and scam network in Vientiane.

The suspects were transported back to Thailand through the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge checkpoint at Muang Nong Khai district. Multi-disciplinary screening at the Nong Khai Provincial Volunteer Defense Force found no victims of human trafficking, fraud, or wanted persons among them.

Investigations revealed all 130 had traveled to work for six online gambling websites, earning an average of 14,000 to 18,000 baht per month. They rented rooms adjacent to casinos in Vientiane. Some had been working there for less than a month.

On August 18, Lao authorities conducted a heavy crackdown and detained all 130 on charges of working without permission and engaging in online gambling operations in Laos. After Laotian legal proceedings concluded, the suspects were handed over to Thai authorities for prosecution under Thai law.

Anti-Corruption Watchdog Questions High-Cost Gym Equipment at Saraburi Centers

On August 13, Kiartsak Puttapant, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, led media to inspect health promotion centers for elderly residents in Saeng Phan Subdistrict, Wang Muang District, and Muak Lek Subdistrict, Muak Lek District, Saraburi Province. The inspection aimed to monitor high-value project spending and educate officials on proper budget use. Staff reported an average of 40–50 daily users, mostly retired civil servants. Both facilities feature indoor gyms equipped with air conditioning and expensive exercise machines procured by Saraburi Provincial Administration. The project includes 15 such centers across Saraburi built over three fiscal years at a combined cost exceeding 460 million baht: 3 centers in 2563 (91.28 million baht), 9 in 2564 (269.4 million baht), and 3 in 2568 (99.99 million baht). Sports equipment totals 30 items, including seven treadmills—three with reinforced belts and four standard models—each priced at 880,000 baht. Kiartsak expressed satisfaction with equipment quality but voiced concern about maintenance costs and electricity expenses for local government budgets post-handover. The Muak Lek center alone has 104 exercise machines. Paramada Denwong, Deputy Head of Muak Lek Municipality, confirmed that maintenance budgets have been prepared, with requests to the Provincial Administration for equipment replacement if needs exceed capacity.

Toyota Calls for Quick Excise Tax Overhaul to Level Playing Field

Toyota calls for urgent overhaul of excise tax rules to level competition between domestic manufacturers and cheaper Chinese EV importers exploiting tax loopholes in Thailand's automotive market.

Toyota Calls for Quick Excise Tax Overhaul to Level Playing Field
5d ago Khaosod

Toyota has reiterated its position that excise tax restructuring must happen urgently, arguing that higher tax collection benefits the nation and would create fair competition among domestic vehicle manufacturers.

Suphakorn Ratanawara, senior vice president of Toyota Motor Thailand, revealed that following discussions with government officials about the current automotive industry situation, Toyota has proposed restructuring the excise tax framework to ensure equal competition, with national interest as the priority. The company highlighted the competitive disadvantage facing domestically produced vehicles compared to imported Chinese electric vehicles, which pay significantly different excise tax rates, creating an uneven playing field.

To protect the domestic automotive industry, particularly manufacturers who have invested in local production facilities, Toyota argues the government should address tax loopholes being exploited by importers with no clear commitment to domestic investment. This disadvantages genuine investors who have committed to Thailand.

"Over the past 4-5 years, the government has promoted electric vehicles through subsidies worth 100,000 and 50,000 baht, using taxpayer money," Ratanawara said. "Meanwhile, some automakers exploit these gaps to import and sell vehicles without any clear plan to invest in Thailand, putting serious domestic investors at a disadvantage."

Ratanawara emphasized the importance of reconsidering the excise tax collection structure for imported vehicles and imported components assembled domestically to ensure fairness and equality.

He noted the significant scale difference: China sells 20 million vehicles annually while Thailand sells only 600,000—meaning China sells in two weeks what Thailand sells in a year. While Thailand cannot compete on cost, Chinese importers gain further advantages through tax loopholes and government subsidies while paying only 8 percent import duty, whereas domestically produced vehicles face taxes at every stage.

"We are not opposed to consumers having access to affordable vehicles," Ratanawara said. "But the government must carefully consider the details. With 600,000 vehicles sold annually in Thailand, substantial tax revenue is collected for development. However, the current tax structure allows revenue that should be collected to disappear. If this situation continues, the government will eventually lack funds to compensate for these losses. We urge the government to restructure the imported vehicle excise tax system as quickly as possible and collect at the highest appropriate rate."

While Toyota would be affected by restructured import vehicle taxation, the company is prepared to accept it in pursuit of fair competition and a level playing field, prioritizing Thailand's national interest.

State's Muddled Message On Self-Defence Law Stokes Public Confusion

State's Muddled Message On Self-Defence Law Stokes Public Confusion
5d ago Khaosod

The controversy over gun control measures following a school shooting and the killing of a Nonthaburi provincial administrator offers an important lesson in government communication. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul drew heavy criticism after suggesting that homeowners with firearms would face criminal charges for shooting an intruder, prompting him to clarify the next day that his communication had been too brief.

Media commentators note this is not merely a general political communication problem, because imprecise language on legal matters can instantly mislead the broader public. The issue directly affects citizens' understanding of their rights to protect life and property, touching public safety concerns.

A subsequent systematic clarification by the National Police spokesperson proved valuable to society. It explained that a death from shooting an intruder does not automatically make the homeowner guilty, and police investigation or interrogation does not presume guilt.

The critical factor is the circumstances at the time of the incident. Criminal Code Section 68 protects lawful self-defence: if imminent danger threatens and the defence is proportionate, the person is not guilty. However, if the danger has passed but force continues, it may become excessive self-defence, requiring case-by-case assessment.

There is no formula stating "shooting any intruder is always legal" nor one stating "shooting an intruder always makes the homeowner guilty." Determination must examine evidence, surrounding circumstances, sequence of events, and the actual level of danger.

When the state introduces any control measure, policymakers must avoid ambiguous or multi-interpretable language. Public confusion breeds distrust and becomes an obstacle to state measures that deserve social cooperation.

The key lesson concerns state communication. Complex legal matters should be explained systematically by knowledgeable officials directly responsible for enforcement, because even minor inaccuracies, whether intentional or not, can cause widespread public misunderstanding and trigger backlash against well-intentioned state measures.

Actress Files Police Complaint Against Ex-Cop Stalker

BANGKOK — Actress and influencer Chatchaya Samrerngrat filed a police complaint against a 35-year-old former police officer on 13 August 2026, accusing him of sexual harassment and trespassing over five years.

Samrerngrat was accompanied by lawyer Sirikwan Nilakorn from the Thammasat Organisation for Good Foundation, assigned by foundation chair Panadda Wongphudee. They met with inquiry officer Wiroj Suchart at Bueng Kum Police Station to pursue legal action against the former officer, identified only as Chatchawal.

Samrerngrat said the alleged harassment began in 2021 at her home in Bangkok's Bueng Kum district. The man initially contacted her through social media claiming to be a fan, but his messages became sexually suggestive and harassing. He later began visiting her home, entering without permission and confronting her family members despite never having met her privately.

The suspect also allegedly followed her to her yoghurt shop and engaged in repeated surveillance. To evade security staff at her housing estate, whom she had provided his photograph, he allegedly disguised himself as a delivery rider, used ride-hailing apps, or claimed he was not visiting her.

Samrerngrat said the incidents have caused her severe distress, triggering panic attacks and preventing her from living normally. She has made three previous police reports, including one on 15 January 2026 for trespassing and another on 11 August after CCTV captured him entering her home at night.

"This time, I want to pursue the case to the fullest extent of the law," Samrerngrat said.

Nilakorn noted that a recently introduced law addressing sexual harassment now covers this type of behaviour, which previously lacked specific legal protection. She said she rushed to assist Samrerngrat in hopes the case would set an example and raise public awareness.

Samrerngrat has appeared in several television dramas including Lai Kinaree, Sat Suea, Pritsana Pom Mai and Duangta Sawan, typically in supporting roles.

Foundation chair Wongphudee said by phone that if the alleged harasser has a mental health condition, his family should seek medical treatment for him rather than allowing him to disturb others.

Thailand Won't Link Defense Ties to Trade Talks, PM Tells US

Thailand Won't Link Defense Ties to Trade Talks, PM Tells US
5d ago Khaosod

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told a senior US defense official on Thursday that Thailand will not use defense cooperation with the United States as a bargaining chip in trade negotiations, as the two countries seek to strengthen their 193-year alliance. Anutin, who also serves as interior minister, held talks with Elbridge Colby, US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, at Government House in Bangkok on Thursday afternoon during Colby's first official visit to Thailand. Government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said Anutin welcomed Colby and highlighted the positive development of Thai-US relations. The prime minister stressed that security cooperation is a key pillar of the longstanding bilateral relationship, but said Thailand does not have a policy of linking defense cooperation to trade negotiations. "Trade and security discussions proceed on the basis of mutual interests and through the relevant mechanisms for each area," Anutin said, according to the government. Anutin highlighted the 193-year history of Thai-US military ties, saying the alliance has benefited both countries and contributed to peace, security and stability in the region. He called for the two countries to strengthen their alliance in response to a changing international environment and emerging security threats. Colby described Thailand as an important US ally and said Washington places strategic importance on the region and on working with countries that share common principles and goals for maintaining regional peace and security. He reaffirmed the US commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Thailand to address increasingly complex challenges and a rapidly changing security environment. The two sides agreed to deepen security cooperation, including efforts to strengthen their ability to respond to modern security challenges, modernize Thailand's armed forces and expand defense industry cooperation. Anutin also raised cooperation against transnational crime, referring to his meeting with FBI Director Kash Patel in July. The two sides discussed strengthening law enforcement cooperation, particularly efforts to prevent and combat transnational crime in the region. On the Thailand-Cambodia border situation, Anutin thanked US President Donald Trump for his constructive role in supporting efforts to ease tensions. He reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to international law, good-neighborly relations and a peaceful resolution through bilateral mechanisms, including implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Accords. On trade, Anutin reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to concluding an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with the United States as soon as possible. He said Thailand was ready to continue its long-standing relationship with the US and further strengthen the alliance, while expanding cooperation that benefits people in both countries and promoting regional peace, security and stability.

Saraburi Deputy Governor Admits No Prior Knowledge of Monastery Encroachment

Saraburi's deputy governor claimed ignorance of illegal monastery construction on forestry land in Muak Lek district, blaming limited staff and lack of public reports for the oversight during a National Anti-Corruption Commission inspection

Saraburi Deputy Governor Admits No Prior Knowledge of Monastery Encroachment
5d ago Khaosod

On August 13 in Muak Lek district, Saraburi province, Deputy Governor Lertshai Sakonsaovapak gave an interview during a National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) inspection of Wat Pa Chanjai, which has been accused of illegally encroaching on forestry department land. When asked whether the province had no prior knowledge despite visible construction on forest land, he said local officials have supervisory authority but cannot detect covert violations. He stated that once facts are discovered, legal procedures are followed and it falls to the NACC to determine if anyone committed wrongdoing or neglect.

When pressed on whether locals had reported irregularities earlier, Lertshai said there would be no report unless unusual activity or wrongdoing occurred. He stressed that cooperation depends on residents and media providing tips, adding that if people know of violations but do not report them to the province, authorities cannot act. He confirmed the province cooperates fully with the NACC and insisted staff numbers are limited—making proactive forest patrols impossible without prior information. He rejected suggestions the province was negligent, saying officials perform their duties completely in their areas.

When asked if local authorities should be pushed to conduct more active inspections, Lertshai replied, "We have only this many staff." He reiterated that the province acts on all reports and discoveries made before them. When asked whether delegating follow-up checks to local authorities might allow the matter to go quiet, he dismissed the concern, saying the case will not disappear and that all procedures take time.
