Narathiwat's military commander invoked martial law following a July 22 attack that killed 45 Rangers, granting troops expanded powers to search, detain suspects, and use force against militants in the province.

Narathiwat Commander Invokes Martial Law to Hunt Militants
24 Jul Khaosod

The Narathiwat Task Force commander has issued Martial Law Order No. 131/2567, signed by Major General Yodkhun Pungpaktr on July 22, invoking the Martial Law Act B.E. 2457 to enforce strict tactical and security measures across Narathiwat province. The order grants military authorities expanded powers to establish checkpoints, search vehicles and homes, and detain suspects linked to the unrest. It authorizes the use of armed force against militants deemed an immediate threat, provided actions meet necessity and proportionality standards. Civil authorities are directed to support military operations in counterinsurgency and peacekeeping efforts. The measures take effect immediately and remain in force until revoked. This escalation follows the July 22 attack on the 4509th Ranger Task Force unit in Tan Yong Mas subdistrict, Rangae district, which killed 45 Rangers. Authorities believe the attackers remain hidden in the area, posing serious risks to innocent civilians and their property, prompting the decisive action to secure the region and protect public safety.

Korat Candle Festival Returns With Anutin, Lisa Sculptures

Thailand's Korat Candle Festival returns July 28–30, 2026, featuring drone shows, traditional pottery art, and satirical candle sculptures of PM Anutin and pop star Lisa to celebrate Buddhist Lent traditions and boost local tourism.

Korat Candle Festival Returns With Anutin, Lisa Sculptures
24 Jul Khaosod

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — The Korat Candle Festival 2026 is set to return with a blend of Buddhist art, traditional craftsmanship, technology and pop culture, featuring a drone show, Dan Kwian pottery-inspired art and candle sculptures resembling Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and global Thai pop star Lisa.

The festival, themed "Buddhist Art and the Light of Faith," will take place from July 28–30, 2026, around the Thao Suranari Monument in Muang Nakhon Ratchasima district.

At a press conference on July 22, Nakhon Ratchasima deputy governor Wijit Kijvirat joined Nakhon Ratchasima Mayor Dr Wannarat Chankunakul and representatives from police, tourism, sports and cultural agencies to announce preparations for the annual event.

Organisers said the festival aims to preserve the traditional Buddhist Lent candle parade, promote local candle-carving craftsmanship and boost tourism in the province.

One of this year's major highlights will be a drone show combining modern technology with Buddhist history. The performance will depict the Buddha delivering his first sermon to the Five Ascetics on Asalha Puja Day through lights in the night sky.

The festival will also incorporate the traditional pottery craftsmanship of Dan Kwian into candle sculptures and Buddhist artworks, creating opportunities for young people and members of the public to learn local techniques and develop them for future candle floats.

Former deputy prime minister Suwat Liptapanlop is scheduled to preside over the opening parade, which will feature at least 13 candle floats.

The festival will also host competitions for Buddhist Lent candle floats for the royal trophy of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in categories A, B and C. A Pong Lang music competition for trophies from the prime minister and deputy prime minister will be held on July 29.

A distinctive feature of the Korat festival is its satirical political candle sculptures. This year, Phimai district has prepared a surprise with a 1.9-metre-tall wax figure resembling Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Candle sculptor Watchara Nadee said the figure depicts Anutin standing and making a hand gesture associated with the government's "40-60 Thai Chuai Thai Plus" economic stimulus measure.

The figure is intended to add colour, capture current trends and attract more tourists, organisers said.

Phimai district will also hold its own "Join Merit, Join Worship: Phimai Buddhist Lent Candle Parade" on July 28–29 at Phrommathat grounds before its floats move to the provincial event for the main competition.

Among the major contenders is Wat Derm in Phimai, a former champion of the royal trophy in Category A. Its enormous 20-metre-long, 5.15-metre-high and 4-metre-wide float uses around 8 tonnes of wax.

Candle craftsman Kiattisak "Chang Ko" Duangthong said the float has taken three months to create and is now more than 85% complete.

The float will depict the Buddha's journey to Tavatimsa Heaven.

Bogie Lion Supports Nonn After Late Performance Drama

Bogie Lion Supports Nonn After Late Performance Drama
24 Jul Khaosod

Young singer Nonn Thanon has faced online criticism and social media drama after audience members confronted him at a performance about arriving late to the stage, sparking multiple debates. On July 23, Bogie Lion (Bogie Nichada Weerasuthimash) attended the Thailand Y Content Awards 2025 at MCC Hall, The Mall Lifestore in Bangkapi and shared an update on Nonn's mental state.

Bogie Lion believes that misunderstandings about artists' stage times happen frequently because each event has different conditions and circumstances. She emphasized the need for clear communication and adherence to contractual agreements. She recounted experiencing situations where event organizers announced incorrect stage times, leading to artists being wrongly accused of running late.

Bogie Lion expressed confidence that Nonn will overcome this situation, noting that such incidents are common in the entertainment industry. She explained that various performance venues have different conditions, and different management strategies are needed for each job. The best approach, she said, is to clarify contracts between the record label, artist, and venue as thoroughly as possible, though some unexpected situations cannot be prevented.

Bogie shared a personal experience where an event told audiences she would perform at 6 p.m., though the actual deal was 4 p.m. The organizer then announced she was late, when in reality she was waiting as scheduled. She expressed frustration at not being able to defend herself, feeling obligated to the label, the event, and everyone involved, so she performed her best for the waiting audience, only to receive negative feedback afterward.

Regarding Nonn's current condition, Bogie expressed optimism that he will improve soon and sent encouragement. She also mentioned that Nonn is currently ill with influenza and has had to cancel several performances. She did not confirm whether they had spoken directly.

Officials Seize Illegal Resort on Koh Samui Forest

Officials seized the Overlap Stone 2 resort on Koh Samui after finding it illegally occupied 4.55 acres of protected forest land, with the Environment Ministry vowing strict prosecution of all encroachers on state resources.

Officials Seize Illegal Resort on Koh Samui Forest
24 Jul Khaosod

Environment Minister Suchat Chumklin announced on July 24 that he has ordered the Forestry Department to intensify enforcement against illegal encroachment of public areas and state resources, in line with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's policy prioritizing land recovery and law enforcement. The ministry is identifying publicly accessible beaches that have been illegally occupied by business operators and returning them for public use.

Chumklin received a report from Forestry Department Director-General Nikorn Sivirojanant about major business groups illegally occupying forest land on Koh Samui to operate tourism facilities. He immediately ordered field operations to investigate and make arrests.

On July 22, 2025, Udom Sakdit Palakavong Na Ayutthaya of the 11th Forest Resource Management Office (Surat Thani), along with Vivat Noo-in, head of forest protection and wildfire control, led a coordinated team including forest protection officers from Station 16 (Koh Samui), special forest operations units, and local administration officials from Koh Samui District.

The team inspected the Overlap Stone 2 resort located in Ban Tin Tha, Mueang District, Koh Samui. Satellite coordinates confirmed that the facility's structures encroached into protected forest area under the 1928 Forestry Act, spanning 4 rai 3 ngan 35 square wah (approximately 4.55 acres). Officers seized 33 structures and structures in total. The forest protection station was assigned to compile evidence and records for investigation by Bo Put Police Station, with criminal proceedings to follow against those responsible.

Chumklin stated that he has directed the Forestry Department to coordinate with all relevant agencies to expedite case resolution and pursue legal action against violators swiftly. "The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will not tolerate anyone unlawfully profiting from state resources, whether they are influential figures, investors, or business groups. Any encroachment on state land will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," he said.

Thailand Should Strengthen Labor Standards to Boost Competitiveness

Thailand's Chamber of Commerce urges the government and private sector to strengthen labor standards and supply chain transparency rather than worry about US tariffs, which impose similar rates on most competing nations.

Thailand Should Strengthen Labor Standards to Boost Competitiveness
24 Jul Khaosod

Thai chamber of commerce argues that US tariffs on Thailand versus competitors differ only marginally and should not be a major concern, recommending faster improvements in labor standards, supply chain transparency, and long-term competitive capacity.

Pont Aramwattananont, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Thai Chamber Federation, discussed the US Section 301 tariffs imposed on over 60 trading partners including Thailand. While Thailand faces a 12.5% tariff rate, most competing nations face similar impacts, keeping overall US market competition on relatively level ground. Countries with slightly lower tariffs around 10% may have minor advantages, but the margin is narrower than previous measures and poses no significant threat to Thai business competitiveness.

Pont stated that the US is focusing on forced labor and excess production capacity. The private sector views Thailand as having no systemic forced labor issues, but laws and related measures must be enforced more clearly to build trading partner confidence and meet international standards. This will help Thailand compete fairly with countries that may receive exemptions in the future.

Another critical issue being monitored is excess capacity product measures, which the US is still examining. These could affect certain product groups, requiring urgent negotiation of reciprocal trade agreements to balance commerce with the US.

The most important step now is close government-private sector collaboration to prepare data and negotiating positions with the US for mutually beneficial outcomes. Trade agreements must reduce obstacles and preserve Thailand's long-term competitive capacity.

Pont added that the Thai Chamber of Commerce is ready to represent the private sector by gathering data, recommendations, and impact assessments from businesses to support the Ministry of Commerce. The chamber's university has conducted analyses the chamber will support, ensuring Thailand's approach is careful and balanced between protecting national interests and building investor and trading partner confidence.

"Thailand should use this opportunity to accelerate improvements in labor standards, supply chain transparency, and trade agreement negotiations, turning this crisis into an opportunity to strengthen long-term competitiveness," Pont said.

Army Claims Insurgents Used AI to Fake Tattoo Photo

Thai Army spokesperson dismissed a tattoo photo of a suspect in a Narathiwat shooting as AI-generated, claiming no Muslim insurgent would have such a marking due to Islamic teachings.

Army Claims Insurgents Used AI to Fake Tattoo Photo
24 Jul Khaosod

On July 24, at Thai Army Command headquarters, Spokesperson Pol. Col. Vinthai Suvaree addressed the circulation of a tattoo image allegedly appearing on the arm of a gunman involved in the shooting at a ranger base and checkpoint in Narathiwat province. He expressed skepticism that the image was genuine, arguing that a Muslim perpetrator would not have a tattoo, as this contradicts Islamic teachings. The spokesman concluded the image was AI-generated and likely created by anti-government networks seeking to distort facts and manipulate public opinion.

Vinthai noted that the image quality was unnaturally sharp and overly refined, making it appear artificial—something he believes most people can recognize. He described the tactic as an old method that no longer deceives society, given that modern news consumers have developed sufficient critical thinking skills. Those spreading such images, he suggested, should face public scrutiny regarding their true motives. He urged all Thais to collectively protect government officers and innocent civilians while preventing those with ill intentions toward the country from gaining a foothold in society.

Police Bust Fake Father Scheme, Arrest Four More Suspects
24 Jul Khaosod

On July 24, 2569, Deputy Police Chief General Somran Nualma and National Police Commander Nopsilon Poolswat, along with officials from the Interior Ministry, Public Health Ministry, and Special Investigation Division, conducted raids at two key locations to dismantle the "Thai Father" network that falsely registered over 1,500 foreign children. Four additional suspects were arrested: Thai nationals Mongkol and Wawe, who served as fake fathers, and Chinese nationals Ms. Si and Mr. Hu, a Chinese couple.

During a search of a luxury home in the Mengjai area owned by the Chinese couple, police recovered passports, photographs, birth certificates, health and life insurance documents, and bank records. Ms. Si, who speaks Thai fluently, tearfully claimed she had not hired Mongkol but rather that he was a close friend willing to help out of goodwill. She stated she had worked in Thailand for nearly 20 years, loved the country, and simply wanted her child to have Thai nationality and an easier life, insisting she was unaware this arrangement was illegal.

Ms. Si revealed she had even consulted a doctor at the hospital while pregnant about the arrangement, so she did not think it was wrong. When asked who suggested the idea, she said people had mentioned it and that Mongkol, whom she had known since 2558, was a Thai friend without a girlfriend or children who willingly became her child's father at no cost. Her husband, Mr. Hu, refused to be interviewed, claiming he knew nothing of the operation and that he had resided in Thailand since 2006, a total of 20 years.

Nangkol told reporters he "didn't want to say much" and insisted he was not paid, as they worked at the same place and he was willing to help because he did not know it was illegal. During this operation, police also expanded their investigation into a private hospital and found three suspicious children, with two cases already showing signs of fraud and one still under investigation. The Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA) N.I.C.E. filed charges with Huay Kwang Police Station against all those involved. Investigators gathered detailed evidence, including witness statements, medical records, and birth registration documents.

Parliament Committee Finds Excessive Spending Across Multiple Agencies
24 Jul Khaosod

On July 24, 2025, at Parliament, Sirikanya Tansakul, a Pheu Thai list MP and deputy party leader, discussed the overall budget bill review for fiscal year 2570 in the special budget committee. Over the past three weeks, numerous agencies have had their budgets cut significantly. However, during the first week of subcommittee deliberation, Sirikanya noted that despite major cuts, abnormally high budget items and redundancies persist. The Digital Economy Ministry received a 30% budget increase, mostly for central government cloud infrastructure, adding 5 billion baht to this year's budget. She explained that when examining individual agencies, separate cloud system purchases and leases were discovered, creating duplication. The subcommittee reviewing digital government integration plans suspended agencies seeking additional cloud purchases, requiring certification from the Digital Economy Ministry that there is no redundancy before approval. Sirikanya also flagged the Social Development Ministry's cuts to disability benefits while allocating funds for internal Data Center projects with excessive costs: a 200,000-baht fire exit door, an 800,000-baht backup power supply, and 15,000-baht office chairs per unit. The subcommittee, which began work only this week, has already identified numerous irregularities and excessively inflated line items requiring adjustment. She concluded that despite government claims of significant self-imposed cuts to cover pensions and healthcare costs, examination of individual projects continues to reveal overpriced items.

Sirikunnya Defends Pawut Over TH-AI Passport Pause

Pheu Thai MP Sirikunnya defended colleague Pawut's refusal to discuss the TH-AI Passport project, saying he lacks close involvement and is preoccupied with legal cases rather than fearing compromise of other matters.

Sirikunnya Defends Pawut Over TH-AI Passport Pause
24 Jul Khaosod

At 9:30 a.m. on July 24, 2025, at Parliament, Sirikunnya Tansukul, a Pheu Thai party list MP and deputy party leader, addressed the case of Pawut Pongsawittayaphanyu, a fellow Pheu Thai list MP, who declined to participate in an interview, saying he was unable to discuss the TH-AI Passport project due to lack of close involvement and concerns about jeopardizing a Forex-related case.

Sirikunnya clarified that Pawut was not actually refusing to discuss the matter out of fear of compromising the Forex case—that explanation appeared to have been added later. She said Pawut simply stated he was not closely following the issue at this time and referred inquiries to Ratchanok Srinork, another party list MP, who is actively tracking the project. Sirikunnya attributed Pawut's absence from the follow-up to the toll of multiple lawsuits requiring him to focus on legal defense.

Sirikunnya added that the Pheu Thai party continues its investigation through parliamentary committee mechanisms, including the budget oversight committee and the legal affairs and human rights committee, which have already sent letters to various agencies requesting further inquiry and investigation into the matter. She indicated that developments are likely to continue.

Truck Driver's Wife Apologizes Over Near-Miss with Influencers

Truck Driver's Wife Apologizes Over Near-Miss with Influencers
24 Jul Khaosod

Following the incident involving influencers Jai Ratchanon and Haru Supakob crossing a street with their children near Rom Hub Market in Samut Songkhram, where a pickup truck accelerated toward them, police deputy Sangad Baubamdee recently visited Mrs. A, 37, the driver's wife, to question her about the incident and deliver supplies to assist the family.

Mrs. A apologized tearfully, explaining that her 44-year-old husband was driving to pick up their child from the hospital at the time and did not intend to harm anyone. She stated her husband was rushing because he wore a prosthetic leg. She disclosed that her husband has since passed away on May 24 following a motorcycle accident on May 7, after spending approximately 17 days in hospital.

"I admit that hearing about this in the news causes me great stress," she said. "I have no milk to feed my child, so he must drink special formula because he is allergic to cow's milk. I want to apologize to Jai and Haru on my husband's behalf. If his manners were poor, I apologize. Now he is gone, and there is nothing more I can say. I truly ask for your forgiveness."

Mrs. A's sister added that she contacted the media to prevent similar incidents in the future. She noted that because the truck driver has died, the full truth cannot be known, and the incident occurred three months ago. She appealed for mercy and understanding, saying some people have accused them of lying despite the incident being completely genuine.

Deputy Sangad disclosed that police investigated the matter due to its prominence on social media and the damage to Samut Songkhram's reputation. Officers located the vehicle, which was found to be a manual transmission pickup with a stiff clutch. Investigators learned the driver had already passed away and was disabled on his left side, which affected his ability to operate the clutch properly—a challenge especially on steep inclines. Sangad urged social media users to discuss the incident fairly without attacking the deceased driver, noting that the difficulty with the manual clutch and his disability likely contributed to the incident rather than any intentional wrongdoing.
