Newborn Found Abandoned in Temple Bathroom, Villager Rescues

Deputy Inspector Proanant Santiwimol of Muang Samut Songkhram Police Station responded to a report of an abandoned infant found in the bathroom of Sri Sattha Tham Temple in Khlong Khien Subdistrict, Muang District, Samut Songkhram Province on September 19. Officers and rescue personnel from the Sarprachon Samut Songkhram Foundation discovered a newborn boy with his umbilical cord still attached, wrapped in a pink towel and stuffed inside a black backpack bearing Ultraman Cosmos lettering. The child was given immediate first aid and transferred to Somdej Phra Phutthaleirt Hospital for further care.

Somsak Nilvat, 49, who discovered the infant, recounted that he had gone out around 10:15 PM to fish and catch shrimp. He walked past the bathroom and heard unusual sounds but paid no attention. About half an hour later, on his way back, he heard a child crying. Finding the bathroom pitch-black with no lights, he opened the door and was shocked to find a newborn boy with his umbilical cord still attached, wrapped in a towel and placed inside a Ultraman-patterned student backpack. He immediately alerted police.

Initial investigation suggests the mother may be a local teenager or migrant worker, possibly unprepared for pregnancy and frightened by the consequences. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and surrounding routes to identify and apprehend the mother for questioning and legal proceedings.
