PEA Issues Electrical Safety Guide for Flooding
The Provincial Electricity Authority warns residents to move electrical equipment to higher ground before floods arrive and avoid using any appliances in standing water to prevent electrocution hazards.
The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) urges residents to closely monitor weather updates and public safety warnings to prepare for flooding at all times. PEA has issued safety recommendations for electrical use during floods or standing water:
Before water enters your home or grounds, immediately move electrical equipment and essential items to high or safe locations above the expected flood level.
For single-story homes, discontinue all electrical use entirely. Do not operate any electrical appliances while wet or standing in water. Never open or close electrical switches, and never use plugs submerged in floodwater as this creates serious electrocution hazards.
For two-story homes with separate switches per floor, cut power to the lower floor only if flooding threatens it. If water remains standing for an extended period and residents must stay in the home, use appliances only on the upper floor. Have PEA staff or a qualified electrician disconnect switches on the lower floor and separate the upper and lower circuits for safety.
For inquiries, electrical faults, or assistance, contact PEA's Customer Information Center at 1129 or the PEA Contact Center available 24 hours daily.
