Phang Nga Driver Surrenders After Fatal Hit‑and‑Run
Phang Nga police have arrested the driver of a pickup truck who ran a red light and killed a German couple crossing a zebra crossing in Khao Lak. The 37‑year‑old suspect surrendered on October 3, 2026 and faces charges of causing death by reckless driving, reckless endangerment, and failing to render aid. Authorities are testing him for alcohol or drugs and have sent the victims’ bodies to Phuket for autopsy.
According to Pol. Col. Jettra Chantapoom, superintendent of Khao Lak Police Station, investigators reviewed CCTV footage and found that on the evening of October 2, 2026 the suspect was driving from Takua Pa district toward Tai Mueang district, keeping close to the median of the road. When he reached the scene, a community crosswalk, he drove through a red light and collided with the two German tourists who were walking from the median to the restaurant side, causing fatal injuries. After the impact, the suspect fled the scene toward Tai Mueang without stopping to help or reporting the incident to authorities. On October 3, 2026 he arrived at Khao Lak police station, turned himself in, and handed over the pickup truck, which showed front‑end damage, for investigators to retain as evidence. Police initially charged him with three offenses: causing death by reckless driving, reckless driving that may cause danger to persons or property, and failing to stop and provide appropriate assistance, identify himself, and report the accident immediately. The suspect confessed to the charges. Officers are testing his blood for alcohol or drugs; if substances are found, additional charges will be filed. Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Vachira Hospital in Phuket for autopsy, and officials are coordinating with the victims’ families and the German embassy to proceed with further arrangements.
