Plankton Bloom Invades Cha-am and Hua Hin Waters After Floods
A plankton bloom has invaded the coastal waters of Cha-am and Hua Hin after recent floods, turning the sea green and brown and threatening local tourism. Dr. Thon Thamrongnawasawat says the blooms have become three times more common and could ruin the Gulf if not addressed quickly. He urges swift action to prevent long-term environmental and economic damage.
Assistant Professor Dr. Thon Thamrongnawasawat from Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Fisheries analyzed satellite imagery and oceanographic data, confirming the bloom’s arrival at Cha-am and Hua Hin. He observed vivid green and brown plankton reaching the shore, noting that such blooms now occur three times more frequently than in the past. Dr. Thon stressed that the phenomenon is an urgent threat from Pattaya to Cha-am and Hua Hin, warning that without intervention the entire Gulf could turn foul-smelling and damage Thailand’s tourism image.
