Popular Influencer Reports Fake Account Impersonation to Cyber Police
Teen influencer Patty filed a police complaint after scammers created a fake Facebook account impersonating her with over 200,000 followers, using it to solicit money and damage her reputation since 2566.
On September 4, 2569, the 17-year-old influencer Patty met with Police Colonel Sirivat Deepho, commander of the Technology Crime Investigation Division 1 at Ratchada Government Center, to file a complaint after being impersonated by scammers since 2566. The fake Facebook page has accumulated over 200,000 followers, raising concerns that people could be deceived into transferring money or becoming confused when trying to contact her for work and sending funds to the wrong account.
Patty explained that she was unsure whether the links posted were safe. She had previously attempted to contact the fake page asking them to delete it, but the scammers read her message without responding before blocking her. She initially hoped they would stop and remove the page, but they continued posting photos and crude, inappropriate language that damaged her reputation. They also posted product sales links designed to collect money from unsuspecting victims.
"I was genuinely worried that people would be deceived and suffer real losses, so I came to report this to the police," Patty said.
Police Colonel Sirivat stated that cyber police frequently encounter this type of impersonation targeting people with large followings. Police will investigate the fake page to identify the perpetrators and will request that the fraudulent account be shut down. He warned potential offenders that while creating fake accounts is easy, the damage is significant and carries legal consequences. Under the Computer Crime Act, penalties include imprisonment of up to 5 years or fines not exceeding 100,000 baht. Police can also investigate cases where the scammer uses a stolen profile picture.
