Activist Warns of 34 Illegal Data Centers in Bangkok
An activist has flagged 34 illegal data centers operating in Bangkok that store massive fuel quantities—up to 500,000 liters each—without proper oversight, raising safety concerns and questions of government corruption.
On September 4, Sudarat Keyuraphan posted on Facebook questioning how the government and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration issued construction permits for 34 data centers in central Bangkok, despite these facilities violating regulations by storing enormous quantities of fuel—between 200,000 and 500,000 liters—which she described as equivalent to keeping explosives in the middle of the city. She questioned whether corruption was involved in the approval process. In her post, Keyuraphan criticized both current and previous governments for inviting foreign investment in data centers and promoting it as an achievement in attracting investment, while failing to establish proper legal oversight of the industry. She warned that the risks to public safety and the environment have been left entirely to ordinary citizens, with the state assuming no responsibility, despite the massive quantities of fuel being stored at these facilities.
