Elite Expeditions announced that Nirmal Purja, 43, a celebrated British-Nepali mountaineer, was among 10 people killed in an avalanche on Broad Peak (K3), the world's 12th highest mountain at 8,047 meters, in Pakistan's Karakoram range on July 30. Three members of Purja's climbing team—American Mallory Gaes, Omani Nadira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthi, and Nepali Pur Bahadur Gurung—were found dead in the disaster.

Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah confirmed Purja's death, stating: "The tragic loss of six Nepali climbers and four foreign nationals, including world-record holder Nirmal Purja, in Pakistan's Karakoram range has shocked us. Their history of courage, dedication, and sacrifice will forever inspire us."

Purja was born in Nepal and later served in the British Army. In 2019, he became the fastest person to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters, breaking the previous record by over seven years. He gained worldwide recognition after Netflix released the documentary "14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible" about his journey.

In his final post on X from July 27, Purja revealed he had not originally planned to climb Broad Peak. "The initial plan was to climb only G2," he wrote, referring to Gasherbrum 2, another Karakoram peak. Before departing for Pakistan, he realized that summiting Broad Peak would leave him just one mountain shy of becoming "the first person in history to climb all fourteen 8,000-meter peaks twice without supplemental oxygen."

2 Aug Khaosod

A 29-year-old southern Thai musician and music video actor died early on August 1st after his motorcycle fell into a large open drainage ditch on a road near Tha Thon Temple in Bang Klam District, Songkhla Province. Police and rescue workers from the Mitrapap Samakkhi Foundation in Haad Yai found the victim, Waiyathaya (nickname Ann), lying face-down with his head submerged in water, and his overturned motorcycle in the ditch. The body was taken to Haad Yai Hospital for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Friends and relatives gathered at the accident site that night to seek justice, believing the incident was caused by careless construction work and the complete absence of warning signs or protective barriers. Sataphorn, a close friend of the victim, stated: "The accident location is extremely dangerous with no advance warning signs, insufficient lighting, and no metal covers over the dug ditch. Someone on a motorcycle has been injured falling into this hole before. We want the contractor to take responsibility, and this tragedy should serve as a warning to improve construction site safety."

The victim was described as hardworking and talented, performing as a southern Thai musician and music video actor. He supported his family—including his 3-year-old son—by working multiple jobs including construction labor and food delivery. His 70-year-old grandmother, Phontip, tearfully recounted that the boy's parents had separated and his mother lives abroad. She recalled that just before the accident, her grandson had mentioned not working with her on Saturday due to a Buddhist ordination ceremony he planned to attend. "I never imagined those words were an omen of something tragic," she said, adding that her great-grandson is now left without a father.

Police received a report of a pickup truck crashing down onto the Sri Rat Expressway (Phase 2) near Sanam Luang at around 4:30 a.m. on August 2, 2025. The incident occurred in a construction zone near Ratchadamnoen Soi (Dr. Ling) in Makkasan, Ratchathewi District, Bangkok. Officers from the Expressway Station 2, Din Daeng Police, expressway rescue, Erawan emergency responders, and Poh Teck Tung Foundation volunteers rushed to the scene.

At the location, authorities found a gray Bangkok-registered pickup truck with severe front-end damage, lying upside down on a concrete debris pile. The driver, a man aged 30–35, had suffered a fractured skull and nasal bleeding. A 3–4-year-old girl was also injured critically. Both victims were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.

According to construction workers who witnessed the incident, they heard a loud impact sound on the expressway before the truck plunged down and struck the concrete pile with great force. The driver emerged from the vehicle bleeding profusely from the head. When workers approached, they found the young girl trapped in the wreckage and immediately alerted emergency services.

Initial investigation revealed skid marks and damage to concrete barriers at a junction on the expressway, suggesting the truck was traveling at high speed. Officers believe that when the vehicle reached the intersection, it lost control and became airborne before crashing to the ground below. Authorities are awaiting the victims' recovery before conducting a full investigation into the exact cause of the accident.

Anti-Corruption Theater Project Enlists Youth With Actress Mint Chalida

Youth across Thailand's Eastern Region are collaborating with actress Mint Chalida and fellow performers to write and stage anti-corruption plays, helping young people understand how dishonesty affects society and their future.

Anti-Corruption Theater Project Enlists Youth With Actress Mint Chalida
2 Aug Khaosod

The National Anti-Corruption Fund (NAAC) is driving a creative awareness-building initiative titled "Anti-Corruption Drama Workshop: Youth Against Corruption in the Eastern Region" to instill ethics and moral values in the younger generation. The project creates a platform for children and youth to express themselves, collaborate on writing plays that address corruption from their perspective, and build psychological defenses for a transparent and sustainable Thai society.

The project's centerpiece is an opportunity for participating youth to perform short plays alongside celebrated actress Mint Chalida Vijitrwongthong and actors Jub Jaeng Wimonpan, Chaleejangha, Tar Pongthanit, and Jitraranon. These artists serve as mentors and role models, sharing experiences and performing alongside students from Dara Samuthorn School in Si Racha, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement and positive energy.

Key benefits include developing critical thinking by allowing youth to write, analyze, and interpret corruption problems firsthand, helping them grasp the profound impact of corruption on society beyond mere theory. The initiative also develops life skills through theatrical arts, building confidence, teamwork, responsibility, and creative communication. When the youth-created plays are shared publicly, they become a voice resonating through families, schools, and communities, raising awareness of the importance of integrity.

Working with role models like Mint Chalida not only builds children's confidence but also leverages celebrity influence to effectively advance social causes. Student Jirachatya Singhasenanee reflected: "At first, I thought corruption was just an adult problem, but by working together to write and interpret the issue, I realized that dishonesty from our school days impacts our country's future." Fellow student Gawintip Bunma added: "We're proud to use our voices through theater to send a message that Thai youth will not tolerate corruption."

Participation in this project develops performance and teamwork skills while fostering responsible citizens who understand the importance of integrity—a cornerstone for the country's future development. The anti-corruption drama project is more than entertainment; it is a learning space that unites youth and community members in building a better society.

At 12:10 a.m. on August 2, 2025, senior police commanders, including Gen. Siam Bunsombun, led a raid with more than 100 officers and special forces armed with weapons and tactical equipment to surround a condominium unit in Kannayao district. The operation targeted Noparat, known as Bangsan, 23, who was suspected of shooting and killing one person and wounding two others at Bung Thong Luang Temple in the Ladphrao area around 5 p.m. on August 1.

After the temple shooting, Bangsan and his girlfriend fled to a second-floor room in a condominium where he rented a unit. Police negotiators attempted to persuade him to surrender without success. A century-old wooden house in Chachoengsao's Ban Bueng district burned to near-total destruction on August 1, with the cause still under investigation despite the owner having switched off the main circuit breaker before leaving.

Century-Old Wooden House Gutted By Fire in Chachoengsao
1 Aug Khaosod

A fire destroyed nearly an entire wooden house over 100 years old in Ban Bueng district, Chachoengsao province, on August 1 at 8 p.m. Police from Ban Bueng station and local firefighters responded to the wooden house fire in Moo 3, Tambon Nong Samsak, Ban Bueng subdistrict.

When responders arrived, the old wooden structure was ablaze intensely, with flames and thick smoke billowing into the sky. Because the house was built primarily of wood, the fire spread rapidly. Firefighters rushed to deploy water cannons to contain the blaze, eventually controlling it, but the house suffered near-total destruction.

According to the owner, 78-year-old Tamit (surname withheld), the wooden house had been built and passed down through generations for over 100 years. He said that on the morning of the fire, he left to visit his daughter and had switched off the main circuit breaker before departing—a routine safety practice he follows regularly. He received a phone call informing him of the fire. The cause remains unknown, as no one was present in the house when the fire broke out.

Police documented the scene and coordinated with forensic officers to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the actual cause of the fire. The damage assessment is still ongoing.

Prison Defends Release of Inmates Before Mass Murder Case

The Department of Corrections defended its release of inmates connected to a mass murder case, stating both were freed upon completing court-ordered sentences and one was placed under post-release monitoring as required by law.

Prison Defends Release of Inmates Before Mass Murder Case
1 Aug Khaosod

The Department of Corrections issued a clarification statement on August 1 responding to media and public questions about the prison system and the release of serious offenders back into society, which has raised public safety concerns and affected tourism in Chon Buri province. The department expressed sincere condolences to families of victims of this shocking incident and explained that both former inmates were strictly controlled under court sentences and released upon sentence completion.

Thana ("Pong") Geot Thong was transferred from Pattaya Special Prison to Rayong Central Prison on February 22, 2021, for attempted murder, illegal weapons violations, and drug offenses, with a sentence of 7 years, 7 months, and 25 days, expiring on June 5, 2026. Throughout his imprisonment, he received no special benefits such as royal pardons, sentence suspension, or time reduction and was released upon sentence completion as ordered by the court.

Before his release, the Department of Corrections conducted risk assessments through a prison committee comprising the warden, provincial probation representatives, provincial police, district officials, and health representatives, who recommended post-release monitoring measures (JSOC) under the 2022 Act on Measures to Prevent Recidivism in Sexual and Violent Crimes. The committee submitted this recommendation to the provincial prosecutor, who petitioned the court for a post-release monitoring order under Section 24 of the law. On January 13, 2026, Rayong Provincial Court approved a 2-year monitoring order, which included restrictions on risky activities, reporting to probation officers every three months, and participation in rehabilitation programs as directed.

Thangchai Srinon was convicted of methamphetamine use and was normally released from Pattaya Special Prison on September 3, 2025, and was not subject to the JSOC law.

The Department of Corrections affirmed that it did not abandon or neglect its responsibility for preventing recidivism but acted fully within its legal authority, from imprisonment through release, including inmate classification, risk assessment, court recommendations for post-release monitoring, and information sharing with relevant agencies to enable proper supervision and behavioral control of released offenders according to court conditions, and remains ready to coordinate behavioral intelligence with relevant agencies to support prosecutions and close legal gaps to safeguard public life and property to the fullest extent.

Thailand's national team faced Malaysia in their second Group B match of the 2026 AFC Hung Dae Cup at Rajamangala Stadium on August 1st. Thailand came into the match having defeated Laos 5-0 in their opening game, while Malaysia had already played two matches—a 2-1 win over Myanmar and a 4-0 demolition of Laos for six points. Thailand ultimately won 2-0 to take the group lead.

After the match, coach Anthony Hudson said: "I must say we are proud of all our players who performed excellently and achieved our goal of winning without conceding. Towards the end of the game, we saw four or five players with cramps, so we need to accelerate fitness recovery."

Hudson also defended his choice of Yotstkorn Burapaa to take penalties despite having never scored from them in club football. "We had training before the match and Yotstkorn performed better than others, so we selected him," Hudson explained.

On low attendance, Hudson said: "We need to improve our playing standard to attract more fans to the stadium. However, we thank the fans who came to support us—it gave the coaching staff and players great encouragement."

Hudson praised Malaysia's performance: "Malaysia played well with several players who gave us concern, but we must credit our players for handling their tactical plan effectively."

Sarach Yooyian, Thailand's midfielder and man of the match, said: "We played as a team today. My personal confidence was already high, and executing the coach's plan boosted it further. I quite admired Malaysia's Secchio Aguero's style, with his excellent ball-winning ability. In our next home match, we hope more fans will come to watch another exciting game."

Malaysia coach Tan Cheng Ho expressed disappointment, noting that while his team played well, they could not overcome the better side and hoped the experience would benefit them going forward.

Thailand's next match will be an away fixture against the Philippines at New Clark City Stadium in Capas on August 20th at 8:00 p.m.

According to accounts, the officer's mother had called Din Daeng Police Station saying she could not contact her son and asked them to check on him. A friend then traveled to his apartment and notified police, who assisted in the investigation until the body was discovered.

The Huay Kwang Police Station investigation team sent the body for autopsy and is coordinating with relatives for funeral arrangements.
