Red Line Extension Construction Launches for Bangkok-Area Commuters
Construction has begun on Bangkok's Red Line extension, adding two new routes spanning 29.34 kilometers with 13 stations across Pathum Thani, Bangkok, and Nakhon Pathom, expected to open by 2029.
The State Railway of Thailand has opened a construction site for the Red Line extension project, which will add two new routes—Siriraj to Taling Chan to Salaya—and three additional stations between Rangsit and Thammasat University's Rangsit campus. Unique Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited is the contractor, with the State Railway targeting project completion and service launch by 2029 to help reduce travel times and address traffic congestion in Pathum Thani, Bangkok, and Nakhon Pathom.
The Siriraj-Taling Chan-Salaya route with three extra stations at Rama VI Bridge, Bang Kruay-MEA, and Ban Chimpli spans 20.50 kilometers and costs 14.72 billion baht to build. The line will include 13.83 kilometers at ground level and 6.67 kilometers elevated, with nine stations: Siriraj, Bang Khun Non, Taling Chan Market, Rama VI Bridge, Bang Kruay-MEA, Ban Chimpli, Kanchanaphisek, Sala Dharmmasophon, and Salaya. The entire route requires no land expropriation.
The Rangsit to Thammasat University Rangsit section measures 8.84 kilometers and costs 6.057 billion baht, built at ground level with four stations: Khlong Neung, Bangkok University, Chiang Rak, and Thammasat University Rangsit. The project primarily uses existing railway land, with 14 rai of land required for station and access road construction.
