Scania Tops European Truck Sales in Thailand for Decade
Scania has maintained its position as Thailand's top-selling European truck brand for over a decade by deeply understanding customer needs and Thai regulations. The company uses a modular engineering system to customize trucks for specific transport tasks while also investing in driver training and premium cabin design to attract new-generation operators.
Scania, the European truck sales champion, reveals its strategy of specifying trucks to satisfy both owners and drivers, emphasizing 'right, satisfied, fit-for-purpose.' It also enhances driver training for maximum efficiency.
Scania attributes its success as the European truck sales leader to precise vehicle specification — capturing every detail of customer needs from both owners and drivers. Leveraging the strengths of its modular engineering system, Scania allocates world-class components to match the exact requirements of Thai transport businesses and regulations. Simultaneously, the company invests in advanced driver training covering technical skills for optimal vehicle use, safety, and instilling professional driving standards.
Viratch Eiadthong, Pre-Sales Engineering Manager at Scania Siam Co., Ltd., revealed one of the key strategies that has propelled Scania to be Thailand's European truck sales champion for over 10 consecutive years. He said the core step before introducing any new model is a deep study of work patterns and needs of all customer groups in every dimension. Engineering teams coordinate with sales and marketing, going into the field to gather real-world usage data, including Thai legal requirements such as weight and height limits, to ensure compliance and practicality. Engineering acts as the bridge linking customer needs and sales to define the optimal truck specifications for the market.
Moreover, Scania pays close attention to the unique details of the Thai transport market, especially the trend among new-generation executives, business heirs, and younger drivers who place high importance on 'premium appearance and image.' Some already rate satisfaction at 70-80% based solely on the luxury of the truck exterior and cabin — provided that performance, engine, and drivetrain also meet job demands. Scania's European premium image is thus a significant factor in purchase decisions.
On basic performance, customers already acknowledge Scania's excellence, which stems from its modular system philosophy. Thousands of world-standard modules are combined, allowing engineering teams to freely select and adjust specifications by over 50% — including engine size, transmission, and axle ratios — to deliver trucks perfectly suited to specific tasks without wasted cost or compromised efficiency. Vehicle delivery is therefore not just selling a vehicle but delivering top-tier engineering tailored for the customer.
Scania's care extends beyond vehicle performance and capability. An uncompromising part of its DNA is respect for human dignity and equality for everyone in the transport chain, especially drivers, whom Scania views as a respected and vital profession. The cab is ergonomically designed to reduce fatigue, injury, and stress from long-haul work. When drivers operate better, safer, and less tired trucks, overall road safety for society improves.
In today's Thai truck market, Scania offers standard models covering every application: compact cab models for short-haul and container work (e.g., P 420 CP17L), large cab models with dual 835-liter fuel tanks for long-haul cross-border transport (e.g., P 420 CP20H), and two-axle models for heavy 70-80 ton loads (e.g., P 460 CP20H 6).
