Ukrainian cinema took centre stage at Bangkok's Art and Culture Centre on Monday, where chargé d'affaires Viktor Semenov linked the country's cultural heritage to its struggle to endure war and Russia's responsibility for the deaths of thousands of innocent people.

The opening was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, Thai government officials and parliamentarians, as well as business representatives, members of the Ukrainian community and media.

Semenov spoke about how Ukraine's 35th anniversary of independence was an occasion for reflection and pride.

"Culture never exists in a vacuum," he told Thai officials, diplomats and other guests. "It grows out of what people live through and it is never guaranteed. It can be banned, erased or destroyed."

He said Ukraine had spent almost a third of its modern history living through war since Russia's aggression began, and described the conflict as a test of international rules intended to protect nations large and small.

After speaking about Ukrainian soldiers and civilians killed, wounded, displaced or held in captivity, Semenov invited the audience to honour the innocent victims of the war with a minute of silence.

The ceremony concluded with Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, Serhii Parajanov's 1965 classic. The embassy noted that the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio, where the film was made, was hit by Russian missiles in June resulting in extensive damage to the studio which is said to house over 100,000 costumes.

Parajanov's acclaimed 1965 film tells the tragic love story of two young Hutsuls from feuding families in the Carpathian Mountains. It is a lyrical tale where grief, religion, tradition, and music intertwine through vivid, symbolic imagery.

Semenov said the film had carried a significance far beyond its story. Made at a time when Ukrainian cultural expression faced pressure under Soviet rule, it brought Ukrainian language, music and traditions vividly to the screen.

"It was revolutionary for one simple reason," he said. "It said Ukrainian culture exists and that it is beautiful."

Parajanov was later imprisoned by Soviet authorities, Semenov noted, but his work endured and is now regarded as a classic of Ukrainian cinema.

Semenov also thanked Thailand for its support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as humanitarian assistance.

The festival, which runs until 6 August, marks the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. The embassy said all films in the programme are being shown in Thailand for the first time.

The Bureau of the Budget reported that spending in the first 10 months of fiscal year 2569 reached 3.19 trillion baht, or 84% of the total budget. The bureau expressed confidence in accelerating investment spending in the final two months to meet the target of 75% by year-end. Bureau Director Patrisia Mongkolvnich disclosed that out of the 3.38 trillion baht budgeted under the Appropriation Act, 89.6% has been committed and 3.19 trillion baht, or 84% of the total allocation, has been disbursed as of July 31, 2569. Regular expenditures have reached 91.4%, meeting planned targets, while investment spending has committed 651,000 million baht or 81.1% of the investment budget and disbursed 470,000 million baht, representing 58.57%—only about 2% below the monthly target of 61%. The bureau remains confident that over the final two months of the fiscal year, investment spending can be accelerated to reach the Cabinet's target of 75% by fiscal year-end. Regarding concerns about a private company that won a bid for a flood drainage tunnel project in Bangkok who is currently undergoing debt restructuring through bankruptcy court, Bureau Director Patrisia clarified that at the time of bidding, the company had not been delisted from the business registry and was not in a disqualified status, so it retained the right to participate in the bidding process according to regulations. As of August 4, 2569, Bangkok has not formally requested the Bureau of the Budget to investigate this matter, and the bureau continues to monitor the situation through normal channels without interfering in the implementing agency's operations. The Bureau of the Budget maintains a system for evaluating the qualifications and operational performance of contractors according to standards, with the latest assessment round recently closed and under review. Any contractor failing to submit data or participate in the assessment will be removed from the system according to regulations.

Actress Becky Rebecca Armstrong is juggling an incredibly packed schedule. She recently appeared at the UNIQLO 2026 Fall & Winter collection launch at Dusit Thani Bangkok, reflecting the concept of "Modern City Feelings."

Becky is preparing five new songs that will debut together at her birthday concert in November. When asked about her workload, she laughed and said, "I'm doing a lot right now—preparing music and managing a huge home construction project." She confirmed that all five songs have already been recorded and will be unveiled at her birthday celebration.

She's also training intensively for the HYROX competition, an unexpected challenge she's decided to take on. Her team is called "Team Armstrong not so strong." Despite limited rehearsal time before the competition, Becky emphasized wanting to enjoy it rather than push herself too hard. "Running is the toughest part," she noted, as the competition involves multiple running segments interspersed with other physical challenges like skiing and rowing.

When asked about her fitness preparation, Becky explained she's running as much as possible since the competition emphasizes that element. However, she's careful not to overtrain because her work schedule continues afterward. She balances training with piano lessons and vocal coaching, fitting everything into available slots throughout the day. "We can do a lot in 24 hours if we're having fun," she said, insisting she doesn't feel overloaded despite the heavy commitments.

She also revealed she hasn't been seeing her friend Freen much lately, suspecting Freen is intensively rehearsing for her own concert. Regarding an upcoming surprise for Freen's birthday on Saturday, Becky confirmed she already has a gift prepared.

Beyond her entertainment career and fitness goals, Becky updated her legal situation. She remains in an ongoing court battle with her former company over unpaid compensation of approximately 20 million baht. She stressed that she has not received a single baht and believes she deserves payment for her work. Despite the legal struggle, she's determined to continue fighting for justice while moving forward with her fresh start.

Model Says She Was Fired Over Gender Identity Without Prior Disclosure

A transgender model was sent home from a clothing photoshoot on August 4 after the brand owner objected to her gender identity, despite no such requirement being mentioned during hiring or preliminary communications.

Model Says She Was Fired Over Gender Identity Without Prior Disclosure
5 Aug Khaosod

A transgender model identified as Owen has recounted how she was hired for a routine lifestyle clothing photo shoot booked on short notice. During all preliminary communications via chat—including the shoot date, time, and location—no conditions regarding gender identity were disclosed. When she arrived at the shoot on August 4, everything proceeded normally until crew members approached her after she had changed into clothes for the session. They told her, "Are you transgender? The brand owner isn't okay with it. You need to go home." Owen said she was shocked and asked the team to negotiate with the brand owner, since she had already traveled to the location and was ready to start. The team declined, saying the brand owner would not budge, though one crew member later offered to personally top up a low compensation package that fell well short of her standard rate.

Owen explained that she typically posts a profile card to modeling recruitment groups with basic information like her name, measurements, and contact details. The client then contacts her through LINE to finalize details, and this job booking proceeded smoothly with no inquiries about gender. She noted that this was her second or third such incident, though previous cases were less severe and resulted in negotiated compromises rather than outright dismissal. She also clarified that for still photography shoots, gender identity should not be a relevant concern since no voice or verbal communication is involved. For video work requiring dialogue, she said she would disclose her status upfront to let the client decide.

Owen called on brands and recruiters to explicitly state any gender-identity requirements or other specific conditions in their job postings so models can make informed decisions before applying.

Actress Admits Past Stubbornness, Credits Boss's Tough Love
5 Aug Khaosod

Actress Udom Taweeporn acknowledged that she had been stubborn and reckless in the past, and credited all of Boss Nuttawat Isakraisil's scolding as important lessons that helped her mature. Meanwhile, Meena Rina clarified that she was not acting as a mediator, but was ready to accept mistakes and improve herself. The pair appeared together at the launch event for the series "Under Her Rules" today (August 5, 2025) at the Deva Pavilion in CentralWorld shopping center, where Udom spoke openly about how her boss's warnings had been accurate and shaped her personal growth.

When asked if her boss had noticed her improvement, Udom explained that given her age and relative newness to the entertainment industry, she and her boss had experienced ups and downs—moments of defiance and being led astray—but whenever he scolded her, she listened and adjusted. She reflected that she and her boss have known each other for ten years and that his words, though sometimes hurtful, had made her grow significantly. Meena emphasized that while she talks more often with Udom, she does not mediate between them; rather, when issues arise, they all acknowledge responsibility and work to improve, and things naturally resolve.

Regarding her acting debut in "Under Her Rules," Udom expressed excitement and gratitude for the opportunity, noting she had studied acting with several teachers before joining the project. She admitted some regret at discovering the acting world only at age thirty, when most actors enter as children, but she is grateful to now play a leading role. Meena, who has prior acting experience, praised Udom's natural talent despite her lack of previous acting work and encouraged audiences to follow the series. Both expressed hope that they will become a celebrated on-screen pair for their agency and contribute meaningfully to the organization's success. The series "Under Her Rules" premieres on October 17 at 8 p.m. on the iQIYI and IQ.com apps.

BDMS Launches WellEra Wellness City Model as New Growth Engine

Bangkok Dusit Medical Services is launching WellEra, a wellness city prototype opening in 2029, to capitalize on Thailand's booming health-focused tourism sector, which has grown into the world's 7th largest wellness economy.

BDMS Launches WellEra Wellness City Model as New Growth Engine
5 Aug Khaosod

BDMS is championing health-focused tourism as a driver of Thailand's wellness economy, which now ranks 7th globally in growth. The company is advancing the WellEra megaproject, a prototype wellness city launching in 2029. Titiporn Nookong, assistant to the chief executive officer for real estate development and WellEra project manager at Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (BDMS), spoke at the "Matichon Exclusive Meeting: New Tourism New Economy" seminar held at The Crystal Box, Kasikornbank Tower, 19th floor.

Global travel trends are shifting from leisure-focused vacations to the pursuit of health and quality of life, making the "Wellness Economy" a rapidly growing new economic engine. Over the past year, Thailand's wellness economy expanded 10.1%, wellness tourism grew 36.4%, wellness real estate development increased 22.9%, and spa services grew 18%, elevating Thailand to 7th place globally in wellness economy growth. This reflects the potential to strengthen tourism and create added economic value.

Post-COVID-19, consumer behavior has changed markedly. Travelers no longer seek only beautiful destinations but places that improve health, enable rest and physical recovery, and support quality long-term living. The world is shifting from "Lifespan"—living longer—to "Healthspan"—living longer in good health. Thailand has an average life expectancy of 75.3 years but a healthy lifespan of only 65.8 years, leaving a gap of nearly 10 years. All sectors must work together to close this gap so people not only live longer but enjoy good quality of life throughout their years.

Countries like Singapore, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates leverage their own strengths to advance the wellness industry. Thailand enjoys competitive advantages including natural resources, Thai cuisine, hospitality, traditional Thai medicine, and an internationally recognized healthcare system—assets that can be integrated to elevate the country from a "Tourism Destination" to a "Better Living Destination."

Titiporn stated that with this vision, BDMS developed WellEra under the concept of "Everyday Wellness Ecosystem for Everyone," making health care part of daily life rather than just treating illness. The project applies the 6S Framework—Sleep, Strong, Soul, Smart, Social, and Span—combined with 6S+ Surrounding, emphasizing air, water, light, sound, and temperature quality. Development follows WELL Platinum, Fitwel 3 Star, and LEED Gold building standards.

WellEra will comprise a Wellness Clinic, Lifestyle Mall, Urban Wellness Retreat, and Branded Residences. The health clinic will focus on preventive care with service packages priced for broad public access, ensuring wellness services are not limited to high-income earners. The company also plans to develop exercise trails connecting Lumpini Park and establish health centers for easier public access to health promotion services.

Titiporn stressed that positioning Thailand as a health economy hub requires elevating the entire workforce—from tour guides to entrepreneurs to service providers—not just medical personnel.

Thailand Foreign Tourist Numbers Drop 3.19% in First Half of 2025

Thailand Foreign Tourist Numbers Drop 3.19% in First Half of 2025
5 Aug Khaosod

Tourism and Sports Minister Surasakdi Panjcharoenvarkul disclosed that foreign tourist arrivals from January 1 to August 1, 2025 totaled 18 million, representing a 3.19 percent decline compared to the same period in 2024. The top five source markets are China, Malaysia, India, Russia, and South Korea. Recent weeks have experienced a slowdown from nearby markets due to reports of unrest in southern border provinces and reduced flight capacity on Indian routes. Overall, Thailand is seeing declining international arrivals from both regional and European long-haul markets. The drop in tourists corresponds with hotel booking rates, which the Thai Hotels Association chairman noted stood at 53 percent in July 2025, lower than July 2024. The association attributes the decline to entering the low season combined with Middle East tensions, which have dampened travel demand. Industry operators are calling on the government during the second half of 2025 to implement multiple support measures, particularly domestic tourism stimulus initiatives to boost revenue and increase economic circulation. These include increasing government conferences and events, adding flights, reviewing visa-free policies, reducing energy costs, cutting government fees, and providing tax relief. Industry leaders also support the Tourism Ministry's plans to consult the Finance Ministry about using borrowed funds for domestic tourism promotion projects, particularly the revised "Thai Travel Thai Plus" program combining government and private spending, which they hope to launch in September and run through October before the peak season. Thai tourism serves as a critical economic engine generating foreign income, but currently faces headwinds from multiple internal and external factors. The private sector's proposals merit serious consideration, and stakeholders hope the government will implement stimulus measures and support, especially during this second half of the year.

Thai Party Leaders Deny Secret Coalition Talks

Thai party leaders from three opposition groups denied rumors of secret coalition negotiations on Tuesday, calling reports of a potential government realignment unfounded speculation.

Thai Party Leaders Deny Secret Coalition Talks
5 Aug Khaosod

Rumors have swirled and political speculation has run rampant about a potential "secret deal" to flip the government coalition, from the "green-red" formula to the more radical "red-green-orange" arrangement, leaving many questioning whether a new power-brokering mode is truly underway. On Tuesday last week, the entire picture reversed when leaders from the orange, green, and red parties gave interviews on the same day without prior coordination, all delivering the same core message: there are no negotiations and no deal as reported. Itthim Prithet firmly emphasized that the People's Party continues its full role as opposition, with no invitations for talks with any faction as rumored, and will push ahead with rigorous scrutiny of the government since allowing it to remain in office only compounds economic hardship, inequality, and corruption. Uko Thammanus moved quickly to quash the "Monaco deal" narrative, confirming that his overseas trip was purely personal family time, with no meetings with anyone—not with the orange party, the red party, or even Thaksin—and restating that all reports are mere rumor and fabrication, not fact. Though Thai politics holds no certainties and coalitions can shift if accidents or new variables emerge, everything must be measured against hard facts, not rumors or speculation. When orange, green, and red leaders simultaneously denied the reports, they significantly dampened the shock wave from the "secret deal" coverage. At minimum, the blue party should breathe easier, freed from worry about a coalition flip that might have distracted from its work. The government can now focus on weathering the gathering storm of economic trouble, political friction, exam fraud, parliamentary disputes, and internal rifts within the blue party itself—challenges that loom far larger than any "secret deal" rumor.

Shop Owner Defends Self in Ex-Wife Business Dispute

Shop Owner Defends Self in Ex-Wife Business Dispute
5 Aug Khaosod

Pawin, owner of Pan Pon, broke his silence on August 5, 2569, explaining the origins of his dispute with his ex-wife and clarifying his side of the story after previously choosing to remain silent to avoid escalation. Pawin recounted that they lived together for approximately eight years and had a child together, with relationship problems beginning when he discovered his ex-wife secretly chatting with his friend after they met through a mobile game. He said he caught this happening about three to four times and repeatedly told her the behavior was disrespectful, but the situation eventually caused problems with his friend as well.

After his ex-wife went to Bangkok to study design, Pawin initially lost access to her Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook accounts, though he later regained access through an iPad and found she was still communicating with his friend. When he confronted the friend, the friend admitted to having feelings for his ex-wife, leading to a serious argument. Pawin told his ex-wife he wanted a divorce, but she later returned, apologized, and asked to reconcile, which he agreed to. However, he sensed her commitment was insincere and eventually they did divorce.

During the separation, they agreed to split their two businesses: Pawin would continue the traditional Lanna clothing business (Jrit Thai), while his ex-wife would handle the fashion clothing line and illustration work. A condominium purchase also became involved—his ex-wife wanted him to take out a mortgage on a Bangkok condo, but when divorce proceedings began, his family objected. To ensure he could bring their child back to live with him in Phrae province, Pawin agreed to the mortgage, ultimately becoming the borrower while his ex-wife lived in the condo.

About a year after Pawin took over Jrit Thai, he began a new relationship, and his ex-wife accessed his chat messages about it, causing her displeasure. She then changed the passwords to the business accounts and sales channels, cutting off his access. Pawin noted there were pending customer orders that had already been partially completed and paid for, so he decided to create a new shop initially called "Jrit Thai 2." When his ex-wife saw this action, she became upset and allegedly began accusing him of copying designs and misusing AI-generated images.
