On July 23, 2569, singer Cha Nongphani Mahadthai held a 100-day merit-making ceremony for her late father Pradis Mahadthai at her home in Sawaeng Ha District, Ang Thong Province. The event was simple and intimate, attended by close family and devoted fans, with emphasis on Buddhist rituals and merit-making for ancestors. Cha explained that her father had appeared in her dream only once after she complained to his photograph that he visited someone else in a dream instead of her. In the dream, her father asked if she had made merit that day and said he could not eat anymore before waking up. She noted that her mother still grieves daily after 40 years together, and that while Cha herself does not gamble, monks at the ceremony whispered lottery numbers—21 monks attended though only 20 were invited. Cha also revealed ongoing merit-making projects, including serving as major patron for a three-day robing ceremony and planning to donate an ambulance to Sawaeng Ha Hospital, the hospital where she was born.

Officials Uncover Exam Score Rigging Scheme Affecting Nearly 6,000

Authorities uncovered a scheme where 11 officials altered exam scores for nearly 6,000 failed candidates in a local government recruitment test, with investigations suggesting collaboration between university staff and examination committee

Officials Uncover Exam Score Rigging Scheme Affecting Nearly 6,000
23 Jul Khaosod

On July 23, Asapon Sannathrirat, a Phumi Jai Thai party member representing Sisaket and chair of parliament's anti-corruption committee, reported that investigations have revealed 11 officials were involved in altering exam scores for 5,960 people who failed the local government employee recruitment test. The anti-corruption commission's figure does not match the 5,924 candidates announced publicly by the local government examination committee. The scheme allegedly involved collaboration between Srinakharinwirot University staff, who were tasked with verifying scores, and officials at the examination committee. Investigators are pursuing the case within a compressed 10-month timeline instead of the standard two years. Asapon stated that the 5,960 candidates who received altered scores are considered complicit in the wrongdoing, but those who come forward to the anti-corruption commission with useful information may request witness immunity. Officials revealed that senior exam committee administrators ordered one of three suspects and a university staff member to change failing scores to passing ones via messaging apps, and the committee requested protective measures for all three suspects due to fears of retaliation. The investigation has uncovered high-level ministry director involvement and is examining whether senior permanent secretaries or politicians were connected to the scheme. The anti-corruption commission explained the extended timeline involves three months for evidence collection, one month for data processing, and six months for defendants to respond to charges.

7-Eleven Urges Thais to Protect Planet by Refusing Plastic Straws
23 Jul Khaosod

7-Eleven, the 24-hour convenience store committed to environmental sustainability, is advancing its "7 Go Green" policy through the campaign "Heal the Planet, Heal the Heart 24/7 at 7-Eleven." The initiative encourages consumers to reduce single-use plastic consumption by simply declining plastic straws and instead using alternative lids or drinking directly from containers at both in-store and 7-Eleven delivery service options via 7App.

The world currently faces a climate crisis, while Thailand struggles with urban waste overflow due to inadequate source-based waste separation systems and insufficient incentives to shift away from disposable consumption patterns.

According to Beyond Plastics, a coalition of environmental policy experts and grassroots activists at Bennington College in the United States, most plastic straws are designed for single use and discarded within minutes. Plastic straws rank among the top 10 most common plastic waste items found in oceans, and their small size and light weight make them easily become litter, potentially clogging drainage systems, polluting water sources, and persisting in the environment for hundreds or thousands of years.

7-Eleven invites consumers to protect the environment through simple behavioral changes—merely declining plastic straws when purchasing beverages that do not require them. The chain now offers reusable lids for both hot and cold drinks across All Café, All Select, Gulp, 7Select, and Kudsan (at participating locations). Customers ordering through 7-Eleven Delivery on 7App can simply check a box to decline straws, allowing everyone to contribute to environmental conservation.

Transport Ministry Opens Vehicle Data Check for State Welfare Card
23 Jul Khaosod

The Department of Land Transport is expediting public access to check eligibility and appeal for 2025 state welfare card benefits in line with government and transport ministry policy to ensure all citizens have fair and equal access to benefits. Officials have been strictly instructed not to collect any processing fees, and those with outstanding vehicle taxes are temporarily excused from payment during this period to reduce public burden.

According to Land Transport Director-General Sarpong Phaiduryapong, from July 17–23, 2025, a total of 101,838 people submitted requests to verify vehicle ownership to appeal for welfare card benefits. The requests covered 159,425 vehicles: 135,259 motorcycles, 23,581 cars, and 585 other vehicles. The most common reason cited was vehicles exceeding the age limit, followed by decommissioned vehicles, lost vehicles, transferred vehicles, seized vehicles, and cases of identity fraud in vehicle purchases. The department will expedite verification and coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure fair, transparent, and swift benefit eligibility decisions.

The director-general emphasized that the department is fully committed to ensuring citizens receive fair treatment according to transport ministry and government policy. All staff are ready to assist elderly citizens and those filing appeals. No fees whatsoever will be charged for the eligibility verification process. Those with outstanding vehicle taxes due to reasons such as long-term non-use are not required to pay at this stage but must submit a written appeal statement with their signature to officials as evidence for the appeal process.

Citizens wishing to verify their eligibility may visit the Department of Land Transport, Bangkok Metropolitan Transport Office regional offices, or any provincial transport office nationwide, or contact the Land Transport hotline at 1584.

Officials Race to Finalize Local Exam Fraud Findings

Officials are rushing to finalize corrections to a local government employee exam marred by fraud involving 270,000 test-takers, with the Central Civil Service Commission set to issue corrected results within today or tomorrow.

Officials Race to Finalize Local Exam Fraud Findings
23 Jul Khaosod

On July 23, Nirat Pongsitthithawer, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry and acting director-general of the Department of Local Administration, briefed reporters after meeting Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at Government House. He explained that discussions centered on fraud discovered in the local government employee examination, involving the Central Civil Service Commission's (CCSC) announcement procedures. The CCSC chair signed off on the decision during a meeting on July 17.

When asked why the matter needed to return to a meeting after the CCSC had already voted, Nirat explained that according to protocol, the CCSC initially certifies examination scores. When errors are found, the CCSC must vote to rescind its original decision and then vote to certify the corrected scores. Verification was completed on July 17 but had not been brought to a meeting. "This is the straightforward way to do it, respecting the rights of all test-takers as much as possible," he said.

After the meeting concludes, the CCSC must issue a proclamation signed by the chair with an attached roster of names, all stamped to verify the data matches the original examination and verification date with no alterations. When asked if the delayed process poses legal obstacles, Nirat denied it, citing the massive scale of the operation involving 270,000 test-takers. He said officials will rush to complete the task within today or tomorrow to prevent errors.

Asked whether the action aims to prevent lawsuit filings against the Administrative Court, Nirat stated the department respects and protects rights and hopes to prevent litigation. "If we make a straightforward announcement and stand confident in our work, I believe no one will file a suit," he said. Multiple agencies—including the Department of Local Administration, the company contracting with Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University, IT-savvy police, and the National Anti-Corruption Commission—have verified the errors to minimize mistakes. Regarding enforcement authority, Nirat said the CCSC will pursue legal action against those who submitted false information to the meeting. He declined to name specific individuals or agencies at this stage, noting that damage on this scale demands accountability. Criminal charges are already underway, with police and anti-corruption officials now involved due to the fraud against the government.

Police Arrest Money Launderer in Drug Cartel Crackdown

Police arrested a 27-year-old money launderer from Chiang Rai who operated shell bank accounts for the "Ball Khao Wised" drug trafficking network, part of an ongoing crackdown that has seized over 100 million baht in suspected drug proceeds

Police Arrest Money Launderer in Drug Cartel Crackdown
23 Jul Khaosod

Drug suppression police have continued their crackdown on the international drug trafficking network "Ball Khao Wised," arresting another member of a money laundering operation who was ranked as a priority suspect by the Royal Thai Police. On July 23, 2025, Police Lieutenant General Pathanasak Buphasawan ordered officers to arrest 27-year-old Kittisak (surname withheld) from Chiang Rai under arrest warrant number 103/2568, issued February 10, 2025, on charges of conspiracy to launder money. He was apprehended at a residence in Rim Kok Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chiang Rai.

The arrest follows Operation "Takedown Mafia Yan Rok," during which police dismantled the "Ball Khao Wised" drug trafficking network and seized assets valued at over 100 million baht believed to be proceeds of drug trafficking. Investigators discovered that the network used "mule accounts"—shell bank accounts—to receive drug proceeds before withdrawing cash and transferring funds to associates to disguise the money as legitimate income or investments.

Investigators also found that most cash withdrawals by the drug operation occurred in northern border areas, making it easier to smuggle money across to neighboring countries. After gathering sufficient evidence, authorities obtained court approval for additional arrest warrants. Police determined that Kittisak was one of the mule account holders used by the "Ball Khao Wised" network and was ranked 208th on the Royal Thai Police's priority fugitive list. He was hiding in Chiang Rai when arrested.

During questioning, Kittisak denied knowledge of criminal activity, claiming he had been paid thousands of baht per account to open them to support his family, and was unaware the accounts would be used for illegal purposes. Investigators remain skeptical and have transferred him to the Investigation Division for further legal proceedings.

Rights Group Condemns Vigilante Assault on Article 112 Suspect

A Bangkok man with psychiatric history was beaten by self-described vigilantes over alleged monarchy-critical social media posts, then faced a lèse-majesté complaint at the police station, according to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights.

Rights Group Condemns Vigilante Assault on Article 112 Suspect
23 Jul Khaosod

BANGKOK — A 42-year-old man with a psychiatric history was allegedly attacked by a self-described vigilante group after posting social media content critical of the Thai monarchy, then faced a lèse-majesté complaint under Article 112 of the Criminal Code, according to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR).

TLHR said the man, identified under the pseudonym "Thanit," was attacked on the evening of 22 July after members of a group calling itself "Kong Ruen Narok" (Hell Barracks) tracked him down at his residence in Bangkok's Don Mueang district.

The group had reportedly begun posting messages about searching for Thanit on 20 July, claiming it would locate him within 24 hours. According to TLHR, the group accused him of posting videos and messages on social media that referred to the monarchy.

Video clips circulating online appear to show dozens of people surrounding Thanit outside his residence. TLHR said the footage showed members of the group physically assaulting him, including repeatedly slapping him, kicking him, stomping on his head and body, and striking him with knees and elbows. The group's actions allegedly caused visible injuries, including bruising and damage to his glasses.

The group later took Thanit by pickup truck to Tao Poon Police Station, where a lèse-majesté complaint had already been filed against him on 21 July over Facebook Reels allegedly containing remarks about King Vajiralongkorn.

TLHR said police had not issued a summons or sought an arrest warrant for Thanit before the group brought him to the station. Members of the group reportedly remained in the area outside the police station afterward.

Police later examined and seized two of Thanit's mobile phones before any charges had been formally filed, according to TLHR. The rights group said police records stated that Thanit consented to the seizure and allowed officers to access data on the devices.

The phones were reportedly seized as evidence in connection with the Article 112 complaint, which was filed after an individual alleged that content posted through Facebook Reels contained remarks considered defamatory toward the monarch.

Lawyers from TLHR later accompanied Thanit to Don Mueang Police Station, where he filed a complaint against those allegedly involved in the assault. They also requested that police send him for a medical examination.

When lawyers met Thanit at Don Mueang Police Station late on 22 July, TLHR said he had bruises across his body, a swollen lip and head pain. The following morning, he was admitted to hospital after complaining of severe chest pain and was placed under emergency treatment.

TLHR said Thanit has received psychiatric treatment since 2007. He was released from prison in 2024 and had since stopped taking medication. The group also said he is the primary caregiver for his mother, who has Alzheimer's disease.

The incident has raised renewed concerns over the actions of self-described vigilante groups.
