Subdistrict Chief Arrested for Extorting Staff Over Contract Renewals

On September 17, 2024, officers from the National Anti-Corruption Commission and the Department of Special Investigation, working with the provincial Anti-Corruption Commission office in Sisaket, arrested Yasapond, 65, chief administrator of Nong Mee Subdistrict Administration Organization in Ratsai District, Sisaket Province, on an arrest warrant issued September 16 for abuse of authority and extortion.
The case stems from complaints by temporary and contractual staff at the subdistrict office. An investigation found that in early August 2024, Yasapond called a meeting of approximately 25 employees and announced their contracts would expire in September. He then stated that those wishing to renew their contracts must pay a renewal fee.
When employees met with him individually, Yasapond specified the amounts: 10,000 baht for those with less than three years' service, and 30,000 baht for those with three or more years. Affected employees collected evidence, including video and audio recordings of negotiations, before filing a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Commission.
After arrest, Yasapond was taken in for questioning. He denied all charges throughout the interrogation and was handed over to investigators for further legal proceedings.
