Thai Badminton Star's Doping Test Confirmed, Must Appeal
Thai badminton player Pichayamol Opasnipat's doping test has been confirmed positive for furosemide, a banned diuretic, disqualifying her from the 2026 Asian Games and leaving her to pursue an appeal.
Thai national badminton player Pichayamol Opasnipat, known as Ping, was temporarily suspended after testing positive for the banned substance furosemide, which disqualified her from competing at the 2026 Asian Games. She has been awaiting the results of her B-sample test, submitted on September 24, 2024.
Sports Minister Surasak Panchcharoenvorakul announced that the B-sample results have been confirmed and match the A-sample findings, verifying that the prohibited substance was indeed present in Pichayamol's system. The substance is classified as a cosmetic aid—specifically a diuretic—which many believe should not affect badminton athletes in a sport with no weight divisions. However, WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) rules apply uniformly to all athletes regardless of sport or gender.
The minister stated that disciplinary sanctions will follow. He suggested the substance may have been unknowingly ingested through medications or cosmetic products that did not clearly list the banned component on their labels. Pichayamol will now need to file an appeal to contest the findings.
