Thai Government Holds Candle-Lighting Ceremony for Buddhist Lent
Thai government officials led a candle-lighting ceremony marking the start of Buddhist Lent 2026 at a Bangkok temple, with Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak Thongsri representing the lay congregation in the traditional Phansa observance.
The Office of the Prime Minister held a candle-lighting ceremony (Thian Phansa) on the occasion of Asahna Bucha Day and the beginning of Buddhist Lent for 2026, presided over by Phra Dhammavachirachon (Chum Punyachai), abbot of Wat Benchamabophit Dusit Wanaram and Regional Head Monk for Zone 17, with Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak Thongsri representing the lay congregation. The ceremony took place recently at Wat Benchamabophit Dusit Wanaram in Bangkok's Dusit District. Officials from multiple government agencies, state enterprises, and financial institutions attended, including Yupa Thaveewattanakitboworn, Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister.
During the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak presided over the lighting of incense and candles as offerings to the Triple Gem and placed candles before the royal portrait, then paid respect to the presiding monk. Ten monks chanted the Buddhist scriptures, after which the deputy prime minister made a dedication of Phansa candles while officials presented supplies to support the temple. Participants then offered Thai desserts and alms to the monks, received blessings, and sprinkled lustral water for auspiciousness.
The Phansa candle-lighting ceremony is an important Buddhist tradition reflecting reverence for Buddhism and supporting the monastic community during the three-month retreat period, when monks intensively study and practice the Dharma and Vinaya. This year's ceremony demonstrates the government's commitment to preserving Buddhism and Thai cultural traditions, while encouraging public officials to help safeguard the nation's distinctive customs and heritage for future generations.
