Thai Meteorological Department Warns of Heavy Rain, Hail, Strong Winds
The Thai Meteorological Department issued a warning of volatile weather, heavy rain, hail and strong winds affecting upper Thailand from October 6 to 7, with another round expected from October 9 to 13. It urged the public to prepare for possible flash floods, strong seas and to stay safe outdoors.
The Thai Meteorological Department announced on October 6, 2026 that upper Thailand would experience volatile weather from October 6 to 7, with thunderstorms, strong gusty winds, hail and heavy to very heavy rain in some areas. The northern, central regions including Bangkok and vicinity, the eastern region and the upper southern region were forecast to be affected on October 6, while the northeastern region would see less rain. On October 7 the western northern and central areas and the southern region were expected to encounter similar conditions. The statement attributed the weather to a high‑pressure system or cold air mass from China extending over northern, northeastern and upper central Thailand, combined with easterly and southeasterly winds bringing moisture from the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand, while the southwest monsoon continued to cover the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. The department urged the public to guard against hazards from thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy and accumulated rain that could cause flash floods and runoff, especially in hilly areas near watercourses and low‑lying zones, and to avoid open spaces, large trees and weak billboards. Sea conditions in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand were forecast to strengthen, with waves exceeding two metres in thunderstorm areas, advising mariners to check routes and proceed with caution. Another round of increased rainfall, including heavy to very heavy rain in places, was predicted for October 9‑13 over the eastern, central, Bangkok vicinity and southern regions, and the public was told to monitor forecasts closely and plan travel and activities carefully. The department provided contact details for further information and said the next bulletin would be issued later that day at 17:00.
