Thailand Issues Heavy Rain, Hail Warning for Oct 9-13
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a third weather warning for heavy to very heavy rain, strong winds and hail affecting Thailand from October 9 to 13. Bangkok and its vicinity are expected to bear the brunt for two full days, while other regions face impacts on specific dates. The public is advised to take precautions against flash floods, rough seas and to stay updated through official channels.
The Thai Meteorological Department announced on October 8, 2026, that from October 9 to 13 the country will experience unstable weather, including thunderstorms, strong gusts, hail and heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas. The impacts will vary by region and date:
- October 9: Lower Northeastern, Eastern and Southern regions. - October 10: Lower Northern, Lower Northeastern, Central region including Bangkok and vicinity, Eastern and Southern regions. - October 11: Lower Northern, Central region including Bangkok and vicinity, Eastern and Southern regions. - October 12: Southern region only. - October 13: Southern region only.
The unsettled weather is caused by a high-pressure system or cold air mass from China extending over upper Thailand, combined with a monsoon trough moving across the upper South while the southwest monsoon continues to cover the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.
The department advises the public to beware of dangers from thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy rain and accumulated rainfall, which could trigger flash floods and overflowing forest streams, especially in hilly areas near waterways and low-lying zones prone to standing water. People should avoid open spaces, large trees and weak billboards.
For the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, waves may exceed two metres during thunderstorms; mariners are urged to check routes, navigate with caution and avoid sailing in thunderstorm areas.
The public is urged to plan activities and travel carefully during this period and to follow updates from the Meteorological Department via its website http://www.tmd.go.th or the phone numbers 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182, available 24 hours a day. The announcement was made at 05:00 on October 8, 2026, with a follow‑up bulletin scheduled for 17:00 the same day.
