Thailand's police civil service committee will meet Wednesday to appoint a new national police chief starting October 1, with General Samran Nualma emerging as the frontrunner due to his strong investigative background and political backing

Thai Police Chief Selection Set for Wednesday
19 Jul Khaosod

Unless a last-minute reversal occurs, Prime Minister Anuthon Chanthawirotkul will convene the police civil service committee on Wednesday, July 22, to appoint a new police chief set to take office on October 1.

Four deputy police commanders meet the criteria to compete for the position: General Nirandorn Luemsri, General Thatchai Pitaneelabut, General Samran Nualma, and General Itthiphol Ajchariyapradist.

As the selection process neared its conclusion, the race reportedly narrowed to General Nirandorn, the most senior candidate, and General Samran, who possesses strong investigative credentials and backing from multiple quarters. However, as the final decision approached, General Samran emerged as the sole frontrunner.

The selection criteria require consideration of both seniority and expertise—not seniority alone, but a blend of experience and competence. Military and police circles have begun discussing what qualifies a police leader, increasingly moving away from the traditional emphasis on criminal investigation expertise, which has long been the hallmark of policing.

Investigation and suppression of crime remain the heart of police work and should be a defining strength. This aspect particularly strengthens General Samran's candidacy. He has advanced through diverse assignments—from hotel management to investigation, suppression operations, inspection, traffic, and security work—culminating in extensive anti-drug operations. He stands an excellent chance of selection and appears to have already "secured the position."

The government's choice of the new police chief must also consider political backing. During this blue-government administration, an era of conservative political dominance, General Samran's selection aligns well, as he has long enjoyed the trust of this political faction.

The Phum Jai Thai-led government's decision on the new police chief selection should be straightforward. At Wednesday's committee meeting, there is no need to speculate whom Prime Minister Anuthon will propose for consideration.

General Samran meets all requirements, having progressed through every level of police work with recent achievements in major cases, including arrests of drug syndicates, cross-border gangs, the Thao Thip gang linked to Chinese triads, nominee business networks, and white-collar criminal groups. As commonly stated, the police organization needs a complete leader, especially one with genuine expertise in investigation and suppression. This makes General Samran an ideal choice.

Wednesday's decision should come as no surprise: General Samran Nualma's appointment appears certain.

Thailand's 2025 Welfare Card Program Announces 9.51 Million Approved Applicants
19 Jul Khaosod

The Ministry of Finance announced the results of the 2025 State Welfare Card Program on July 17 after opening new registration and verification between June 4-21. The committee reviewing applications found that 9.51 million people qualified out of a total of 18.82 million applicants. The approved recipients comprised three groups: 12.70 million existing cardholders, 740,000 people without cards identified through community development databases and the electronic family booklet system, and 5.38 million additional individuals discovered by the Interior Ministry during the registration period. Over 9.1 million applicants did not meet the qualification criteria and were rejected—approximately half of all applicants—leaving only the net figures announced. The stricter and more detailed evaluation criteria were implemented according to the Finance Minister's policy to ensure assistance reaches only those genuinely poor and in need. After results were announced, many people who previously received welfare cards but failed this time felt disappointed, with some even crying upon hearing the results. Those who qualified appeared happy and satisfied. However, those who did not qualify for the 2025 State Welfare Card Program can request a review between July 17-31 through four announced channels. Those who qualify—including existing cardholders—can begin using their benefits starting August 1. New applicants must first verify their identity through the Pao Tang application or one of five registration centers before they can use benefits starting October 1. Those requesting a review must contact the verification unit to correct their information by August 16 and go through the verification process again. The hope is that relevant agencies will exercise fair judgment based on actual living conditions according to established criteria, without being overly strict or lenient.

Wife Hires Private Investigator to Catch Cheating Husband
19 Jul Khaosod

A woman identified as Khun Benja spoke to reporters on July 19 about discovering her husband's affair with a high-ranking official who uses her position to manipulate him. The wife hired private investigator Boy to track her husband and caught him meeting the other woman in a van parked beside a roadside shrine. Benja expressed shock, saying her 4-year-old child will suffer from this family breakdown, and criticized the couple for showing no respect or shame. She plans to file a disciplinary complaint against the other woman and pursue full legal action with her lawyer.

Investigator Boy explained the case was difficult because both the husband and his lover are prominent figures in a small, tight-knit community. His team had to disguise themselves as graduate students researching local history to avoid suspicion. They eventually gathered solid evidence that Benja has now submitted to Boy's office. She is preparing to file a disciplinary complaint and consult with her legal team led by Attorney Hongsa to proceed with formal legal action.

Craving Ice? Doctor Warns It May Signal Iron Deficiency Anemia

Compulsive ice-chewing, medically known as pagophagia, may signal iron deficiency anemia rather than a harmless habit, according to a physician who notes the craving often disappears once iron levels are restored through proper treatment.

Craving Ice? Doctor Warns It May Signal Iron Deficiency Anemia
19 Jul Khaosod

A doctor warns that intense and persistent cravings to chew ice may not simply be a personal preference, but rather a medical condition. During hot weather, many people enjoy cold drinks with ice, and some habitually chew the leftover ice in their glass. However, Dr. Wu Chi-ing, a physician and health influencer, reveals that such compulsive ice-chewing behavior may actually reflect hidden health problems.

The condition is known medically as pagophagia, a form of pica (eating non-food items), and it may signal iron deficiency anemia. While ice-chewing may appear to be merely a personal habit, clinical experience shows that patients with this condition often have surprisingly high levels of iron deficiency when tested.

Why does iron deficiency cause ice-chewing cravings? Although there is no definitive scientific mechanism, the most widely accepted explanation is that iron is essential for brain function. When the body lacks iron, alertness and concentration decline, causing fatigue, drowsiness, and weakness. The intense cold sensation from chewing ice may temporarily stimulate the brain, providing a brief sense of refreshment and alertness.

The doctor notes that many patients find their ice-chewing urges disappear once iron levels are restored to normal through treatment, often surprising even the patients themselves with this change.

If you suspect iron deficiency, get tested before taking supplements. Dr. Wu Chi-ing recommends against self-treating with iron supplements without professional diagnosis. Anemia has multiple causes, and taking iron without addressing the underlying reason may be ineffective. It is necessary to identify the root cause: whether it stems from abnormal blood loss, insufficient dietary iron intake, or chronic gastrointestinal bleeding. Taking iron without proper diagnosis may mask the underlying disease and delay treatment.

Blood tests provide quick answers. A blood test measuring hemoglobin levels and iron storage in the body can provide rapid answers. Once diagnosis is confirmed, the doctor will determine the appropriate form and duration of iron supplementation, which is the safest approach.

Dr. Wu Chi-ing concludes that warning signals from the body often hide in small daily behaviors. While most people who chew ice may simply enjoy the sensation, in some cases this behavior may be the body's way of signaling iron deficiency and the need for medical evaluation.

Ancient Coffin Found at Bangkok Temple Identified as Founder's Ancestor

Ancient Coffin Found at Bangkok Temple Identified as Founder's Ancestor
19 Jul Khaosod

Wat Saket has clarified that a coffin discovered beneath the Limpaphon Viharn belonged to the great-grandmother of the chapel's founding family, who died in 1951. Her descendants have received the remains and are preparing funeral rites, with the ashes to be kept in the original location.

The deteriorated red wooden coffin, roughly 155 years old, was found during excavation work at Wat Saket, the royal temple in Bangkok. Initial inspection revealed female skeletal remains believed to have been there for at least 50 years. The coffin also contained a stainless steel tray and four coins dated 1957. On July 19, 2026, the temple released a statement regarding the discovery.

The viharn was constructed in 1971 by the Limpaphon family. In 2025, the temple committee decided to undertake renovations due to structural deterioration, strengthening the foundation and raising the structure to improve the landscape and increase usable space. Work began in April 2026. On July 16, 2026, during excavation, the construction company discovered a concrete structure resembling a lime pit beneath the viharn, behind the main Buddha image. Further investigation revealed a coffin containing skeletal remains inside.

After consulting with the chapel's descendants, temple officials learned the remains belonged to the great-grandmother, Khun Yai Thuat Foong, who died in 1951. Her ashes had been placed beneath the viharn at a later date, consistent with forensic examination confirming female skeletal remains. The temple coordinated with the descendants and police to retrieve the remains for proper funeral rites at Wat Saket, after which the ashes will be returned to the Limpaphon Viharn.

Opposition Demands Transparency in Narathiwat MP Shooting Case

Opposition leaders demand transparency in the investigation of a Narathiwat MP's shooting, citing state personnel involvement and concerns that unclear handling undermines public confidence needed for southern peace.

Opposition Demands Transparency in Narathiwat MP Shooting Case
19 Jul Khaosod

The field visit by opposition leader Natthapon Ruangpanya and Rangsiman Rom, chair of parliament's legal affairs committee, to follow up on the shooting of Narathiwat MP Kamlasak Liwamaung is more than a show of support for a violence victim. It signals that this case has transcended ordinary crime to become a major political, security, and state credibility issue. The heart of the investigation does not rest solely on apprehending the gunman, but on uncovering the true masterminds and motives. State personnel, weapons, and vehicles are known to be involved, yet the case lacks clear public explanation. The opposition has therefore directed its demands at Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the Interior Minister, calling for transparent clarification of the case's progress, since growing ambiguity undermines public confidence. Public confidence is the most critical factor in achieving lasting southern peace; if citizens believe their representatives have been denied justice and the state cannot hold commanders accountable, they will struggle to trust the judicial process or cooperate with authorities in resolving conflict. Rangsiman has raised concerns over non-prosecution orders for certain suspects, weapon destruction procedures, and the collection of two million phone records daily—issues that reveal problems extending beyond this single case to encompass transparency, state power use, and the rule of law. If the government seeks to build lasting peace, it must convince the public that the law applies equally to all, whether ordinary citizens, officials, or the powerful. Solving the assassination case of MP Kamlasak by reaching the true masterminds represents the starting point for restoring public confidence in the state and the first genuine step toward resolving the southern conflict.

July 19, 2026 – Police received a report that three teenagers on a motorcycle committed a food theft at a corner shop near the intersection to Wat Hoo Raem School, Moo 3, Tung Tamsao Subdistrict, Hadyai District, Songkhla Province, early in the morning. Security camera footage from the shop captured the entire incident, showing three teenagers arriving on a black-and-red Honda Wave motorcycle. Store owner Sawat Prathumwan, 67, was alone preparing his shop when the group rode past, then circled back. One teenager jumped off the bike and seized the opportunity while the owner was distracted, grabbing ten boxes of rice—including khao mok, khao man, and khao neow pla kem—worth over 200 baht that were ready for sale. The thief ran back to the motorcycle and sped away. Sawat tried to chase them but could not catch up, and the group of teenagers jeered mockingly at him as they escaped. Sawat has since filed a complaint with Tung Tamsao Police Station. The shop is located only 200 meters from the community police post, yet these teenagers showed no fear whatsoever.
