Thai Tekball Eyes Medal Hopes at Asian Games
Thailand's tekball team departs for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan next week as medal favorites, ranked first in Asia but facing stiff competition from Japan, Iraq, India, Myanmar and Indonesia.
Thailand's tekball team is pleased to be viewed as a medal contender at the Asian Games, and is working to adapt to new rule formats before departing for Japan. The Thai national tekball team is competing in the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya 2026, scheduled for September 17-20, 2026, in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
On September 11, the team held an open training session at the Sports Science Centre of the Sports Authority of Thailand in Bangkok, allowing media to watch final preparations before departing on September 14. Head coach Rewat Phabchompu stated that athletes have undergone continuous preparation for months and are now ready for competition, despite some rule changes requiring slight adjustments. The athletes are working to understand and become familiar with the new formats, which are new for Thailand but also new for other nations. He expressed confidence that the team can compete with all countries.
When asked how he felt about Thai fans viewing tekball as a medal hope at this Asian Games, Phabchompu said: "I'm pleased that we can be a medal hope to bring home gold for Thai fans. Our tekball athletes are ranked number one in Asia globally, so we are considered favorites this time. However, we cannot overlook our competitors. We must watch out for host nation Japan, Iraq with consistent strong results, India which is making a comeback with good performances, and within Southeast Asia, Myanmar and Indonesia which are also performing well."
