Thai Tennis Hopeful for Medals at Asian Games in Japan
Thai tennis officials express confidence the nation can win medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, citing strong recent performances by top-ranked players including Lalana Dharareedi and Mananchanok Sawanggaew, who have competed at Grand
Suchai Phornchaiysakdum, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage, expressed optimism that the Thai tennis team could win medals at the 20th Asian Games in Japan, with competition scheduled from September 27 to October 3, 2026. He noted that Thai players have been performing well in preparation, particularly top-ranked players Lalana Dharareedi and Mananchanok Sawanggaew, both in the world's top 100, who have gained recognition at Grand Slam tournaments including Wimbledon 2026 and the US Open 2026.
Thailand's number one player Kssidisn Samrej recently reached his first ATP Challenger 75 final, finishing as runner-up in the International Challenger in Zhangjiajie, China on September 6. Meanwhile, doubles specialist Nattapat Itsoro, ranked 95 in the world, has won multiple titles and runner-up finishes in professional doubles tournaments.
"We must acknowledge that Asian Games tennis is challenging due to top-level competition, but based on our recent performances, which serve as warm-up for the Japanese Games, combined with the physical and mental readiness of our players, we have reason to hope for medals," Suchai said.
At the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, the Thai tennis team won one bronze medal in the men's doubles category through Nattapat Itsoro and Maksimius Pharaphol Jones, a Thai-Australian player. The 20th Asian Games team includes Vichet Teepakakorn as team manager, with coaches Patchraphon Kamsaman and Dr. Thanagor Srichaiphan leading Thailand's tennis program.
