Thailand Activates National Disaster Insurance After Lamphun Flood
The Thai General Insurance Association, together with disaster prevention and insurance regulators, launched the national disaster insurance system after floods in Lamphun affected 225 households and a windstorm in Chiang Mai caused one death. They aim to expedite compensation, targeting the first death claim within seven days once documents are complete. The initiative marks the first real‑world use of Thailand’s national disaster insurance scheme.
On October 7, 2026, the Thai General Insurance Association joined the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC), provincial offices, and other agencies to explain assistance measures for people impacted by disasters in Lamphun and Chiang Mai and to support implementation of the National Disaster Insurance Project. Government units have declared disaster assistance zones according to the project's criteria, and homes with physical damage will receive compensation under the disaster insurance policy terms. Both provinces are among the first to apply the national disaster insurance system in practice. Association president Somprorn Sephtawilkul said Lamphun is one of the earliest areas to use the system after flash floods hit Pa Phlu subdistrict in Ban Hong district on October 5, 2026, affecting four villages and 225 households. He noted that Lamphun is the first province to qualify for project benefits and marks a key step in putting disaster insurance mechanisms to work for the public. The insurance sector has prepared claim reporting, verification, and payout processes to ensure swift compensation for eligible households. The Lamphun operation represents the first real‑world case of the national disaster insurance scheme and a vital mechanism for cooperation between government, regulators, and insurers to reduce economic impacts after disasters and help victims resume normal life quickly. The association added that a windstorm in Chiang Mai’s Galyani Vadhana district on October 5, 2026, around 1:00 p.m., killed a 54‑year‑old female farmer, making her the first death claim under the national disaster insurance project. The association is coordinating with relevant agencies to verify details and process the compensation claim according to the policy’s terms. Although normal claims take up to fifteen days, authorities have agreed to fast‑track this first case as a special measure to enable payment as soon as possible.
