The 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee opened formally on July 19, 2025, in Busan, South Korea, running through July 29, with representatives from 196 member states, UNESCO, advisory bodies, observers, and global stakeholders assembled to review major items under the World Heritage Convention, including new nominations, conservation status reviews, and international cooperation frameworks.

Thailand's delegation, headed by Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Choomklin, includes Dr. Ravivarn Phuridet, Permanent Secretary of the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, Bannaruks Soemtong, Secretary-General of the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, and officials from relevant agencies working to advance Thailand's key agenda item.

Thailand's primary focus is securing World Heritage Cultural status for Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahaviharn in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, with the World Heritage Committee scheduled to review the nomination between July 24–26, 2025. If approved, it would become Thailand's sixth cultural heritage site and ninth overall World Heritage property, reflecting international recognition of Thai cultural heritage.

The Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, serving as Thailand's focal point for the World Heritage Convention, has coordinated with the Ministry of Culture, Nakhon Si Thammarat province, and other agencies to prepare a comprehensive nomination including academic documentation, protection measures, management plans, and consultation with UNESCO's World Heritage Centre and advisory bodies to meet international standards.

Thailand's participation demonstrates the government's commitment to its World Heritage Convention obligations and the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry's role in advancing national heritage conservation policy. The government aims to secure successful registration of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahaviharn as a new World Heritage site, advancing cultural preservation alongside balanced, sustainable regional development for present and future generations.

Ancient Coffin Found at Bangkok Temple Identified as Founder's Ancestor

Ancient Coffin Found at Bangkok Temple Identified as Founder's Ancestor
19 Jul Khaosod

Wat Saket has clarified that a coffin discovered beneath the Limpaphon Viharn belonged to the great-grandmother of the chapel's founding family, who died in 1951. Her descendants have received the remains and are preparing funeral rites, with the ashes to be kept in the original location.

The deteriorated red wooden coffin, roughly 155 years old, was found during excavation work at Wat Saket, the royal temple in Bangkok. Initial inspection revealed female skeletal remains believed to have been there for at least 50 years. The coffin also contained a stainless steel tray and four coins dated 1957. On July 19, 2026, the temple released a statement regarding the discovery.

The viharn was constructed in 1971 by the Limpaphon family. In 2025, the temple committee decided to undertake renovations due to structural deterioration, strengthening the foundation and raising the structure to improve the landscape and increase usable space. Work began in April 2026. On July 16, 2026, during excavation, the construction company discovered a concrete structure resembling a lime pit beneath the viharn, behind the main Buddha image. Further investigation revealed a coffin containing skeletal remains inside.

After consulting with the chapel's descendants, temple officials learned the remains belonged to the great-grandmother, Khun Yai Thuat Foong, who died in 1951. Her ashes had been placed beneath the viharn at a later date, consistent with forensic examination confirming female skeletal remains. The temple coordinated with the descendants and police to retrieve the remains for proper funeral rites at Wat Saket, after which the ashes will be returned to the Limpaphon Viharn.

Opposition Demands Transparency in Narathiwat MP Shooting Case

Opposition leaders demand transparency in the investigation of a Narathiwat MP's shooting, citing state personnel involvement and concerns that unclear handling undermines public confidence needed for southern peace.

Opposition Demands Transparency in Narathiwat MP Shooting Case
19 Jul Khaosod

The field visit by opposition leader Natthapon Ruangpanya and Rangsiman Rom, chair of parliament's legal affairs committee, to follow up on the shooting of Narathiwat MP Kamlasak Liwamaung is more than a show of support for a violence victim. It signals that this case has transcended ordinary crime to become a major political, security, and state credibility issue. The heart of the investigation does not rest solely on apprehending the gunman, but on uncovering the true masterminds and motives. State personnel, weapons, and vehicles are known to be involved, yet the case lacks clear public explanation. The opposition has therefore directed its demands at Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the Interior Minister, calling for transparent clarification of the case's progress, since growing ambiguity undermines public confidence. Public confidence is the most critical factor in achieving lasting southern peace; if citizens believe their representatives have been denied justice and the state cannot hold commanders accountable, they will struggle to trust the judicial process or cooperate with authorities in resolving conflict. Rangsiman has raised concerns over non-prosecution orders for certain suspects, weapon destruction procedures, and the collection of two million phone records daily—issues that reveal problems extending beyond this single case to encompass transparency, state power use, and the rule of law. If the government seeks to build lasting peace, it must convince the public that the law applies equally to all, whether ordinary citizens, officials, or the powerful. Solving the assassination case of MP Kamlasak by reaching the true masterminds represents the starting point for restoring public confidence in the state and the first genuine step toward resolving the southern conflict.

July 19, 2026 – Police received a report that three teenagers on a motorcycle committed a food theft at a corner shop near the intersection to Wat Hoo Raem School, Moo 3, Tung Tamsao Subdistrict, Hadyai District, Songkhla Province, early in the morning. Security camera footage from the shop captured the entire incident, showing three teenagers arriving on a black-and-red Honda Wave motorcycle. Store owner Sawat Prathumwan, 67, was alone preparing his shop when the group rode past, then circled back. One teenager jumped off the bike and seized the opportunity while the owner was distracted, grabbing ten boxes of rice—including khao mok, khao man, and khao neow pla kem—worth over 200 baht that were ready for sale. The thief ran back to the motorcycle and sped away. Sawat tried to chase them but could not catch up, and the group of teenagers jeered mockingly at him as they escaped. Sawat has since filed a complaint with Tung Tamsao Police Station. The shop is located only 200 meters from the community police post, yet these teenagers showed no fear whatsoever.

Health Ministry Investigates Private Hospital Over Misdiagnosis Death
19 Jul Khaosod

On July 19, 2025, Dr. Phuwadej Surakot, director of the Department of Health Service Support (DHSS) under the Ministry of Public Health, announced that the DHSS has ordered officials from the Health Service Support Center 5 in Ratchaburi, working jointly with the Ratchaburi Provincial Health Office, to investigate a private hospital in the province. The investigation was prompted by a complaint alleging that a misdiagnosis resulted in delayed treatment, ultimately leading to the patient's death. Preliminary results are expected within seven days.

The investigation will examine whether the hospital followed legal standards in patient assessment and care management. Officials will review medical records and documents, and will take statements from both hospital staff and the deceased patient's family to ensure fairness to all parties. Preliminary findings are anticipated within the coming week.

Dr. Akam Pratisuwan, deputy director of the DHSS, stressed that all private medical facilities must prioritize patient safety. If a facility lacks specialists or necessary equipment, patients must be promptly referred to appropriate alternative facilities. Facilities found to fall below legal standards face penalties including imprisonment and fines under the Hospital Act, B.E. 2541, and professional ethics investigations will be forwarded to relevant professional councils.

Members of the public who have suffered harm from treatment at private hospitals or clinics can file complaints with the DHSS in Bangkok at 02 193 7002, or with their provincial health office if located outside Bangkok.

Over 500 Rohingya Feared Dead in Boat Capsizing

Over 500 Rohingya refugees are feared dead after two boats capsized off Myanmar's coast in late June and early July, according to UN and international migration agencies. The vessels were carrying passengers from refugee camps in Bangladesh

Over 500 Rohingya Feared Dead in Boat Capsizing
19 Jul Khaosod

More than 500 people, mostly Rohingya, are feared missing after two boats reportedly capsized off Myanmar, according to the UN refugee agency and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The vessels departed from Myanmar's Rakhine State in late June carrying passengers from Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. One boat carrying around 250 people lost contact shortly after departure, while another with approximately 280 passengers is believed to have sunk off Myanmar's Ayeyarwady coast on July 8. Though the incidents remain unconfirmed, UNHCR and IOM have warned of potentially devastating loss of life. If verified, this tragedy would bring the total missing or dead in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal this year to nearly 300. The agencies attribute the increased dangerous sea journeys to worsening conflict in Myanmar and limited opportunities for Rohingya refugees, and have called for stronger search and rescue efforts and action against human smuggling networks.

Four Chinese Tech Giants Plan 70 Billion Baht Thailand Investment
19 Jul Khaosod

Prime Minister Anupong Paojyothin announced that four leading Chinese technology companies have confirmed investment plans worth over 70 billion baht in Thailand this year, with the potential to create tens of thousands of new jobs and elevate Thai worker skills through knowledge transfer. Speaking during his trip from Chengdu to Beijing on July 19, the PM stated that Chinese investors, particularly in advanced technology sectors, have strong confidence in choosing Thailand as a manufacturing base and innovation hub. The investments will focus on precision technology industries including optical transceivers for data centers, semiconductors, and high-speed communication microchips, as well as expanding electric vehicle production capacity.

Anupong emphasized that the government prioritizes workforce skill development, with Thai workers to receive direct knowledge and technology transfer from these leading companies, adding long-term value to Thailand's industrial sector. He attributed Chinese investors' preference for Thailand to confidence in the country's infrastructure, transportation systems, and utilities that support regional manufacturing. Regarding government support, the PM highlighted the "Thailand FastPass" policy under the Board of Investment, which serves as a one-stop service to expedite approval and licensing processes.

Investors have praised the convenience and transparency of the system, particularly the absence of informal payments or multi-department complications, with the BOI acting as a single coordinating point. When asked about Thai business concerns to raise with the Chinese PM on July 20, Anupong noted that Thai businesses operating in China—mainly in agriculture, food, power generation, and hospitality—have reported good convenience from the Chinese government. The government is prepared to support and adjust conditions to meet investor needs, positioning Thailand as the region's future technology manufacturing hub.

Following the tragic Ladprao beer bar fire on the night of July 12 that killed 34 people and injured many others, the family of Maneeratna Bomglang, 38, a nursing assistant and one of the victims, held her cremation ceremony at Jatukham Machimaram Temple in Lamplaimat District, Buriram Province. Relatives, colleagues, and friends attended the final farewell. The Social Security Office presented 322,478 baht in compensation from the social security fund to support the family.

Sor Sombat Thaveeporn, the victim's husband, said he cannot accept the loss of his wife after they had married only one month ago and were planning to start a family together. All their plans have been destroyed by this unexpected tragedy.

Since the fire until the cremation day, the bar owner or any representative has not visited the family to express condolences or apologize. No sympathy wreaths were sent. Although reports suggested the bar's lawyers would offer 10,000 baht per victim as initial aid, the family has received no contact or assistance to date.

Sor Sombat has called on relevant government agencies to mediate negotiations on compensation and damages, and vowed to pursue justice for his wife relentlessly. "I will not let my wife's death be in vain," he stated.
