UN Investigation: Myanmar Military Using Paragliders and Drones to Kill Civilians

The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), established by the UN Human Rights Council, has released a report on August 12 revealing that Myanmar's military has increasingly used low-cost aircraft, including motorized paragliders, in escalating aerial attacks that have killed numerous civilians in the ongoing conflict with armed opposition groups. The Arakan Army, an ethnic armed organization in Rakhine State, reported that at least 20 civilians were killed and 22 others injured in Myanmar military airstrikes across three townships between August 1-11, with one attack involving up to eight aircraft lasting around one hour. The IIMM found serious human rights violations and a marked increase in aerial attacks in the months before elections in December and January, with attacks continuing unabated afterward. Investigators also documented arbitrary detention, torture, and deliberate sexual violence. Civilian casualties have increased due to the military's use of "double-tap" aerial strikes—a second attack following the initial strike—targeting rescue workers, emergency personnel assisting the injured, and fleeing civilians. Myanmar's military has increasingly deployed motorized paragliders, small helicopters, and drones to conduct low-level aerial attacks with unguided ordnance. In recent incidents in Sagaing Region in the northwest, paraglider pilots have used engine-cutoff tactics when approaching targets, allowing them to glide down silently and giving civilians little or no warning time to escape.

Thailand Resolves Hotel Licensing For Nearly 300 Phuket Properties
6d ago Khaosod

The Thai government has announced success in resolving hotel licensing issues affecting nearly 300 properties in Phuket, with plans to complete all outstanding cases by September this year. Deputy Government Spokesman Ploypailin Luksameelang revealed on August 12 that the Interior Ministry and related agencies have processed 392 hotel licensing applications pending since 2016, successfully issuing licenses to 275 properties so far. The remaining 117 cases are expected to be resolved by the end of September, representing substantial progress compared to the previous pace of only 30-40 licenses per year—over 75% of the backlog has been cleared in just two months of focused effort.

Beyond issuing licenses, the government has collected data on legal and regulatory barriers facing prospective hoteliers in Phuket and plans to amend laws and regulations to remove unnecessary obstacles fairly. The government prioritizes safety above all else and aims to bring all operators into the formal system without demanding bribes, while enforcing laws strictly. Several cases involving unlicensed operations are already under police investigation, with additional cases in the evidence-gathering phase for further prosecution. Officials have confirmed that no violations will be overlooked, and legal action will be taken decisively against all breaches.

Democrat Party Urges PM to Rethink Gun Control Law Approach

The Democrat Party is urging Prime Minister Anutin to reconsider his proposed gun control law, arguing it goes too far by banning home carry and restricting self-defense rights. The party recommends stricter vetting and licensing instead, w

Democrat Party Urges PM to Rethink Gun Control Law Approach
6d ago Khaosod

Democrat Party Deputy Spokesman Siripha Intravichiear has advised Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to take a reasoned approach to firearms control. The Prime Minister has proposed a law that would ban gun owners from carrying firearms outside their homes, even allowing shooting athletes to store weapons only at ranges and denying self-defense rights during burglaries.

"I want the Prime Minister to use wisdom in promoting the new firearms law carefully, controlling guns in a balanced and proportionate way, rather than acting on momentary emotions that undermine citizens' basic rights to self-defense and sporting opportunities," Siripha said.

Siripha recommended that the government establish strict background vetting systems, efficient licensing procedures, regular mental and physical health screening for gun owners, and serious enforcement against illegal firearms. She also proposed a zero-reset system requiring all current gun owners to re-register under the new framework with proper database records.

Warning against repeating past policy failures, Siripha cited the example of cannabis legalization, which was supposed to be controlled for medical purposes but has resulted in widespread unregulated sales. She noted that she personally tested purchasing cannabis at a shop without a doctor's prescription and found that vendors were not medical professionals, contrary to government claims.

PM Reiterates Gun Ban for MPs, Says Public Officials Must Set Example

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reiterated a ban on firearms for MPs and all public officials, emphasizing that Thailand's gun permits have expired and officials must serve as role models for the public.

PM Reiterates Gun Ban for MPs, Says Public Officials Must Set Example
12 Aug Khaosod

On August 12, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Interior Minister gave an interview at Sanam Luang regarding the Bhumjaithai party directive banning MPs from carrying guns. The PM stated that the order extends beyond just MPs—currently no one in Thailand can legally carry firearms because all gun permits in the country have expired. When asked about party members with accumulated weapons, he said that is their matter since they must declare such items in asset filings. He emphasized that anyone with a political position, whether running for office or holding any political role, faces legal consequences if found with firearms during searches. Such violations could be interpreted as ethical breaches, potentially jeopardizing their political future.

The PM stressed that public officials and representatives elected by the people must be role models and comply with the law. When asked whether the Cabinet's August 11 decision to cancel gun permits means no one can purchase firearms anymore, he confirmed this remains in effect until changed. He noted Thailand has roughly 10 million guns in circulation, which is unmanageable given a population of 70 million.

Regarding the controversy over his statement prohibiting shooting burglars in homes, the PM clarified there is no misunderstanding. His main point is to show that firearms serve no one well. Any shooting, regardless of circumstances, must be proven in court, not by the shooter or police alone. Anyone who shoots, even in self-defense, faces charges and must go to trial to prove justification—requiring bail, court appearances, and time.

"I may have communicated briefly, but my purpose is simple: avoid guns because they have never done good for those shot or those who shoot," the PM said. "Firearms users face court proceedings and legal consequences. I simply want to remind people. The law exists and has not changed. It is best to stay away from guns."

Does Frequent Teeth Picking Cause Cancer? Doctor Sets Record Straight

A 31-year-old man developed a facial tumor coinciding with frequent toothpick use, prompting discussion about cancer risk. Dr. Chattrapol clarified that teeth picking itself doesn't cause cancer, which is mainly linked to smoking, alcohol,

Does Frequent Teeth Picking Cause Cancer? Doctor Sets Record Straight
12 Aug Khaosod

A 31-year-old man suffered severe facial swelling on one side due to tooth decay and frequent use of toothpicks, which caused inflammation and developed into a large malignant tumor on the left side of his face. The incident sparked widespread discussion about whether teeth picking causes serious disease.

Dr. Chattrapol posted an educational video with the question: "Does picking teeth frequently cause cancer?!" While discussing the case, he revealed: "Doctors suspect it may be oral mucosal cancer that has spread to the tooth root area. As a cosmetic surgeon, I have encountered cases like this fairly often, but we still don't know the tissue biopsy results for this case. We don't yet know what type of cancer it is, whether it originated from the tooth or not, or from inside the mouth or elsewhere."

Dr. Chattrapol directly answered whether frequent teeth picking causes cancer: "What is certain is that I don't believe teeth picking itself is a direct cause of cancer. Oral cancer is mainly caused by alcohol, smoking, HPV virus, and poor dental and oral hygiene. These are clear causes that can lead to mucosal cancer in the mouth and spread elsewhere."

"However, there is no solid scientific evidence proving that teeth picking causes these cancers. It's likely just coincidence—one event happening at the same time as another. That's why we assume it's the cause. For example, this man's oral cancer may have been growing during the period when he happened to be picking his teeth frequently, so he thought teeth picking was the cause. We call this coincidence."

"Saying that teeth picking causes cancer creates panic and spreads incorrect information. I want to explain that the chances of oral cancer developing from teeth picking are extremely low. And if the cancer originated from the tooth itself, there is no evidence whatsoever that teeth picking causes this type of cancer."

Sending Support to the Young Patient, Urging Swift Treatment

"I would say this man's case is just coincidence. However, the tumor he has is quite large. I want to extend my support and urge him to seek treatment as soon as possible, because it is spreading fairly rapidly."
