Thailand Braces for Five Days of Heavy Rain
Thailand's Meteorological Department warns of five days of heavy to very heavy rain from September 23–27, with risks of flash flooding and rough seas affecting multiple regions as a strong low-pressure system moves across the country.
The Meteorological Department issued its third warning (219/2569) on September 22 for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Thailand from September 23–27, 2569. The northern, lower northeastern, central, Bangkok and vicinity, eastern, and southern regions will experience heavy rain in many areas with very heavy rainfall in some locations. Rain will begin first in the lower Northeast and East before affecting other regions. A strong low-pressure system from central Vietnam will move across the lower Northeast, East, Central Thailand, Bangkok and vicinity along a monsoon trough, while southwest monsoon winds over the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand intensify. The public is warned of dangers from heavy and continuous rainfall that may cause flash flooding and flash floods, particularly in foothill areas near waterways and low-lying areas. Avoid routes with recurring flood problems, especially low areas prone to brief flooding. Waves will strengthen in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, with the upper Gulf experiencing 2–3 meter waves and higher during thunderstorms, while the lower Gulf and upper Andaman see approximately 2 meter waves. Fishermen should exercise caution and avoid thunderstorm areas; small boats in the upper Gulf should stay ashore from September 23–27. Affected provinces include: September 23 — Very heavy rain: Saraek, Chanthaburi, Trat (East); Heavy rain: Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, Ubon Ratchathani (Northeast); Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram, Bangkok and vicinity (Central); Nakhon Nayok, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Saraek, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong (East); Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Ranong, Phang Nga (South). September 24 — Very heavy rain: Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin (Northeast); Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, Bangkok and vicinity (Central); Saraek, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri (East).
