Thailand Braces for Heavy Rain, Hail, Strong Winds Oct 9-15
Thailand’s Meteorological Department warns of unsettled weather from October 9 to 15, with more rain, strong winds, hail and lightning. Heavy to very heavy rain is possible, especially in the south, while sea waves may exceed two metres during thunderstorms. The public is advised to avoid open areas, large trees and weak billboards, and mariners should exercise caution.
The Thai Meteorological Department issued a weather outlook for October 9‑15, forecasting nationwide rain increase and unsettled conditions featuring thunderstorms, strong winds, hail and lightning, with heavy to very heavy rain in places. From October 12‑15, rain is expected to lessen in the upper regions while the south continues to see persistent, locally heavy downpours. This pattern is driven by a cold high‑pressure system from China moving over northern Thailand combined with a southern monsoon trough, while the southwest monsoon remains over the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. Wave heights are forecast around one metre, exceeding two metres in thunderstorm areas. Precautions include avoiding open spaces, large trees and insecure billboards, and urging mariners in the Gulf and Andaman to navigate with caution and steer clear of stormy seas. Regional details show a 40‑60% chance of thunderstorms in the north on Oct 10‑11, decreasing to 10‑30% later, with similar patterns for the northeast, central and eastern regions, and a 60‑70% chance of thunderstorms in the southern eastern coast with locally very heavy rain on Oct 10‑12.
