Thailand Issues Severe Weather Alert for Heavy Rain and Flooding
Thailand's Meteorological Department issued a severe weather alert through September 27 for heavy rain and flooding across most regions, with dangerous wave heights exceeding 3 meters in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand.
The Thai Meteorological Department issued its sixth warning on September 24, 2024, alerting to heavy and very heavy rainfall across Thailand until September 27. The affected regions include the North, Lower Northeast, Central Thailand, Bangkok and surrounding areas, East, and South, with some areas expecting extremely heavy falls.
The warning stems from a strong low-pressure system moving from Cambodia that will cover the Lower Northeast, Eastern, and Central regions along with a monsoon trough over Upper Thailand, while southwestern monsoon winds are intensifying over the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand. The public is urged to remain vigilant against dangers from accumulated rainfall that may cause flash flooding and flash floods, especially in foothill areas near waterways and low-lying zones. Travel through flood-prone routes should be avoided, particularly in low-lying areas where water may accumulate rapidly.
Wave heights in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand are forecast to increase, with upper areas reaching 2–3 meters and thunderstorm areas exceeding 3 meters. Fishermen are advised to navigate with caution and avoid thunderstorm areas. Small boats in the upper Gulf and upper Andaman Sea should remain ashore until September 27, 2024. The public is advised to plan activities and travel carefully during this period and monitor updates from the Thai Meteorological Department via its website at tmd.go.th or by calling 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182, available 24 hours daily. The next warning will be issued on September 24 at 5:00 p.m.
