Truck Runs Red Light, Nearly Hits Students
A six-wheeled truck ran a red light at high speed near Samut Songkhram Provincial Police intersection on September 17, nearly hitting motorcycles and students waiting at a crosswalk during morning rush hour.
A frightening incident occurred on September 17 at the Samut Songkhram Provincial Police intersection when a six-wheeled truck ran a red light at high speed, nearly crashing into motorcycles and a group of students who had just received a green signal. Traffic police officer Jirayut Wongbubpha, who was stationed at the intersection, immediately pursued and apprehended the driver.
Jirayut said the incident happened around 7:15 a.m. as he was preparing to facilitate traffic flow at a checkpoint near the jail. As he received the green light and began to move forward on his motorcycle, a six-wheeled truck suddenly ran the red light and cut in front of him at high speed. One motorcycle nearly collided with the truck but managed to brake and swerve away at the last moment.
Jirayut noted that the morning rush hour had heavy traffic, including motorcycles carrying students and parents dropping off children who were waiting at the light. A collision at that moment could have caused serious casualties. He pursued and pulled over the truck driver to check his license.
The driver initially claimed he saw the yellow light and rushed to accelerate but could not brake in time. The officer fined him the maximum 4,000 baht for running the red light, deeming it a deliberate violation and serious safety hazard. Jirayut warned drivers that upon seeing a yellow light, they should slow down and stop rather than speed up to beat the light. He also advised drivers with a green light to look both ways before proceeding for safety.
A local food vendor who witnessed the incident said the white truck running the red light was terrifying. She noted that accidents from red-light running occur frequently at this intersection, sometimes resulting in serious injuries. As someone who works there regularly, she felt frightened for all road users.
