Water Resources Department Launches National River and Canal Conservation Day

The Water Resources Department organized the National Day for Ku River and Canal Conservation and Development on September 18 at Pathumwan Conservation Park in Pathumwan District, Bangkok, under the theme "Flow with the Future: Sustaining Waterway Heritage, Building Sustainable Futures." Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin chaired the opening ceremony, with Water Resources Department Director Tirachan Boonsit and over 300 participants from government agencies, the private sector, and educational institutions in attendance.
Chomklin stated that the ministry and Water Resources Department conduct this annual conservation event, and this year's venue—Pathumwan Conservation Park—serves as new green lungs for the city. The park features wetland design and wastewater treatment systems that reflect nature-based solutions and provide multidimensional value across environmental, community lifestyle, volunteer conservation network, and public benefit dimensions.
The minister emphasized that water resource management requires coordinated effort across government agencies and public support. The ministry is committed to implementing strict enforcement against environmental offenders while building public awareness to encourage community participation in restoring waterways, reducing flood risks, and ensuring long-term water security.
Tirachan noted that the Water Resources Department and regional offices organized 31 conservation activities nationwide to raise public awareness of water resources and encourage community participation in restoring local water sources. These efforts aim to foster appreciation for clean water and collaborative stewardship that improves water drainage during monsoon seasons, reduces flooding risks, and strengthens long-term national water security.
Event activities included a forum titled "Flow Talk 2026: Reviving Waterways Through Future Innovation," exhibitions honoring Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and showcasing river and canal conservation efforts, and awareness-raising walks to promote public understanding of water resource value and protection.
September 20 was designated as National Day for Ku River and Canal Conservation and Development following the princess's 1994 inspection visit to Saen Saep Canal and communities along its 72-kilometer stretch from Bangkok to Chachoengsao Province.
