Woman Finds Glass Shards in Popular Gelato, Cuts Tongue

A woman suffered tongue injuries from glass shards in gelato at a mall shop, but felt the business showed insufficient accountability despite offering medical coverage and refunds.

Woman Finds Glass Shards in Popular Gelato, Cuts Tongue
19 Jul Khaosod

On July 19, a woman posted in the "We Are Consumers" Facebook group about her experience at a trendy Gelato shop. While eating the ice cream, she bit down on something hard and pulled out a glass shard that caused her tongue to bleed. She was most disappointed by the shop's lack of genuine accountability.

She had visited the shop the previous month and enjoyed the flavor so much she bought a second cup before the mall closed at 10 p.m. While eating the gelato and waiting in line for donuts at a nearby shop, she noticed the nuts felt unusually hard. When she commented on it, a friend pointed out that her tongue was bleeding. She spat out the contents and discovered a pea-sized glass fragment. She felt a scratching sensation in her throat, concerned that she had swallowed part of it.

The shop took the gelato and glass fragment back for inspection, preventing her from photographing evidence. They advised her to see a doctor and promised to cover medical costs and refund the gelato in cash. At the hospital, the doctor confirmed only minor cuts to her tongue and cheek. Because it was unclear if the glass was contaminated, the doctor recommended a tetanus shot.

After submitting her medical certificate and receipts, she asked about their responsibility plan. The shop said they would only cover medical expenses. She waited nearly a month before posting because she initially wanted to see how the shop would respond rather than making it a public issue.

She acknowledged her disappointment was severe at the time. While she expected them to refund her money and cover medical costs, she felt what was missing was genuine sincerity in communication and accountability. She believed the incident was serious enough that the owner or decision-maker should have personally apologized, explained how it happened, and outlined prevention measures for other customers—not just texted responses.

Many urged her to claim damages, but she said that was not the point. No amount of money could fairly compensate for what happened, and the real issue was the shop's failure to demonstrate true responsibility and care.

Employers Report Police Extortion Scheme Targeting Foreign Workers

Employers Report Police Extortion Scheme Targeting Foreign Workers
19 Jul Khaosod

Employers have exposed a pattern of extortion by officers claiming to represent Chiang Mai police, who demand cash payments from foreign workers despite valid work permits. After an incident on July 14 in which a 36-year-old Burmese elephant camp worker named Monthan was severely beaten and left abandoned by men posing as police, advocate Sangduean Chailoet, founder of Elephant Nature Park in Mae Taeng District, called for justice. The men stopped Monthan on a motorcycle, seized him and his vehicle, and left him in critical condition; he remains in a coma.

According to reports, the perpetrators are officers from Border Patrol Police Unit 33, who regularly conduct illegal checkpoints targeting foreign workers. The unit later announced an investigation and formal legal procedures against the officers involved. Business owners in Mae Rim District revealed that for months, groups posing as police have been conducting almost daily raids on villages, confiscating mobile phones, disabling CCTV cameras, and fabricating violations.

Despite foreign workers presenting complete and valid documentation, the fake officers invent pretexts for charges—such as claiming workers with agricultural permits are working outside their designated area when simply transporting crops. Workers are then extorted for thousands to tens of thousands of baht in cash to avoid prosecution, receiving no receipt. Some who refuse or lack funds are detained at a building behind a government office and forced to have their employers negotiate payment to secure release. These practices have caused widespread hardship for workers and employers alike.

Hospital Fires Doctor After Patient Dies From Missed Heart Attack

Hospital Fires Doctor After Patient Dies From Missed Heart Attack
19 Jul Khaosod

RATCHABURI — A private hospital in Ratchaburi has dismissed a senior physician after a 30-year-old man died of a heart attack hours after allegedly being diagnosed with a panic attack and denied an electrocardiogram (ECG) requested by his family.

The case drew widespread public attention after the victim's wife, teacher and influencer Benyaporn Phanphet, known online as "Kru Sai," shared her story on social media, claiming her husband's death could have been prevented had he received appropriate treatment.

According to Benyaporn, her husband sought treatment at San Camillo Hospital in Ban Pong district after experiencing severe pain radiating from his arm to his chest, accompanied by excessive sweating. He was reportedly referred between several departments before an orthopedic doctor suspected a heart condition and referred him to a general practitioner.

She alleged that despite the family's repeated requests for an ECG, the physician declined, saying the symptoms were more likely caused by stress or a panic attack. The family also offered to pay for additional tests or transfer him to another hospital but said their requests were refused.

After returning home, the man collapsed later that evening and died.

An autopsy later found that he had severe coronary artery disease involving two blocked arteries.

The family has filed a formal complaint, seeking an investigation into the medical treatment.

In its first statement issued on Saturday, the hospital suspended the physician, a doctor in his 70s who had worked at the hospital for more than a decade, pending an internal investigation and external reviews by the Medical Council of Thailand and independent experts.

On Sunday, the hospital issued a second statement announcing that the doctor had been dismissed with immediate effect.

The hospital said its internal fact-finding found that the physician had communicated with the patient and relatives using inappropriate and impolite language, violating hospital regulations requiring staff to treat patients respectfully. The conduct was also found to be inconsistent with the Medical Council's code of professional ethics.

The dismissal took effect on 19 July.

The hospital said it would continue to cooperate with ongoing investigations and provide assistance to the bereaved family, while expressing its deepest condolences and accepting public criticism and recommendations.

Nine-Year-Old Boy Injured After Fall Into Drainage Ditch
19 Jul Khaosod

Volunteers from the Po Tek Tung Foundation received an emergency call on July 19 at 5:21 p.m. reporting a child who had fallen into a drainage ditch and become impaled on a metal rod in his leg on Puthabucha Soi 49 in Bangkok's Thung Khru district. Rescue teams equipped with cutting tools and an ALS ambulance from the Aravata emergency system were dispatched immediately.

At the scene, a nine-year-old boy was found sitting on the concrete walkway with his right leg caught in the drainage channel between the walkway and a fence wall. A metal rod had penetrated approximately five centimeters into his right leg, causing severe pain and distress. Rescue personnel used jackhammers to expose the metal rod's position before carefully cutting it out with bolt cutters, taking approximately 20 minutes to complete the extraction while the frightened child cried out in pain. After the rod was removed, first aid was administered and the boy was rushed to IMH Thonburi Hospital by advanced life support ambulance.

The 49-year-old grandmother revealed she received a call informing her that her grandson was trapped by metal in a pipe and rescue efforts were underway. When she arrived, she found her grandson in this condition. Upon questioning, she learned that children had been playing in the area when a pushing incident occurred, causing him to fall and become impaled.
