Woman's Organ Donation Saves Five Lives After Motorcycle Crash
A 33-year-old mother from Phetchabun died from head injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash, and her family's decision to donate her organs saved five lives by providing two corneas, two kidneys, and a heart to waiting patients.
A major act of compassion unfolded in Phetchabun as a young mother's family decided to donate her organs after she suffered fatal injuries in a motorcycle crash. Bhakthima Khongkaraksa, 33, was riding her motorcycle on the evening of September 22 to buy milk for her seven-month-old baby when the rear tire blew out. Combined with wet road conditions from rain, the motorcycle skidded and she struck her head on the pavement, suffering severe injuries. Her boyfriend, who was riding behind her, sustained minor injuries.
Paramedics transported her to Wichian Buri Hospital, where doctors found significant brain bleeding and transferred her to Phetchabun Hospital for advanced care. Despite full medical treatment, she developed brain death, which is medically equivalent to death. When informed of her condition and the organ donation program, her mother, Jom Khongkaraksa, consulted with family members, who unanimously agreed to donate her organs to help other patients. Within ten minutes of their decision, medical staff confirmed her brain death.
Nursing Director Chamaiporn Sitong of Phetchabun Hospital's Organ Donation Center explained that the donated organs comprised two corneas, two kidneys, and a heart—enough to help five additional patients return to normal life. Jom expressed her belief that her daughter's spirit would recognize the family's good intentions and compassionate act, and that the merit would guide her to a better afterlife. The family asked forgiveness for allowing their daughter's organs to help others, but trusted in the spiritual benefit of their decision. The hospital presented a certificate of honor and funeral wreaths to the family in recognition of this major charitable act.
