Thailand Mandates GPS Tracking for Foreign Trucks Starting January 1

The Department of Land Transport is preparing to enforce GPS installation on all foreign commercial vehicles entering Thailand, effective January 1, 2025, to address concerns about neighboring countries' trucks operating illegally in the kingdom and to create fair competition for Thai transport operators. Department Director Sarapong Paituryapongse explained that Thailand is party to several international road transport agreements that benefit Thai carriers by facilitating cross-border operations and reducing logistics costs while strengthening their competitiveness. Member countries also gain benefits from commercial rights to operate transport services into Thailand through designated routes and border crossings, promoting mutual cross-border transport cooperation.

The Department of Land Transport has been monitoring international transport conditions and found that freight and passenger vehicles from member countries have increased significantly. In response, the department issued a proclamation requiring foreign transport vehicles operating in Thailand to install GPS data recorders to the same standards applied to Thai vehicles, effective January 1, 2025. The measure aims to elevate highway transport safety to international standards, improve monitoring and enforcement of designated routes, and regulate driver speed and working hours throughout their operations in Thailand.

"The Department of Land Transport is committed to supporting Thai transport operators while ensuring foreign vehicles strictly comply with Thai laws and regulations under the same safety standards," a department statement said. "This measure will build public confidence, reduce accidents, and serve as a key mechanism for sustainable growth in Thailand's land transport economy."
