Anutin Deploys Economic Diplomacy to Boost Thailand as ASEAN Hub
PM Anutin met with 76 foreign diplomats to pursue economic diplomacy aimed at repositioning Thailand as a trusted ASEAN hub through free trade agreements and strategic partnerships across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul met with 76 ambassadors, consuls, and heads of international organizations at Government House on September 4 as part of an active economic diplomacy strategy, not merely routine protocol. The meeting divided discussions into nine regional groups to strengthen bilateral relationships and tangible benefits. The government aims to restore Thailand's global visibility as an open, trustworthy country and ASEAN bridge amid volatile geopolitics, energy crises, and supply chain restructuring. ASEAN is the priority region, with Anutin having officially visited Laos, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia, with Philippines, Brunei, and Timor-Leste planned next. Thailand will coordinate closely with Singapore to maintain ASEAN presidency continuity for 2026–2027.
The government is using free trade agreements as tools to re-attract investors, accelerating deals with the EU, Canada, and South Korea while opening new markets through Peru, Sri Lanka, BIMSTEC, and ASEAN-Canada frameworks. These agreements position Thailand as a regional manufacturing and business hub for investors seeking broader ASEAN and Asian access. The government is also diversifying risk by engaging Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, South Asia, and Central Asia, leveraging Thailand's strengths in food, halal products, clean energy, healthcare, wellness, and logistics. In the Middle East, Thailand seeks a long-term food security partnership with energy, tourism, healthcare, and labor cooperation; Africa will operate under the Thailand-Africa Initiative linking politics, economy, development, and strategic cooperation. For China, Japan, South Korea, and East Asia, the focus is strategic technology, innovation, AI, new industries, and cybercrime prevention, with emphasis on quality investment that creates added value and prevents illicit capital.
