Thai sprinter Biew Phuripol Bunsorn set a new Asian record by running the men's 100-meter dash in 9.99 seconds at the summer athletics championship in the Czech Republic on August 1. This performance propels him to first place in the 2026 Asia Lead rankings, making him the first Asian athlete to break the 10-second barrier this year. Japan's Yuki Koike previously held the year's best Asian time at 10.06 seconds with a wind reading of +1.4 in May.

Worldwide, 48 male sprinters have run under 10 seconds in 2026, with Biew currently ranked 44th globally. This marks his second sub-10-second performance, following his 9.94-second effort in the qualifying round at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand on December 11. Notably, this is also his first sub-10-second run achieved outside Thailand.

Missing Woman May Be Linked to Serial Killer Case
4 Aug Khaosod

On August 4, 2025, Ms. Bulan Salajanes's brother filed a missing persons report at Bang Lamung Police Station in Chonburi, asking police to expedite the search and investigate possible links to an ongoing violent crime case. The family became alarmed after following news coverage of a suspect known as "Por" and discovering that bodies were found in areas near where Ms. Bulan had lived and traveled regularly, including Pattaya and Khao Chi Chumphon. Ms. Bulan, 35, normally lived in Pattaya and traveled regularly to her hometown in Chaiyaphum Province, maintaining contact with friends and a foreign boyfriend who supported her financially. However, she abruptly stopped communicating with everyone without explanation.

According to her brother, Ms. Bulan traveled frequently between Pattaya and Chaiyaphum, usually meeting her foreign boyfriend when in Pattaya. After she went missing, the family initially reported it in Ayutthaya Province where the brother lives, but was directed to file a report in Pattaya as the relevant jurisdiction. Preliminary investigation revealed that Ms. Bulan once stayed in a certain area and borrowed someone's phone to contact her boyfriend before leaving. The family noted that she later disappeared without further contact, which is unusual since she could normally borrow a phone if hers was lost.

Her brother posted her photo on social media the previous evening, attracting significant attention, but no credible sightings have been reported. Her phone number cannot be reached, and close friends confirm her disappearance is highly abnormal given the unusually long silence. Police are investigating her travel routes, reviewing CCTV footage, identifying persons of interest, and tracking her missing motorcycle. Authorities are coordinating with relevant agencies in Chonburi to search and determine her safety. At present, there is no confirmed evidence linking her disappearance to Por's case, though investigators are thoroughly examining all facts and suspicious details raised by the family.

Health Ministry Reviews Billion-Baht Budget Reserve Fund
4 Aug Khaosod

Health Minister Pattana Prompan announced on August 4 that he will review the National Health Security Office's (NHSO) budget allocation, which has been under scrutiny for how its 60 billion baht budget is distributed among service providers. During an NHSO board meeting, officials ordered an audit of gold card budget distribution, including a discretionary fund held for board consideration of unforeseen needs.

Pattana explained that discretionary funds arise when procurement negotiations result in savings below budget estimates. Over the past four to five months, he has proposed to the NHSO board that discretionary funds be accumulated to create a safety buffer for emergencies or crises that spike medicine prices, and potentially to support financially struggling hospitals.

"We want to gather these savings and let the full committee decide how to allocate them to service areas or use them as a financial safety net if emergencies arise or instability causes medicine prices to rise," Pattana said. "I've already proposed the policy, but implementation hasn't begun yet, though one board member suggested we start in the next fiscal year."

When asked if the reserve would specifically help hospitals facing cash shortages, Pattana confirmed it could be allocated that way depending on board priorities. He estimated the current discretionary fund at approximately several billion baht.

From everyday ideas to competition-ready innovations, the "Robot Playground Festival" gives Thai youth nationwide a platform to showcase creative thinking and explore technology, robotics, and artificial intelligence. Organized by the Thai Association of Robot Technology and Artificial Intelligence Teachers and the Thai Robot Teachers Club, with support from Panasonic Energy (Thailand), the festival celebrates student innovation.

Team SPIM-D from Phivatporn Institute Demonstration School won the Bigfoot Gundam Open category with a remotely operated robotic arm developed by 17-year-olds Chaiyapat Suwannarasmee and Nattadoan Sriratvatanakul. The team plans to evolve the project into a rescue robot capable of performing tasks in hazardous environments—including collapsed buildings and chemical leak sites—by adding thermal sensors, cameras, and 5G control systems.

Team KN3 from Kanjananutcharoen School won the Lite Beam Open competition with an autonomous line-following robot built by 18-year-old Pannakan Luengamornsakdi and 12-year-old Piraya Srisuksaibangtoey. The team hand-soldered circuits, adjusted resistances, and installed light-detection sensors—the robot's "brain" and "eyes"—and plans to develop an intelligent agricultural robot to monitor soil conditions, spray fertilizer, and transport harvests.

A mixed student team from Phivatporn Institute Demonstration School and Bangkok Christian College developed "Monk Assist," a robotic helper for monks that uses AI to identify food's nutritional value when inserted into the system, displaying health information for relatives and helping monks carry objects. The team aims to expand the concept into everyday and industrial carrying applications.

Team KIDS STEM-2 from Rungarun School, with members aged 8 and 9, created a "Smart Farm" equipped with moisture-detection sensors for automatic watering and AI-powered motion detection to identify and deter unwanted animals like birds, rats, and squirrels using a robotic cat replica and sound effects.

Panasonic Energy hopes the initiative will inspire Thai youth to pursue robotics, technology, and AI careers while demonstrating how innovation can drive sustainable social and environmental progress.

Opposition Leader Blasts Election Commission on Senate Case

Opposition Leader Blasts Election Commission on Senate Case
4 Aug Khaosod

On August 4, 2025, at Parliament, opposition coalition leaders led by Prasit Wacharisindu held an event titled "Two Years After the Senate Election: Deep Dive into Evidence in the Senate Special Election Case—How Much Can We Trust the ECT?" featuring witnesses and academics. Prasit identified five problematic ECT behaviors: (1) insufficiently rigorous regulations on Senate elections, including six regulations allowing candidates to use the same number for morning and afternoon voting, enabling ballot manipulation before election day; (2) inadequate vetting of candidates, with examples including candidates lacking qualifications or disqualified individuals like Kodiyah Songngam, who was reportedly an advisor to the Ang Thong governor during 2021-2023; (3) neglect of fraud prevention during the Senate election, especially at the national level; (4) suspicions of case suppression and the formation of a special subcommittee apparently intended to whitewash the matter; and (5) concerns about potential case dismissal citing insufficient evidence, when the ECT should refer the case to court if evidence suggests probable fraud occurred. Prasit emphasized the opposition's distrust of the ECT's impartiality, citing conflict-of-interest issues among some senators serving on vetting committees. He stated the opposition presented evidence publicly because they lack confidence the ECT will act fairly, and called for the case to be referred to court based on the 26th examination subcommittee's resolution regarding all 229 senators involved.

Thailand Discovers Rare Bat Species for First Time

Researchers in Thailand have discovered the Laotian Leaf-nosed Bat for the first time in the country within Sam Roi Yot forest in Bueng Kan Province, marking a significant finding in ongoing biodiversity surveys.

Thailand Discovers Rare Bat Species for First Time
4 Aug Khaosod

Thailand has discovered the Hipposideros rotalis (Laotian Leaf-nosed Bat) for the first time in the country, highlighting the ecological abundance of the Sam Roi Yot forest. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin stated that the government emphasizes continuous conservation and restoration of natural resources to preserve forest richness and national biodiversity. This discovery, made within Sam Roi Yot recreational forest in Bueng Kan Province, demonstrates the tangible results of these efforts.

According to Suchat, the discovery resulted from work by the Forest Research and Development Office under a vertebrate wildlife biodiversity study project in the Sam Roi Yot area, supported by the National Science, Research and Innovation Committee. Research teams surveyed the area from early 2025 and found this bat species in Thailand for the first time, though it was previously reported only in Laos.

The minister stated that this discovery reflects the ecological richness of the Sam Roi Yot forest ecosystem and provides valuable scientific information for studying national biodiversity. Although the species is classified as low-risk for extinction, it confirms that Thailand's forests retain significant potential for discovering species of scientific importance in the future.

"The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment prioritizes surveying and conserving new wildlife and plant species because they reflect the completeness of our nation's natural resources," Suchat said. "We will continue forest management alongside supporting research to maintain biodiversity and pass on abundant natural resources to the next generation."

The Forestry Department will strengthen conservation of the Sam Roi Yot forest area and continue supporting biodiversity research to create new knowledge and improve natural resource protection for the country.

Dream Wedding Funded by Debt Leaves Couple Eating Instant Noodles

A Malaysian man borrowed 310,000 baht for an elaborate dream wedding, only to find his marriage strained months later as the couple survives on instant noodles while repaying the debt.

Dream Wedding Funded by Debt Leaves Couple Eating Instant Noodles
4 Aug Khaosod

A Malaysian man is sharing a cautionary tale after borrowing 40,000 Malaysian ringgit (approximately 310,000 baht) to fund his dream wedding, only to face mounting debt that has strained his marriage in the months following the ceremony. On his wedding day, the groom wanted to give his bride a fairytale wedding, so he invested heavily in lavish floral decorations, an ornate dowry display, and rented a luxurious venue resembling a palace. The wedding photos were shared on social media and received widespread admiration, with many praising it as a storybook wedding.

However, behind the couple's smiles lay a hidden truth: the entire wedding was funded through a loan. The couple borrowed the money not for a house or car, but solely for one day of celebration, believing they needed to create a perfect event that met everyone's expectations. Just two months after the wedding, their life began to crumble. Nearly all their monthly income went toward loan repayments, forcing them to survive on instant noodles, not because they couldn't cook, but because they had almost no money left for other expenses. One day, his wife made a statement he will never forget: "If I'd known it would be like this, I would have preferred a small wedding and used the money to travel together instead."

The groom acknowledged he cannot argue with his wife's words. As time passed, the flower arch was dismantled, guests returned to their own lives, and the wedding photos that once received countless likes faded from social media feeds. The only thing that remained was the monthly burden of debt repayment. He posted a viral message on Threads: "The wedding lasts only one day, but the debt stays with you for years. Is it worth sacrificing the best years of your marriage to impress people who will barely remember your wedding?" The post sparked extensive online debate, with many netizens agreeing that financial stability may be more important than an extravagant wedding, while others argued that weddings should be planned within one's means without creating debt that impacts post-wedding life.
