Band Leader Apologizes for Monk Impersonation Performance

A band leader named Parinya and lead singer Withaya apologized to residents of Lamphun province and the Buddhist community on September 17 for a September 11 performance at an entertainment venue in Ko Kha district. During the show, a male performer dressed to resemble a monk, performed with religious songs, then removed his robe and underwear on stage. After the video was posted online, it drew widespread criticism for mocking and disrespecting monks and affecting public faith and respect.

The provincial religious affairs director ordered staff to file a complaint with Ko Kha police on September 14, alleging violations including religious defamation under Section 206 and 208 of the Penal Code for impersonating a monk, as well as Section 388 for indecent conduct. Parinya stated the performance was a mistake due to lack of judgment and was intended only for customer entertainment with no intent to mock or disrespect monks. He apologized to Lamphun residents and Buddhists and said future performances would avoid sensitive topics involving the nation and religion. He reported visiting the chief Buddhist chaplain of Lamphun province and the abbot of Phra Kaeo Don Tao Temple to pay respects and seek forgiveness.

Withaya also apologized, saying the unrehersed performance was improvised to entertain guests and used a tablecloth resembling robes from a distance, without intent to disrespect monks. The bar management and staff also issued a formal apology, stating they were unaware the performance would occur and did not intend to insult religious institutions. They pledged to implement stricter controls over future performances.
