Bangkok to Cap Transit Fares at 45 Baht from January 2027
Bangkok will cap all transit fares at 45 baht across its unified rail network starting January 2027, with passengers receiving refunds for any overpayment within three working days.
Bangkok authorities are coordinating with the Transport Ministry and related agencies to implement a unified fare cap scheme across the city's rail network starting 1 January 2027. Bangkok Deputy Governor Wisanu Sap-Somphon attended the first committee meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, where officials focused on coordinating data, managing infrastructure, and preparing systems for the new structure.
Under the scheme, passengers travelling between different rail lines will not be charged duplicate entry fees. The government will refund any fare exceeding 45 baht to passengers' cards or through the Pao Tang application within three working days. Payments will be accepted via EMV Contactless, credit cards, debit cards, and Mangmoom cards, while existing discounts for seniors, children, people with disabilities, and disadvantaged groups will remain available.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will work with the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand and Bangkok Thanakom Co. to transfer management of the Green and Gold lines, including assets, revenue, and liabilities. A memorandum of understanding is expected to be prepared for Cabinet approval by December 2026, with joint system testing planned before the official launch to ensure smooth operations.
