Cheap Eyelid Surgery Leaves Woman Nearly Blind After Botched Procedure
A Dublin woman nearly lost her sight after budget eyelid surgery in Germany left her with open wounds and incomplete eye closure, joining multiple patients who suffered serious complications from low-cost procedures abroad.
A woman has warned others after undergoing budget eyelid surgery based on online reviews, only to suffer open wounds and incomplete eye closure, nearly losing her sight and requiring four emergency room visits.
On September 24, eye surgeons in Britain issued warnings about complications from low-cost eyelid surgery after treating patients with open wounds, incomplete eye closure, scarring, and concerns about vision loss.
Nikita Morgan, a 31-year-old from Dublin, Ireland, decided to have eyelid surgery after watching online reviews because she could not afford the high costs in her home country. She chose to have the procedure done in Germany for 750 euros, or about 30,000 baht. Although she received local anesthesia, she experienced severe pain during surgery, describing it as feeling like her face was on fire and smelling burnt skin. She also flew home the same day despite medical advice against it.
Another case involved a woman over 40, known as Laura, who underwent the surgery and removed her own stitches after returning to England. The incision above her eye reopened, revealing raw tissue and becoming infected. She required four emergency room visits.
Eye specialists noted that excessive removal of eyelid skin can prevent the eye from closing properly, exposing it to the environment and causing serious, hard-to-correct complications. Doctors from the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society reported that many patients seeking overseas eyelid surgery develop incomplete eye closure, scarring, uneven eyes, and separated surgical incisions.
Surgeons advised those considering the procedure to carefully study the risks, treatment standards, and post-operative care before deciding. Over the past three years, eyelid surgery videos on social media platforms in Britain have accumulated nearly 150 million views, a five-fold increase from the previous three years.
