Commerce Ministry Unveils Four-Point Plan to Combat Durian Price Collapse

Thailand's Commerce Ministry is rolling out four measures to counter plummeting durian prices, including faster distribution, quality control, and value-added processing to move 300,000 tons of southern production before the season ends.

Commerce Ministry Unveils Four-Point Plan to Combat Durian Price Collapse
22 Jul Khaosod

The Department of Internal Trade is tackling falling durian prices in southern Thailand with four key measures to boost distribution of 300,000 tons of output. Director-General Withayakorn Maneenate outlined the strategy following a field inspection at Marakot market in Chumphon, working to execute Deputy Prime Minister Supachee Suthermpunthu's fruit management policy. Southern durian production is now over 50 percent into the season, with Chumphon province alone accounting for roughly 70 percent, or 243,000 tons.

The four-point action plan includes: (1) accelerating product distribution from farms to market by coordinating with the Department of Land Transport and ensuring compliance with the GMS Cross-Border Transport Facilitation Agreement, while encouraging more Thai trucks to purchase durian and connecting foreign buyers for continuous purchasing; (2) maintaining Thai durian quality through strict harvest standards, grading, and compliance with production benchmarks to build buyer confidence and protect the nation's durian brand; (3) promoting value-added processing through community enterprises and producers to create products such as fried durian and durian sweets, while linking market channels; and (4) intensifying marketing and communications to attract traders to Marakot market for expanded distribution.

Marakot market manager Thanet Samgtawon confirmed the facility is prepared to handle the southern durian influx as eastern region production winds down. Vendors at the market report that Chinese consumers remain highly interested in Thai durian, especially the golden pillow variety for its trusted quality and flavor, while the Sri Saket volcanic durian has earned recognition as a premium product among discerning buyers.

New Zealand teen released on bail after being arrested for alleged theft at Thai airportLegacyA New Zealand teenager has been reunited with his mother after spending six days in a Thai prison over an alleged theft at airport. The New Zealand mother, Natasha Rainger, recently told the Daily Mail she would do anything to secure the release of her 18 year old son, Loukas Rainger, who was arrested in Thailand during his first overseas holiday. Natasha maintained her son’s innocence, saying he had not intentionally taken another passenger’s property. “He didn’t maliciously steal it or intend to steal someone’s belongings. He didn’t think. He’s inexperienced, young,” she told Daily Mail. According to police, the incident occurred at Surat Thani International Airport on July 3 while passengers were passing through a security screening area. The CCTV footage showed Loukas taking a Swatch watch belonging to another traveller from a security tray. Photo via Lucas’s Instagram account Loukas was later arrested at Suvarnabhumi International Airport while preparing to fly home to New Zealand after police identified an arrest warrant linked to the case. He was subsequently transferred by train to Surat Thani for legal proceedings. Natasha told the Daily Mail that her son was handcuffed to a chair during the 12-hour journey. According to Natasha, Loukas told her he believed the watch had been left in the same security tray as his own belongings and that he picked it up by mistake. She said she sought assistance from the New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok after his arrest. According to Natasha, Loukas apologised to the watch’s owner and returned the item. Photo via Lucas’s Instagram account Natasha also claimed she was asked to pay US$1,000 (about 34,000 baht) in compensation, despite saying the watch was worth between US$80 and US$100 on the eBay marketplace. According to the Daily Mail, Loukas was released on 100,000 baht bail and reunited with his mother on July 22 after spending six days in custody. The media outlet reported that the teenager lost about 10 kilogrammes while detained and shaved his head in accordance with Thai prison regulations. Speaking to New Zealand news outlet Stuff, Natasha described the reunion as emotional. “I have never ever in my life been so happy to just see my son. I can’t stop looking at him.” Although he has been granted bail, the legal case is continuing. Loukas must remain in Thailand, report to police every two weeks and appear in court for a hearing scheduled in September. 22 Jul Khaosod

Narcotics suppression officers are continuing their crackdown on the Do Pa Phayom drug network after seizing a 1-kilogram gold bar worth more than 4 million baht that had been deposited at a gold shop in Surat Thani. In just four days of operations, authorities have seized assets totaling over 9 million baht.

On July 22, Deputy Police Commander Pattanasak Bupphasuwan ordered officers including Deputy Chief Pongsapat Chukaew and Region 6 Commander Anuson Thongsai to inspect and seize the gold bar, weighing 1 kilogram and valued at approximately 4,452,731 baht, from a gold shop in Mueang district, Surat Thani province.

The seizure follows an operation launched on July 17 under the codename "Cut the Silver Line, Crush the Do Pa Phayom Network Phase 1," in which officers raided three locations in Phatthalung province and confiscated 4,563,520 baht in cash.

Investigators then tracked the network's financial movements and discovered on July 20 that members had converted the criminal proceeds into gold bars and deposited them at a shop in Surat Thani province. Authorities seized the gold as assets related to serious drug trafficking offenses.

Investigations identified the gold as belonging to Khomchak, alias "Do," who faces six arrest warrants and is currently believed to be hiding in a neighboring country. He is wanted in connection with multiple serious crimes across Phatthalung, Chumphon, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Trang provinces, including attempted murder of officials, solicitation of murder, and drug trafficking conspiracies.

Authorities have handed the seized gold to the Public Prosecutor's Office Region 8 for further investigation and asset forfeiture proceedings under drug laws. The gold shop owner cooperated fully with the investigation.

Over the four-day operation, authorities have confiscated a total of 9,016,251 baht in assets from the Do Pa Phayom network, comprising 4,563,520 baht in cash and 4,452,731 baht in gold bars.

Entertainment Host Reveals Details of Water-Throwing Incident at Celebrity Wedding
22 Jul Khaosod

Entertainment host Boy interviewed hairstylist Saem Ratchada about the water-throwing incident at the wedding of celebrities Nadech and Yaya. Saem Ratchada admitted the incident was real and explained that she had repeatedly warned Jenny not to approach her, saying their friendship ended 10 years ago and had never been properly resolved. According to Boy's account, someone attempted to bring the two together twice during the Saturday event, but Saem Ratchada had already warned them to stop. When Jenny approached despite the warnings, Saem Ratchada threw water out of frustration, saying she had been clear about not wanting to reconcile at this time.

Boy summarized three main issues: Saem Ratchada's deep resentment toward Jenny, a 10-year-old wound that had never been properly addressed or cleared, and the involvement of third parties who may have fueled the conflict. Boy noted that the core issue is Saem Ratchada's desire for genuine sincerity rather than a simple apology, given that over 10 years there were many opportunities to resolve matters properly through other means. Saem Ratchada stated directly that actress Nana from the Angel Gang was involved as a mediator years ago, before the financial disputes between them occurred.

PM Anutin Presses Defamation Lawsuit Against iLaw Director
22 Jul Khaosod

On July 22, 2025, at Nong Nooch Garden in Chon Buri, Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Chaiyawongse gave an interview regarding his plan to file a defamation suit against Yingluck Achananon, director of iLaw, who accused nine Palang Pracharath members of involvement in a Senate impeachment case, including Anutin's name. Anutin stressed that under the law, any accusation must be backed by clear evidence and the case is still in the judicial process with no formal filing yet.

Anutin said that whoever Yingluck is, she cannot simply name people in a judicial ruling and cause them harm. He questioned the credibility of the witnesses cited in her report, noting that while everyone has the right to speak, they must take responsibility for what they say. When asked whether Yingluck had political motives, Anutin said he does not know her intentions but suggested she may be disappointed and fearful that Palang Pracharath is doing well.

Regarding a potential lawsuit scope, Anutin said the decision rests with Suphachai Jaisamutr, the party's legal representative, who was tasked by the party to pursue the case. He noted that such disputes have happened before, but this time there would be no settlement or mercy plea. Anutin emphasized that Yingluck, as an influencer with followers, must think before speaking. On the Senate impeachment case itself, Anutin said he has no involvement and therefore no concern, adding that the case predates his appointment as prime minister and he was in opposition for three to four months with no power to influence it.
