Ex-Police Officer Robbed in Georgia Seeks to Aid Missing Thai Tourist

A retired Thai civil servant robbed at knifepoint in Georgia shares his harrowing experience to help find missing tourist Hulun Solo, warning solo backpackers of safety risks and recommending coordination with Thai networks abroad.

Ex-Police Officer Robbed in Georgia Seeks to Aid Missing Thai Tourist
29 Jul Khaosod

On July 29, 2569, Chatchawal Kaylim, owner of V10 Garage and a well-known automotive influencer also known as "Big V10", presented Pornchai Sanafee, a retired civil servant from the Ministry of Industry and his close brother, who was robbed at knifepoint while solo backpacking in Georgia. Pornchai shared his experience as a cautionary tale and to potentially aid the search for missing tourist Hulun Solo.

Pornchai revealed that in 2565, he traveled alone starting from Turkey before flying to Georgia. On his first day, he was attacked by a criminal wielding a knife who attempted to rob him. During the struggle, the criminal fled with his mobile phone and camera. Unexpectedly, during the confrontation, Pornchai ended up with the criminal's phone. When he reported the incident to police and handed over the phone as evidence, officers arrested the perpetrator the next day. However, they could not recover his stolen belongings as the criminal refused to disclose their location, forcing Pornchai to accept the loss.

Pornchai noted that despite Georgia's reputation as a safe country, he encountered many impoverished people during his stay. Tourists who are careless risk becoming crime victims. After the incident, he faced further complications in the legal process. Police court dates conflicted with his travel plans, causing him to miss his flight. He was then placed on a travel ban despite being the victim, not the accused, forcing him to remain in Georgia for nearly a month while bearing all accommodation and living expenses.

Georgia has no Thai embassy, so Pornchai had to coordinate through the Royal Thai Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, which submitted documentation to Georgian authorities confirming his victim status and requesting removal of the travel ban. He received crucial assistance from Thai networks in Georgia, including restaurant owners, massage shop operators, and business people who helped coordinate with local authorities. With help from people in Thailand who contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Georgian authorities eventually lifted the ban, allowing him to return safely.

Pornchai stated that Hulun Solo's disappearance requires close coordination between Thai agencies and Georgian authorities, along with Thai expat networks in the country to search for clues. He warned that solo backpacking carries high risk, recommending travel in groups of at least two or with a buddy. He advised prospective travelers to research destination countries in advance, choose countries with Thai embassies, and if none exist, locate Thai communities or business networks beforehand. He also stressed the importance of informing a third party of travel plans for safety.

Woman Remanded in Fatal Teacher Shooting, Shows No Remorse
29 Jul Khaosod

A 33-year-old freelancer from Khon Kaen has been remanded in custody for the fatal shooting of Kru Biao, a 34-year-old learning center teacher from Kamphaeng Phet, who died from a single gunshot wound to the chest at a residential property in Khon Kaen.

On July 29, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., Pol. Col. Phakphum Detcharueangsilp, commanding officer of Ban Pet Police Station in Mueang Khon Kaen, ordered the suspect remanded in custody. She faces charges of murder and weapons violations related to carrying and firing a gun in public, with bail denied due to the serious nature of the offense. During the transport, police had to assist the suspect down the stairs, but she remained expressionless throughout.

When questioned by journalists, the suspect refused to answer verbally, instead shaking her head when asked if she wished to apologize to the victim's family. When asked if she had planned or intended to kill Kru Biao, she again shook her head.

Pol. Col. Phakphum stated that the suspect claims she was carrying a firearm and discovered used condoms, which angered her and led to a confrontation with the victim. She alleges they struggled over the gun until it discharged and struck the victim's chest. However, the sole witness—the victim's close female friend—contradicts this account, testifying that there was no argument or struggle before the suspect opened the door and fired, killing Kru Biao immediately.

"The suspect has the right to give her account, and we will ensure justice based on the evidence presented," Pol. Col. Phakphum said. "Witnesses must provide truthful testimony, or they risk charges of perjury."

Initially, investigators have filed three charges: murder and violations of the Firearms Act concerning carrying and firing a weapon in public. Additional charges for premeditation and restraint may follow depending on further investigation.

Myanmar Approves Death Penalty for Online Scam Gang Leaders

Myanmar's military-backed parliament approved the death penalty for online scam gang leaders who force or detain victims, the first law passed under its new government as the country grapples with a growing fraud industry during civil war.

Myanmar Approves Death Penalty for Online Scam Gang Leaders
29 Jul Khaosod

NAYPYIDAW — Myanmar's military-backed parliament has approved a law allowing the death penalty for people who detain or violently force victims to work in online scam centres.

Union Parliament Speaker Aung Lin Dwe announced during a live television broadcast on Tuesday that lawmakers had passed the Anti-Online Scam Bill following a joint session of the upper and lower houses in Naypyidaw.

MP Aye Chan said the final version retained provisions allowing capital punishment for those who detain victims or use violence to force them to carry out online fraud. Lawmakers made few changes to the draft during discussions between the two chambers.

The draft published in May prescribed prison sentences ranging from 10 years to life, as well as the death penalty, for anyone who uses violence, torture, unlawful detention or cruel treatment to compel another person to commit online scams.

The death penalty must be imposed when such abuse results in a victim's death, according to the legislation.

People convicted of operating online scam centres or carrying out cryptocurrency-related fraud may also face life imprisonment.

The legislation is the first passed by Myanmar's new military-backed government, led by President Min Aung Hlaing, as the country faces the rapid expansion of scam compounds during its continuing civil war.

Myanmar has become a major base for Southeast Asia's online fraud industry, including romance and cryptocurrency investment scams targeting victims around the world.

Although some workers enter the compounds voluntarily, many foreign nationals who have been repatriated say they were lured by fraudulent job offers or trafficked before being detained and forced to carry out scams.

The International Organization for Migration said trafficking into Asian scam centres is rising sharply, with victims from more than 80 countries subjected to threats, violence, sexual abuse and other forms of coercion.

Min Aung Hlaing has pledged to crack down on the industry amid mounting pressure from countries including China and the United States. However, rights groups and analysts have questioned the effectiveness of previous operations, with thousands of people reportedly still trapped in scam compounds near Myanmar's border with Thailand.

China has also imposed severe punishments on criminal groups connected to Myanmar's scam industry. In January, Chinese authorities executed 11 members of a crime syndicate linked to compounds in northern Myanmar after they were convicted of offences including fraud, unlawful detention and murder.

Kasetsart University management, led by Acting Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kongsak Thientharm, held discussions with Somsak Kittitharakul, chairman of the Krabi Provincial Administration Organization, at the Ratchasila Conference Room at Krabi Provincial Hall. The meeting was called to establish collaboration guidelines on education delivery, public land utilization in Thung Khuan Yao, Huai Yung subdistrict, Nueaklong District, and concrete development of the Andaman coastal area.

Thientharm outlined the university's KU Syntegration concept, which integrates knowledge and work across all disciplines to create added value and results. The approach emphasizes collaboration with the province, private sector, and communities for tangible area development, while applying research findings to real community needs for sustainable development. This supports lifelong learning and skill development programs for people of all ages.

The meeting brought together representatives from government agencies, educational institutions, and local government organizations to exchange ideas and establish guidelines for balanced development in economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The focus is on applying university knowledge, technology, and innovation to area development, with plans to sign a memorandum of understanding between Kasetsart University, Krabi Province, and the Krabi Provincial Administration Organization.

Following the meeting, university executives visited the Andaman Regional Research and Academic Service Center to discuss strategies for promoting education, research, and academic services supporting the region's strategic sectors: agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and tourism. This represents a significant step in integrating cooperation between educational institutions and government agencies to enhance the Andaman coastal zone's capacity, drive area-based development, create added value, improve residents' quality of life, and strengthen long-term coastal sustainability.

Election Commission Explains Why Two Amnatcharoen Senators Qualified

The Election Commission upheld two Amnatcharoen senators' qualifications after dismissing challenges that claimed they lacked proper business registration, finding their decades of market vendor experience met legal requirements.

Election Commission Explains Why Two Amnatcharoen Senators Qualified
29 Jul Khaosod

The Election Commission has released its decisions dismissing qualifications challenges against two Amnatcharoen senators: Daeng Kongma and Samphon Palasak, after activist Yiangcheepa Archannont of the Internet Law Project (iLaw) demanded transparency on the case. Both had been challenged for allegedly lacking qualifications to run in Category 10 (general business operators) due to operating without proper business registration documents. The Election Commission's ruling states that Daeng had worked selling pork at Ekacha Witchit market in Mueang district since 1997 and served as a market development committee member since 2004, meeting the ten-year experience requirement. Similarly, Samphon's twelve years selling chicken noodle soup qualified him under the law despite lacking formal business registration. The commission found sufficient witness testimony and community endorsements supporting both candidates' experience, and no government agency had formally notified the provincial election officials of any disqualifications. Therefore, the Election Commission dismissed both challenges, determining the candidates met legal requirements.
