At Parliament on July 11, 2025, Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, a Democrat Party list MP and party leader, addressed the visits by three former prime ministers from the Shinawatra family—Thaksin Shinawatra, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, and Yingluck Shinawatra—to meet with ASEAN leaders, questioning whether these trips carry political implications.

Nattapong stated that the Prime Minister should answer questions about this matter most directly. He noted that while communications have focused on the shrimp export problem with Malaysia, the government's response has been slow. Since shadow cabinet meetings, he warned that delays in resolving this issue would harm shrimp farmers, as infected ponds die entirely within one to two weeks.

When pressed on the political significance of the Shinawatra family's diplomatic activities, Nattapong said the public should judge whether there are political motives. He emphasized that any past or current politician conducting negotiations to benefit the country is doing something good. However, he stressed that the incumbent Prime Minister should act more actively and decisively while in office.

Nattapong also called for the Prime Minister to fulfill parliamentary responsibilities by answering urgent questions in live parliamentary sessions held on Thursdays, which he described as a basic duty of the office.

Regarding whether the Shinawatra family's movements threaten the government, Nattapong said it depends on whether citizens benefit from the activities. If they do, there should be no downsides. As the opposition, the focus should remain on whether the government, particularly the Prime Minister, acts quickly enough to solve problems for the people.

Thailand Launches 40-Baht Meal Program to Fight Rising Costs

Thailand's government launches a 40-baht meal program through 200,000 restaurants to ease living costs, with the Commerce Ministry providing subsidies to participating vendors.

Thailand Launches 40-Baht Meal Program to Fight Rising Costs
14h ago Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supachee Sutthammapant has announced the "Thai Helping Thai" rice dish project, offering meals at 40 baht per plate to address rising living costs. She acknowledged that while rice dishes and prepared foods have seen continuous price hikes, restaurants cannot simply lower prices due to multiple cost pressures beyond fuel expenses, including electricity bills, labor costs, rent, and other hidden expenses. The government must therefore be fair to business owners and consider their full cost structure, not just fuel prices alone.

To accelerate relief for wage earners and ordinary citizens, the Commerce Ministry is launching the "Thai Helping Thai" rice dish program as an extension of the broader "Thai Helping Thai Plus" initiative. The program will distribute affordable meals at 40 baht per plate through the Commerce Ministry's network of approximately 200,000 restaurants, creating alternative menu options and reducing the cost of living burden across the population.

The government will provide financial support to participating restaurants, with budget allocation currently under consideration from either the central budget or a 400 billion baht loan fund. The exact subsidy amount is still being assessed. "The Commerce Ministry is expected to present the "Thai Helping Thai" rice dish project to the Cabinet for approval on Tuesday, July 20," the minister stated. "Once approved, implementation will begin immediately in July. The first phase targets a three-month operational period, after which results will be evaluated to determine continuation."

Regarding price reductions in consumer goods following recent fuel price decreases, Supachee said she has instructed the Department of Trade to closely monitor cost structures of essential consumer products to determine which items should have prices adjusted according to changed input costs, while ensuring fair pricing throughout the supply chain.

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthammaphan announced that the Commerce Ministry is developing details for a cost-of-living relief initiative aimed at reducing expenses on prepared food for the public. The program builds on the existing 'Thailand Helping Thailand Plus' initiative by recruiting restaurants to offer affordable rice and curry dishes priced at 40 baht per plate. Approximately 250,000 restaurants in the Commerce Ministry network and participating in the Thailand Helping Thailand Plus program are eligible to join. Participating restaurants will receive government subsidies for food ingredients, with support amounts under consideration ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 baht per establishment. The program will initially target 100,000 restaurants for a minimum duration of three months, pending Cabinet approval. The Commerce Department will prepare details for Cabinet submission within the third week of this month. Suphajee emphasized the government's intention to alleviate the financial burden on salaried workers through this voluntary program, without forcing restaurants to reduce prices. Participating restaurants must offer quality prepared meals—such as rice with at least two curry or side options—priced not exceeding 40 baht per plate. The Commerce Ministry will place clear signage at participating establishments so the public can easily identify and choose affordable food options. If the program receives positive reception, the government plans to expand the number of affordable restaurants nationwide.

On July 11, 2025, Virojn Laksanaadithorn, a former People's Party list MP, posted on Facebook expressing gratitude to the Bangkok Governor for inviting him to serve on the advisory board. However, he explained that his primary intention is to support the Bangkok City Council's work and strengthen the oversight mechanisms between the executive and legislative branches. "I must respectfully decline the advisor position at this time," Virojn stated. "However, this refusal does not mean I'm unwilling to cooperate. On the contrary, if Bangkok's administration or any agency finds my knowledge and experience useful in solving problems and improving quality of life, I'm happy to offer recommendations, exchange ideas, and follow up on results with full commitment." Virojn added that regardless of which branch one serves, the ultimate goal should remain the same: making Bangkok a better city for all its people.

A blue air-conditioned bus on Route 1-54 (Minburi to Suan Lum) crashed onto a footpath on Ladprao Road at 7:13 a.m. on July 11, 2025, injuring ten passengers near Bangkok Study School. Emergency services from Ladprao Fire Station and Po Tek Tung Foundation rescue workers responded to the three-lane road incident near Soi Ladprao 112 in Wang Thonglang District. At the scene, the bus's front end was heavily damaged with broken windows. The vehicle struck an electrical control box and knocked down several roadside trees, causing traffic to slow in the area. Initial investigation indicates the driver was unable to control the accelerator pedal during operation. A shop located within a school fence adjacent to the crash site sustained structural damage to its metal-frame and metal-sheet roof, affecting approximately 8 square meters. Seven injured passengers were taken to Phetchvet Hospital, while three others were transported to Ladprao Hospital. The group consisted of two male and eight female victims.

Four Ministries Withhold Budget Documents From Committee

Four ministries failed to submit budget documents to Parliament's oversight committee, hampering scrutiny of government spending that directly affects public services from education to disaster relief.

Four Ministries Withhold Budget Documents From Committee
14h ago Khaosod

On July 11, 2569 at Parliament, Rakchanok Srinok, a list-system MP from the Pheu Chart party and chair of the House committee studying and monitoring budget administration, discussed the "Budget Hack 70" initiative. She explained why budget scrutiny matters: it affects citizens from childhood onward, determining welfare allowances, education quality, and responses to floods and droughts. Public administration depends on three elements: people, laws, and budgets.

Rakchanok stated that understanding budgets reveals whether politicians kept campaign promises. Budget proposals, typically valued at twice the final allocation, must be submitted before the official budget. She identified four ministries that failed to submit data: the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, Ministry of Energy, and Ministry of Public Health. The Defense and Foreign Affairs ministries submitted minimal data, while the Labor Ministry and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment initially submitted then withdrew their proposals.

She cited an example from Hat Yai Municipality's budget requesting 8 million baht for jet skis, questioning government sincerity. Rakchanok emphasized that change requires collective action from all citizens, not just politicians. She highlighted recent victories where public pressure forced the government to reconsider policies on dependent care tax deductions and the TH-AI Passport program, demonstrating citizens' power to hold authorities accountable.

Dog Carries Live Grenade Into Thailand Home

A family in Sisaket province narrowly escaped disaster when their dog brought a live Chinese-made hand grenade home, mistaking it for a toy, prompting authorities to safely detonate the fully operational weapon.

Dog Carries Live Grenade Into Thailand Home
14h ago Khaosod

SISAKET — A family in Thailand's northeastern province of Sisaket narrowly avoided disaster after their pet dog unknowingly carried a live Chinese-made hand grenade into the front yard, mistaking it for a toy or bone.

The incident occurred in Non Khun district after the family's dog returned home carrying a rusty object, which relatives initially believed was a piece of plastic or an old bone. The danger was only discovered when the homeowner returned from hospital and noticed the grenade's safety pin still attached.

Realizing it was a suspected explosive device, the homeowner carefully moved it away from the house before notifying the village head, who alerted police and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officers.

Authorities identified the device as a TYPE 82-2 fragmentation hand grenade manufactured in China. Although heavily rusted, bomb disposal officers confirmed the grenade remained fully operational and could have detonated if the safety mechanism had been disturbed or the device had received a significant impact.

The grenade was safely transported to an open field away from the community and destroyed in a controlled explosion. Officials said the blast left a crater about 30 centimetres deep and 60 centimetres wide, demonstrating that the explosive still retained considerable destructive power.

The homeowner said family members had no idea the object was a grenade while the dog had been chewing on it earlier in the day.

"If the dog had pulled the pin or dropped it hard enough, I can't imagine what might have happened," the homeowner said.

District Chief Chaiwat Thammawat described the incident as an important warning for the public, particularly in areas where old military ordnance may still be found. He urged anyone who discovers suspected explosives, ammunition or military objects not to touch or move them, but to immediately notify local authorities or police so trained specialists can safely handle the situation.

No injuries were reported.

Drug trafficking suspect Ekawit, 41, also known as "Peng," owner of the LINE account "rin rin," has been arrested as a key member of a drug smuggling network. He allegedly coordinated the transportation of narcotics into Bangkok and was arrested in Phayao province before being taken to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau for interrogation overnight.

On July 11 at 11:00 AM, Ekakit was transferred to the Criminal Court on Ratchadaphisek Road for detention proceedings. As officers led him past waiting media, he expressed an apology to airline hostess Mina, her boyfriend, and her parents, claiming he did not intend to become involved in the operation. When reporters pressed him on how he could claim lack of intent while participating in drug trafficking, he did not respond further and only repeated his apologies to Mina.

Investigators interrogated Ekakit intensively throughout the night to expand the investigation to other network members. Prosecutors opposed his bail request, citing the serious nature of the charges and concerns he might flee or tamper with evidence.

Opposition Leader Warns Of Fiscal Crisis As Debt Soars

Opposition leader warns Thailand faces bankruptcy due to structural fiscal problems, with debt soaring while capital investment comprises only 13% of the 2570 budget and spending heavily concentrated in Bangkok over rural regions.

Opposition Leader Warns Of Fiscal Crisis As Debt Soars
14h ago Khaosod

On July 11, 2569, at Parliament's committee on budget compilation and oversight, headed by Rakchnok Srinok, a Democrat Party MP, the "Hack Budget 70" event was held with opposition leader Nattapong Ruengpanya delivering the keynote address on structural budget system problems. Using AI technology to audit the 2570 budget, Nattapong revealed that true capital investment comprises only 13% while the government attempts to reclassify expenditures into subsidies to meet the legal minimum of 20% investment spending. He cited the digital wallet distribution program as an example of redefining short-term political campaigns as capital investment when they benefit immediate popularity rather than long-term national development. Nattapong stressed the need for clear definitions of genuine capital expenditure to prevent future governments from manipulating budget classifications. He further noted Thailand's structural problems: high debt with inadequate revenue collection, most budgets consumed by routine spending and central government personnel costs, leaving little for national development. Budget distribution is highly concentrated in Bangkok, which receives 22,493 baht per person compared to only 5,517 baht per person in the Northeast. Nattapong warned that if this disparity persists, the country faces bankruptcy, pointing to a disconnect between economic growth and tax collection that reveals revenue leakage. Regarding committed budgets, he noted some long-term commitments extending to 2609, while the 2570 budget must be analyzed across three spending categories: personnel salaries for civil servants like education, health, and defense ministries; infrastructure investment by transport, agriculture, and interior ministries; and transfers and subsidies by higher education and interior ministries. The Democratic Party plans to propose several reform bills including the Budget Method Act, Budget Reform Act, Procurement Act, and legislation to strengthen Parliament's budget office authority, aiming to transition toward zero-based budgeting.

Singer Chai Warns Society to Learn from Controversy

Singer Chai Tatthasmit urges society to learn from recent entertainment controversies, emphasizing that talent and integrity must go hand-in-hand and warning against opportunism in the industry.

Singer Chai Warns Society to Learn from Controversy
14h ago Khaosod

Singer Chai Tatthasmit has sparked attention with his measured response to recent entertainment industry drama involving Mind Music Records. The label's owner, veterinarian Sathapathorn (known as Dr. Mind), recently signed a former factory worker nicknamed "Puay," known for a viral bedroom video, as a new artist and asked for society's understanding as she starts over. During a film promotion for "Muay Deva: Double Down" at M Studio on Ratchayothin, Chai explained he hasn't posted about the controversy because he's been occupied and only recently discovered it. He stressed he doesn't support opportunism for building fame and trusts that fans and society will ultimately decide.

Chai discussed his artist selection criteria, emphasizing that talent and values must go hand-in-hand. He also touched on updated developments in a car repair fraud case at a well-known auto shop in Pathum Thani, where a vehicle owner was allegedly cheated out of payment and the case is now in court.

Chai stated: "I think the comments are already unanimous. Many people have spoken up. I believe everyone should be more aware and alert about this because it's not normal. It's a completely different matter. There are many reasons and factors involved. Whenever something like this happens, people seize the opportunity. For example, we've been through similar, even heavier situations like Uncle Pol's case before. We should learn from these societal lessons.

I understand some people may seize opportunities or act with good intentions, but ultimately, success can't happen without audience or viewer support." He acknowledged concerns that children might imitate such behavior, noting that young people today record content constantly. "I'm not too serious about it because I don't think I own the entertainment industry. People do what they do. I'm just tired of what's happening and tired for society overall. But I'm somewhat relieved that some people still have common sense—they don't just follow the drama and then go support them anyway. That's two different things entirely." Chai emphasized that ultimately it comes down to fans and the work produced, and that anything unnatural will reveal itself through actual output.
