Egg Supply Sufficient, Officials Debunk Export Shortage Claims

Thailand's Internal Trade Department found adequate egg supplies nationwide and debunked claims that exports caused shortages, launching a discounted egg program selling at 10% below market price through August 31.

Egg Supply Sufficient, Officials Debunk Export Shortage Claims
11 Aug Khaosod

The Department of Internal Trade conducted field inspections of chicken egg supplies in Nakhon Ratchasima and found stocks to be adequate, dispelling claims that exports have caused market shortages. Director-General Withayakorn Maninet said the department is coordinating with relevant agencies to manage supply volumes, pricing, and distribution to ensure sufficient eggs meet public demand and help ease cost-of-living pressures. The department has partnered with provincial commerce offices nationwide to offer discounted eggs under the "Thai Eggs Help Thailand" program, selling at roughly 10% below market price between August 13–31, 2025, to reduce household burdens and improve access to affordable eggs. The department is also coordinating with wholesalers and retailers to run promotions on economically priced eggs and distribute them widely. In Nakhon Ratchasima, provincial commerce officials have been directed to verify facts on the ground, consult with local traders, and source additional eggs from other producers to boost supply and relieve local shortages. After investigation, the department found that reports of egg exports causing domestic shortages are merely unverified rumors, and traders continue to supply consumers daily with adequate quantities available for farm orders. Somchuon Rattanomangklan, director-general of the Department of Livestock Development, said the agency is managing chicken egg production to meet domestic consumption needs by extending layer-hen production cycles to maintain output and increase supply. Officials will monitor production, demand, and distribution closely to balance interests of farmers, businesses, and consumers. The Internal Trade Department will track the egg situation and coordinate with relevant agencies and the private sector to ensure adequate supply while preventing price manipulation or consumer exploitation, and invites the public to report shortages or unfair pricing to provincial commerce offices.

Famous Amulet Dealer Accused of Swapping Gold Buddha

A prominent Thai amulet dealer allegedly swapped a solid gold Buddhist amulet for a fake during authentication in August 2026, later settling with the 60-year-old owner for 9 million baht after she discovered the switch through comparison p

Famous Amulet Dealer Accused of Swapping Gold Buddha
11 Aug Khaosod

A scandal has erupted in Thailand's amulet-trading community after a popular Facebook page exposed allegations of misconduct by a well-known dealer. On August 5, 2026, a 60-year-old woman brought a collection of amulets to the prominent dealer for authentication and valuation, hoping to sell them if the price was right. The dealer selected 14 amulets and offered 2.5 million baht, which she accepted. He then requested to open the frames of some pieces for closer inspection and asked to further verify whether one amulet was solid gold. The owner agreed, and after testing, the dealer informed her the amulet was not gold. However, before consulting this dealer, the woman had previously shown the same amulet to another expert, who had confirmed it as solid gold and recommended she preserve it carefully.

When told the amulet was not gold, the woman cancelled the deal and the dealer returned the pieces. The woman became deeply concerned, fortunately having taken photos of the amulets beforehand. The next day, she brought the disputed amulet back to the first expert, who examined it again and told her: "This is not solid gold, but the amulet in your earlier photo is definitely 100 percent solid gold." The woman now suspected she had not received the same amulet back. When she called the dealer to confront him, he initially denied and refused to acknowledge the issue, but after she mentioned she had photos for comparison, he said he would investigate.

Later, the dealer contacted her, claiming an employee had switched the amulets and offering to take responsibility. He then proposed 9 million baht to settle the matter. This offer raised public questions: if 14 amulets were worth only 2.5 million baht, why would compensation for a single disputed amulet reach 9 million baht? The elderly woman, weary of conflict, accepted the 9 million baht settlement. The amulet at the centre of the dispute is a Luang Pu Tim 8-round coin-shaped amulet in solid gold with lacquer inlay.

AI Boom Lifts Thailand's Digital Industry Confidence

Thailand's digital sector confidence surged in the second quarter of 2025, driven by data center investments, strong export demand from the US and China, and government stimulus, though energy price volatility poses ongoing risks.

AI Boom Lifts Thailand's Digital Industry Confidence
11 Aug Khaosod

Thailand's Digital Economy Promotion Office (DEPA) announced on August 11 that its Digital Industry Sentiment Index for the second quarter of 2025 rose to 48.4, up from 44.5 in the previous quarter. The survey covers five digital sectors: hardware and smart devices, software, digital services, digital content, and telecommunications. All sub-components improved, including profitability, production and order volumes, partnerships, employment, investment, and operating costs.

Acting DEPA Director Suphakorn Sittichai attributed the gains to data center investments, increased demand from major trading partners like the United States and China for electronic components and PCBs, baht depreciation supporting exports, and government economic stimulus that bolstered consumer spending. However, the sector faces headwinds from global oil and energy price volatility affecting shipping costs and rising production expenses for electronic components.

All five industry groups showed improved confidence: hardware and smart devices at 42.9, software at 51.1, digital services at 50.6, digital content at 46.8, and telecommunications at 50.0. Industry operators are calling on the government to extend tax incentives for hiring and skills development, accelerate high-growth sectors like gaming and digital content, expand e-commerce opportunities, and invest in shared infrastructure to reduce product development costs. The survey indicates confidence will likely rise further to 51.6 in the next quarter as government spending accelerates and stimulus measures take hold.

Customs Seizes Over 5.2 Tons of Smuggled Frozen Meat from China

Thai customs seized over 5 tons of undeclared frozen meat from China at Chiang Saen checkpoint in Chiang Rai, with the importer lacking required licenses and facing charges for tariff evasion.

Customs Seizes Over 5.2 Tons of Smuggled Frozen Meat from China
11 Aug Khaosod

Chiang Saen customs checkpoint in Chiang Rai, led by Chawlit Phutphisut, the checkpoint chief, seized 13 shipments of frozen meat totaling approximately 5,200 kilograms and transferred them to the Chiang Rai animal quarantine station. On August 3, customs officers inspecting imports from China discovered undeclared goods including frozen pork, frozen chicken, frozen offal, and other fresh items. The frozen meat weighed about 5,200 kilograms, while other fresh goods weighed approximately 5,614 kilograms, with a combined value of around 507,608 baht. The shipment violates Section 243 on tariff evasion and Section 244 on circumventing import restrictions or prohibitions, as the importer lacked proper licenses. Chawlit said the company, based in Samut Prakan, has been charged. He noted this is the first instance of such concealed frozen meat smuggling in the area, which typically only sees misclassified vegetable declarations. Customs has vowed to strengthen screening procedures.

Thai Actress Raises HPV Awareness, Shares Personal Battle
11 Aug Khaosod

More than 20 years have passed since the world gained access to HPV vaccines, yet the widespread misconception that "no symptoms equals no disease" remains a major obstacle preventing many Thais from seeking protection. The result is stark: one Thai woman dies from cervical cancer every two hours.

Although HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is now a familiar term to many Thais, many still mistakenly believe it affects only women or assume they face no risk if they have no symptoms. In truth, HPV is a common virus that affects all genders and can remain dormant in the body for 15–20 years without causing any signs before leading to multiple types of cancer in the future.

To spread accurate information, Saowapha Station of the Thai Red Cross Society partnered with Bangkok to launch the campaign "HPV Is Not Okay," which included a fitness awareness event titled "Dance for Fitness: Stop Thinking HPV Is Okay" held on August 5 at Lumpini Park's aerobics plaza. The initiative aims to help Thais move from misunderstanding to awareness and prevention. One of the event's highlights was actress Amy Glinnachum's candid sharing of her personal experience confronting HPV.

**Amy Glinnachum's Seven-Year Journey**

Amy revealed that she was diagnosed with HPV infection and stage 2 abnormal cervical cells at just 25 years old—dangerously close to stage 3, which carries a high cervical cancer risk.

"When I went for my checkup, I had no symptoms at all. I was accompanying my sister, and when the doctor called back to say I had stage 2 abnormal cells and HPV, I panicked because I had no knowledge about it at all," Amy recalled.

Over the following seven years, Amy underwent continuous medical monitoring. With each doctor's appointment, anxiety returned. Eventually, she decided to undergo surgery to remove the abnormal tissue based on her doctor's recommendation to prevent the disease from progressing.

Although her treatment ultimately went well and she received an HPV vaccine as advised, the experience made her realize that appearing healthy on the outside may not be enough. Early detection and prevention are key. She chose to speak publicly and urge Thais to "stop feeling ashamed and stay silent," since HPV can affect anyone and should not be a source of embarrassment that causes us to neglect our health.

"I want everyone to not overlook their own health. It's not okay to think HPV is okay. I want everyone to get screened, even if they've only had intercourse once, have only one partner, or are currently single—there is still risk. And I want everyone to receive HPV vaccination," Amy said.

**Moving From "Knowing About" to "Truly Knowing and Preventing"**

Prof. Dr. Sutthipong Vachrasindu, Director of Saowapha Station at the Thai Red Cross Society, stated that while many Thais "know about" HPV, they do not "truly understand" it. Misconceptions remain a major barrier to prevention, particularly the false belief that the absence of symptoms means there is nothing to worry about, when in fact the virus may be hiding in the body for a long time without our knowledge.

Despite the world having HPV vaccines for many years, Thailand continues to see more than 8,600 new cases of cervical cancer annually and over 4,500 deaths per year—a stark reminder that HPV remains a silent threat that should not be ignored.

"The Thai Red Cross Society, through Saowapha Station, is an institution that cares about the health and well-being of the Thai people. The best way we can protect people from disease is through 'prevention' by means of screening and vaccination for diseases where we can provide protection," the professor explained.

Based on this philosophy, the campaign "HPV Is Not Okay" was created to build correct understanding and encourage prevention among all Thais.

Teacher Accused of Kicking Child, Forcing Chili in Mouth

A Chiang Mai parent accused a preschool teacher of kicking their 4-year-old daughter and forcing chili in her mouth, but the school threatened legal action instead of investigating the abuse claims.

Teacher Accused of Kicking Child, Forcing Chili in Mouth
11 Aug Khaosod

A parent in Chiang Mai has publicly accused a teacher of physically abusing their 4-year-old daughter, claiming the teacher kicked the child's back and forced chili peppers into her mouth. The parent initially doubted their daughter's account but became convinced after other children confirmed the incident. When confronting the teacher, the parent was met with denial, and the school subsequently threatened to take legal action against the parent for the public accusations. The parent expressed frustration, questioning whether they have the right to defend their child when the school responds with legal threats rather than addressing the abuse allegations.

Thailand Tourism Plus Program Launches October, Treats All Provinces Equally
11 Aug Khaosod

Tourism Minister Surasak Phancharoenkul revealed that after consulting with the public-private tourism steering committee, the framework for Thailand Tourism Plus has been preliminarily finalized. The program will provide equal travel support across all provinces using a government co-payment model (50-50 or 60-40 cost-sharing), which succeeded in previous iterations. Unlike earlier versions, this round will not distinguish between primary and secondary cities, ensuring equitable implementation and easier administration.

Final details will be completed by August for presentation to the cabinet, with implementation expected to begin in October 2025, slightly later than the original September target for the low season. A National Tourism Policy Committee meeting scheduled for August 14, 2025, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Supachee Suthammapun and the Commerce Minister, will present the proposal. The ministry also received a proposal from the Thai Hotels Association and the Special Area for Sustainable Tourism Administration to integrate community-based tours that funnel tourist spending directly to local communities through tour operators.

Thailand Expands Research Fund Program for Young Capital Market Researchers
11 Aug Khaosod

On August 11, the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (OHEC) signed an amended memorandum of understanding with the Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF) to continue the "Research Fund Support Program for Emerging Capital Market Researchers" into its second year. The initiative aims to develop a robust "National Brain Power Ecosystem" by elevating capacity across four key dimensions: cultivating young researchers to international professional standards, integrating knowledge networks across institutions, creating financial innovations that solve real problems, and strengthening Thailand's position as a regional financial hub.

Permanent Secretary Supachai Patumanakul announced that during fiscal year 2568, the program successfully advanced 10 quality research projects to practical policy implementation. The expanded agreement ensures ten additional emerging researchers will receive sustained and full support. He emphasized that today's signing represents a shared commitment to leverage higher education, science, research, and innovation to drive Thailand's capital market development, support the nation's transition to a high-income knowledge-based economy, and foster sustainable economic growth.

CMDF Manager Chakrachai Bunyawat described the partnership as a crucial step forward amid rapid technological and geopolitical changes. He stressed that Thailand's capital market needs not just funding but expertise to navigate AI, digital economies, and emerging risks. The collaboration translates academic research beyond academic journals into actionable policy, regulations, and financial innovations. Investing in young researchers who understand economics, technology, and modern challenges will strengthen the nation's capabilities and competitiveness.

Jasmine Flower Prices Spike to 1,000 Baht Per Liter Before Mother's Day

Jasmine flower prices have spiked to 1,000 baht per liter ahead of Mother's Day due to lower supply from weather damage, prompting Thai trade officials to warn vendors against price gouging and monitor markets for fair pricing.

Jasmine Flower Prices Spike to 1,000 Baht Per Liter Before Mother's Day
11 Aug Khaosod

The Internal Trade Department inspected flower markets at Pak Khlong Talad 2 to monitor jasmine prices ahead of Mother's Day, reminding vendors to display prices clearly and reasonably. Officials warned that any opportunistic price increases would trigger immediate legal action.

Deputy Director-General Chirawut Suvanajaksorn said officials visited the flower market center at Pak Khlong Talad 2 in Talad Noi district and Yod Piman Market in Phra Nakhon district on August 11 to track jasmine sales. Demand for jasmine flowers and garlands increases during the Mother's Day season, but this year's supply is lower, causing prices to rise according to market mechanisms. The department is closely monitoring price levels, product quantities, and price displays to ensure fair trading and prevent consumer exploitation during periods of high demand.

Surveys found that fresh, large-grade A jasmine flowers in retail shops sell for approximately 1,000 baht per liter, while wholesale prices are around 850 baht per liter. Overall fresh jasmine prices range from 750–1,000 baht per liter depending on size, quality, freshness, and vendor. Fresh jasmine garlands are priced at 200–300 baht for large arrangements, 50–100 baht for medium, and 35–50 baht for small, with prices varying by size, quality, and design.

Chirawut said inquiries revealed that most jasmine sold comes from Nakhon Sawan and Kamphaeng Phet provinces. This year's yield is lower than last year due to heavy rain and cool weather, while Mother's Day demand has increased, causing the price spike—a short-term adjustment based on supply and market demand.

"For consumers buying jasmine or garlands for Mother's Day, please compare prices, quality, size, and quantity before deciding," Chirawut advised. "You don't need to buy from the first shop you find, as prices vary by quality and cost. Comparing options helps you get fair value and meet your budget."

The department has instructed business operators to display prices clearly and transparently so consumers can easily check and compare before purchase. Prices shown must match the sale price, and vendors should charge reasonable rates aligned with costs and market conditions, avoiding excessive markups during high-demand periods.

If the department finds abnormally high prices or receives complaints of price gouging, it will investigate the facts and vendor costs. If found guilty of overpricing without justification, the case may violate the 2542 BE Price of Goods and Services Act, carrying penalties of up to 7 years imprisonment, a fine up to 140,000 baht, or both.

The Internal Trade Department will continue monitoring flower and Mother's Day-related product sales to ensure fair, transparent trading. Consumers who spot unmarked prices, mismatched advertised prices, or unfair practices can report to the department's hotline at 1569 or their provincial commerce office.
