At 4:30 p.m. on August 16, 2025, Sung Men Police Station in Phrae Province received reports of a house fire at Ban Khang Ngam in Don Mul Subdistrict, Sung Men District. Police Lieutenant Colonel Dulyadecho Suwanrinthorn coordinated with firefighters and Don Mul Subdistrict Administrator Wasant Paramalilay to respond to the emergency.

At the scene, firefighters found a two-story teak house burning intensely. They deployed water sprays to combat the blaze for approximately one hour before gaining control of the fire. The entire upper floor was destroyed.

Investigation revealed that the homeowner is a 70-year-old woman living with her 11-year-old granddaughter. Before the fire started, the grandmother had gone to the market to sell vegetables while her granddaughter was resting on the lower floor. The girl heard the sound of breaking glass, got up to investigate, and discovered flames on the upper floor. She immediately ran out of the house to seek help. When the grandmother learned of the fire, she rushed home and hugged her granddaughter with concern for her safety.

Initial assessment suggests the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. Authorities will coordinate with forensic specialists to conduct further investigation and determine the actual cause.

A mechanic at Kit Garage has clarified his side of a dispute over a classic American car repair, saying the customer has already agreed to a settlement. The case began when a half-Thai man appealed to well-known automotive influencer Big V10 for help recovering his classic American car sent for repairs. The owner had already paid 280,000 baht of an estimated 500,000 baht bill, but after more than a year the work remained incomplete and the car's location was unknown. Big V10 visited the garage, leading to a heated argument that ended with both parties shaking hands to resolve the matter. In a statement on the Kit Garage Facebook page, the mechanic said he was not given a chance to explain his side during the confrontation. To satisfy the customer, he agreed to refund 140,000 baht for parts work and has provided chat messages showing the customer's acknowledgment. A handover of the vehicle and the refund is scheduled for Tuesday. The mechanic expressed confusion about why the customer told Big V10 that the car could not be found, when the customer already knew it was at his workshop.

Civil Servant Forced to Buy New Ticket After Airline Oversells Flight

Civil Servant Forced to Buy New Ticket After Airline Oversells Flight
2d ago Khaosod

On August 16, 2569, a civil servant filed a complaint after being denied boarding on a flight from Trang Airport to Don Mueang Airport despite having booked in advance. The passenger had reserved a window seat and ordered food on August 10, arriving at the airport early to check in. After briefly leaving the counter to retrieve a government travel warrant he had forgotten in his car, he was informed the flight would be delayed from 14:55 to 15:30. Upon his return, staff told him the flight was fully booked with 189 passengers checked in and offered an alternative airline ticket plus 1,500 baht compensation and a 150 baht meal voucher.

The passenger rejected the offer because he had an urgent appointment and needed to reach Don Mueang before 18:00. He purchased a new ticket for 3,800 baht on a 17:35 departure, preventing him from fulfilling his original commitment. While airline staff attributed the problem to a system error, another employee revealed the airline routinely overbooks by 2-3 seats per flight to account for no-shows, allowing them to resell those seats. On this flight, all booked passengers checked in, creating the shortage.

The passenger questioned the airline's transparency and accountability, noting his ticket was booked August 10 with a locked seat and meal pre-order. He demanded clarity on how overbooking occurs, how tickets are managed, and how revenue from oversold seats is recorded. He also recorded a video conversation with airline staff in which an employee initially asked not to be filmed but later confirmed the ticket was valid and the seat was locked, admitted the system had problems, and acknowledged the flight was oversold. When asked exactly how many extra seats were sold, the employee could not provide the number and directed the passenger to contact the airline's central office for booking details.

Rare Shellfish Swarm Brings Windfall to Satun Beach

Hundreds of rare angel wing shells washed ashore at Pak Bara beach in Satun, creating a harvesting windfall with daily earnings exceeding 200,000 baht as residents collect the unusually large and shallow-buried shellfish.

Rare Shellfish Swarm Brings Windfall to Satun Beach
2d ago Khaosod

A remarkable natural phenomenon has unfolded at Pak Bara beach in Satun province, where angel wing shells—locally known as "hoy karang" or "hoy phim"—have washed ashore in unprecedented numbers. Hundreds of residents have flocked to the beach to harvest the shells, with some collecting dozens of kilograms each. The shells are unusually large, at 6–7 per kilogram, and normally buried up to 2 feet deep in mud, but this year they appeared much shallower due to exceptional conditions. Daily earnings from beachside sales are estimated at no less than 200,000 baht.

Local resident Bangmud expressed surprise at the phenomenon, noting that such abundance is unprecedented. The shells typically live buried deep in coastal mud and cannot normally be dislodged by ordinary waves. The economic value of the harvest is significant: fresh shells sell for 60 baht per kilogram at the beach and 80 baht per kilogram retail. Traders buy them directly to process into sun-dried versions, which command premium prices up to 1,000 baht per kilogram. Residents typically use fresh shells in stir-fries, curries, and soups, where they offer a distinctive sweet, tender flavor.

Angel wing shells are sensitive indicators of ecosystem health, particularly the health of mangrove forests and coastal balance. Their presence in large numbers signals ecological abundance and a stable natural environment. The shells are found along the Andaman coast in Satun, Trang, Krabi, Phuket, Phang Nga, and Ranong. Their sensitivity to toxins and soil changes makes them valuable markers of environmental conditions in coastal areas.
