Thai Garment Industry Unfazed by U.S. Tariffs, Urged to Expand FTA Markets

Thai garment makers say they can absorb new U.S. tariffs if competitors face similar duties, but should diversify exports to Japan and EU markets where free trade deals offer access to over 450 million consumers.

Thai Garment Industry Unfazed by U.S. Tariffs, Urged to Expand FTA Markets
24 Jul Khaosod

Thailand's garment industry leadership expressed confidence in weathering new U.S. tariffs announced under Section 301, which impose a 12.5% duty on Thai and 37 other countries' exports. Chalumpol Lotarakchapong, chairman of the Thai Garment Manufacturers Association, said the U.S. government's intent to reduce its trade deficit through tariffs is clear and will likely persist. However, he noted that the critical factor for Thai competitiveness is not the absolute tariff rate but how it compares to rival nations; as long as competitors face similar duties, Thai exporters can remain competitive.

With the U.S. accounting for 39% of Thailand's garment exports but 61% of sales going to other global markets, industry officials urged manufacturers to maintain American business while aggressively pursuing opportunities in free trade agreement partners, particularly Japan under the Thailand-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA). Lotarakchapong advised manufacturers to monitor global trade trends without panic and called for joint government-private sector measures to mitigate export impacts and diversify market risk.

Progress on pending free trade deals between Thailand and EFTA and between Thailand and the European Union presents significant opportunity, potentially opening markets of over 450 million consumers and reducing reliance on U.S. buyers. Beyond U.S. tariffs, the industry must also closely track global economic conditions, currency fluctuations, raw material costs, and increasingly stringent sustainability and environmental regulations—all critical factors for long-term competitiveness.

BANGKOK — Thailand and China have agreed to strengthen defense cooperation, with talks focusing on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, defense industry collaboration and efforts to resolve the Thai-Cambodian border issue through peaceful dialogue.

Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Adul Boonthamcharoen met Chinese Defense Minister Adm. Dong Jun on Friday during the latter's official visit to Thailand.

According to the Defense Ministry, the two sides discussed expanding their comprehensive strategic partnership, including responsible AI, cybersecurity, military technology and closer cooperation against transnational crime. They also reaffirmed support for resolving the Thai-Cambodian border issue through bilateral mechanisms and peaceful negotiations.

After the meeting, Adul said Dong had pledged China's support for Thailand while stressing Beijing would remain neutral because both Thailand and Cambodia are "good friends of China." Adul said China is looking to expand military cooperation with Thailand beyond defense equipment to include training, technology and AI, but denied reports that Beijing had offered to mediate the Thai-Cambodian border dispute. "He did not say that," Adul said.

Martial Law Declared in Narathiwat After Ranger Killed
24 Jul Khaosod

Military authorities have invoked martial law powers across Narathiwat province to step up operations against suspected insurgents following the fatal shooting of a ranger earlier this week.

Maj. Gen. Yod Aowut Phuengphak, commander of the Narathiwat Task Force, signed an order on Friday authorizing military personnel to exercise powers under Thailand's Martial Law Act of 1914 to conduct searches and maintain public order.

The order follows the killing of a ranger from Ranger Regiment 45 in an ambush on July 22. Authorities said the suspects remain at large and may pose a threat to public safety.

Under the order, security forces are empowered to set up checkpoints, search vehicles and homes, and immediately arrest and detain individuals suspected of involvement in the insurgency.

The directive also authorizes officers to use weapons immediately against suspects who pose an imminent threat to security personnel, provided the use of force is necessary and proportionate.

The order took effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice.

Temple Leader Files Complaint Over Missing Transformer

A temple leader filed a police misconduct complaint after thieves stole electrical equipment worth 260,000 baht in April; police claimed it was sold and couldn't be recovered, but then a crane company mysteriously returned part of it just d

Temple Leader Files Complaint Over Missing Transformer
24 Jul Khaosod

On July 24, 2025, at the Central Investigation Police Division's complaint center, Prommmasad Kritthayavir, 47, founder of Sri Maha Kali Temple (Thung Dok Krajiao Temple, Thep Sathit District, Chaiyaphum Province), filed a formal complaint with police and gave interviews to media regarding suspected police misconduct in a theft case involving an electrical transformer, meter, and high-voltage power pole. He is requesting an investigation into whether the investigators and the Thep Sathit Police Station commander violated Section 157 of the Criminal Code through negligence or improper conduct.

According to Prommmasad's account, on April 22, 2025, while he was away, approximately 5-6 men with a large crane forcibly removed the transformer, meter, and high-voltage pole from the temple and fled. When questioned, they claimed to be acting under orders to remove and sell the equipment. The incident caused damage estimated at no less than 260,000 baht and posed danger to passing traffic.

Prommmasad alleged that police made no progress on the case, claiming the transformer had already been sold and could not be recovered. For three months, the temple had no electricity. Finally, on July 3, 2025, he paid an additional 380,000 baht to purchase a new transformer set. However, just three days later, on July 6, the investigating officer informed him that the crane company had voluntarily returned the power pole to Thep Sathit Police Station as a gesture of good faith—but without the transformer, the essential component.

"For three months, the temple had no power. Police said they couldn't recover the equipment because it was already sold, so I had to struggle to buy new equipment. But after only three days of having the new transformer, police suddenly said the crane company brought back the pole out of good faith. If they were truly acting in good faith, why didn't they return everything from the start? Why did they let me waste money buying replacements?" Prommmasad stated, adding that he has submitted all evidence to the police for investigation into potential Section 157 violations.

Investigating officer Chakking Tangthim Saphan Mai echoed concerns about the suspicious work practices at Thep Sathit Station, questioning why there was no urgency in pursuing and recovering the seized goods over several months, yet suddenly the crane company voluntarily returned the pole just three days after the victim purchased new equipment. He also questioned the true whereabouts of the transformer allegedly sold and who benefited from the victim's additional losses.

Central Investigation Police Division investigators are currently gathering witness statements and evidence to proceed with legal action.

A 17-year-old grandson has been arrested for fatally stabbing his 67-year-old grandmother in Nakhon Ratchasima after she refused to give him the full amount of money he demanded.

Teenager Arrested for Killing Grandmother in Nakhon Ratchasima
24 Jul Khaosod

Police in Sung Noen district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, have solved a shocking murder case involving an elderly woman. Officers from Sung Noen Police Station gathered evidence and obtained an arrest warrant from the Juvenile and Family Court for the suspect, a 17-year-old grandson identified as Mr. K. (surname withheld), charging him with intentional murder of a senior relative.

On June 28, officers responded to a report of Khai Tumngam, 67, found bleeding heavily near a water basin at Ban Nong Sad village in Sung Noen district. She was rushed to Sung Noen Hospital but died shortly after. An examination revealed she had suffered multiple stab wounds from a sharp-edged weapon, particularly around the neck and chest, indicating a fatal assault.

Lieutenant Colonel Issara Bunnyaritthi, commander of Sung Noen Police Station, ordered a thorough investigation. Evidence collection revealed signs that someone had attempted to conceal the crime. Through continued investigation, officers linked the case to the victim's grandson. The Juvenile and Family Court approved the arrest warrant.

According to police, the motive stemmed from a violent argument when the suspect asked his grandmother for money but did not receive the full amount he requested. Unable to control his emotions, he committed the killing.
