Friend’s Rescue Attempt Fails as Woman Drowns While Fishing
Two women in their sixties went fishing together in a canal in Klaeng, Rayong. One woman drowned after possibly fainting, and her friend’s attempt to rescue her nearly resulted in a second tragedy. The survivor managed to reach shore, call for help, and later authorities recovered the victim’s body.
Two 60‑year‑old friends went to the canal to fish with a net. After eating, Mrs. Por entered the water to cast the net while Mrs. Mali remained on the bank. When Mrs. Mali finished her meal and walked to the water’s edge, she could not see her friend and shouted for her. She then spotted Mrs. Por’s hat floating on the water, covering her friend’s face as Mrs. Por lay face‑up in the canal about 30 meters from shore. Startled, Mrs. Mali discarded her net and jumped in to rescue her friend, trying to support her with her left arm while swimming back. However, Mrs. Por’s heavy weight, the depth of nearly two meters, and Mrs. Mali’s fading strength made it impossible to keep both afloat. Realizing she was about to drown as well, Mrs. Mali steadied herself, swam to shore alone, and called a neighbor for help before alerting the police. Preliminary police assessment suggests that after eating, Mrs. Por may have suffered a sudden bout of dizziness or fainting, causing her to slip into the deep water. Her body will be sent for autopsy before being released to relatives for funeral rites.
